  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon / Epic / Scarlet Camera Beta Build 5.1.23

Trent, the thing is, I set the adaptive quiet record to 30% while recording and 50 as target temperature. Turn on the camera, it gets to 50 and stay there, everything is normal and fans are running fine.
When I hit record, fans stop making noise cause they are down to 30%, everything is normal.
when I stop recording, I still can't hear the fans and the temperature starts to climb and don't stop. 52, 55, 60, 65 and the fans don't kick in. It will get hot to the point the camera will turn itself off.

Please file a support ticket and send in your log file.

I think I'm having a similar issue. It seems my fans have simply stopped kicking in and then I begin getting random sudden shutdowns. Time for me to send in a log file as well. I agree, it is scary, I hope the camera is ok.

And ehm, for us poor documentary filmers in the jungle a way of deleting shots would be much appreciated out in the wild. This mode can always be password protected for big studios so no camera guy deletes shots from Transformer 4 by mistake since they simply wouldn't have the password. :)

Totally agree!
Guys, we can delete stuff off any pro dslr camera. Why do you fear that the movie crowd cannot be trusted with that level of responsibility?

Cheers,
Jochen

I've always assumed not being able to delete clips has to do with fragmentation and SSD wear. When you only allow a full format of the card you can more precisely control where new data gets written.

Hmm... not sure, the fragging is the reason for no delete clip function. As I assume it's very possible to use a computer and card reader and delete one clip folder on a mag and continue to shoot with that mag, or no?

To me that's the workaround, or just get a couple of extra cards and just remove stuff before transfering to backup.

That works. I've had to do it a couple of times. On both occasions I have also experienced, a little later on in the day, that a recording is stopped accompanied with a write error. Those clips have been possible to read and use when transfered to a PC later, but they were not possible to view in-camera.

In short: Not something I would recommend doing.

No, you should never do this. The SSDs should not be manipulated outside of the camera and then reused for recording without first doing an in-camera format.

I have a feeling the reason is that Red wants to keep the file system on the card super simple. Not having to allocate blocks out of order is nice and easy to implement. SSD's internally do their own wear leveling, etc, so that wouldn't be the reason.
I find my problem is the occasional leaving the camera in record mode ( didn't hit the red button hard enough ) and it nicely fills up the Redmag with useless footage. Laptop is in the hotel room. I'm stuck.

Fantastic that we got the manual fan modes back!

Dude, I'm with ya on this one Andreas! I would LOVE for Jarred, Trent, Graeme, Biederman and company to allow us to delete clips in camera! Sometimes, when you're low on media, it would be great to have that feature. Like when shooting over-cranked and the talent messes up the shot? Just delete it instead of being forced for that huge amount of data to be sacrificed!

One more vote on that one ! The sound guy can do it on his recorder, we should be able to erase a clip too. Make it a hidden option or something if you think it's too risky, but that could sometimes be a life saver. Plus, I often get strange looks from the director or producer when I say I can't erase the last clip.

I've watched a few dvd extras where i'm sure they used that for the BTS.

Did that once. Disaster

To fix that you would need more than a delete clip option, it sounds like you have usable footage at the beginning of such a clip. So you need trimming in camera, that gets complicated. ;)

A "delete last clip" function would be enough for me and probably doable without messing up the filesystem too much.

Erasing clips in camera is a feature I've been wanting ever since I became a Red user, I still don't understand why Red doesn't implement this. It will make everyone's life a whole lot easier.

Gotta say, I'm one for not having delete in camera. I think the risk for productions is too high and there are easy work arounds...
I think the user should be able to choose if he wants to take that risk or not. The ability to use such a feature should be activated in a maintenance menu or something, so you only activate it if you know what you're doing, and know the risks.

But here is what I don't get : people get all worked up about how dangerous an in camera "erase last clip" feature would be, but I haven't heard anyone asking to remove the terrible in camera "format card" feature, which is waaaayyyy more dangerous ! ;)

It's a professional camera, it's supposed to be used by people who know what they're doing. If they erase a clip that they shouldn't have, it's their fault, not the camera's. Same as if they format a card which hasn't been transferred yet.

On big productions you probably don't need this feature (and are free not to use it, even deactivate it to be sure), but I've seen a lot of situations where I would have loved to be able to erase a clip. Red button got pressed (while moving the cam for example) and camera rolled for a few minutes before someone noticed it. Recorded a test with someone else to see how the scene works, played it back to check it and don't need the take anymore. Slowmo stuff that went clearly wrong and needs to be redone. Doco stuff, waiting for something that didn't happen, but recording just in case... (yeah, I know, pre-rec is nice for that)
And no, there are no easy workarounds I know of.

Anyway, Red, please consider adding this in a future firmware :)
