  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DPX conform from Avid EDL . software now available

Since the tape field in the metadata is already the first 4 characters of the file name, the application doesn't really offer any more than putting files into directories. At least from my quick read of what it does. It would seem to me that DI conform stations would easily add that to their own application as part of an indexing process.

tape naming is a problem for many DI apps. Certainly apple color.

The name A001_C021 becomes A001_C02 in a (industry standard) CMX3600 edl. therefore you could end up with a seriously confused import.

Clips are not relevant in conform unless you are using edgecode instead of time of day timecode which you shouldn't be.
So what's important is good house keeping.

This is what monkey extract does.

It tidies up the EDL into a true CMX3600 compatible format which all current DI tools will read and extract the DPX or TIF frames and assemble them in industry standard format of root folder, REEL, FRAMES ( with time of day T.C)

It is rock solid.

You can start it on a job ( takes 5 minutes ) and come back in a few hours or overnight and find your online files waiting for you.

What else does that?

I stand corrected. I did give it a more careful read. Avid EDL manager does output the full 16 characters in a non standard CMX EDL format for systems that have tweaked their software to allow that. Advantage there is a much more unique source ID than just the first 4 characters.

Avid EDL Manager tracking of both time of day or edgecode so it us up to the user to decide which one to use for conform. EDL Manager also allows truncating if "tape" source to any number of characters.

That being said, the interesting piece of the workflow is the indexing and extraction of the R3D files. I just tried a 3 event EDL and nothing happened, so either I am doing something wrong, or a there is something wrong in the process.

Got it to work.... it was me.

It's been a long day.

Nothing as in absolutely nothing?

what is your system? leopard? do you have redalert/redline installed? We have tested this app quite heavily so it works on all our systems here.

Can you give me any more details?

I have it working now. It was user error... It is working now.

Thanks

Just cutious. Why Shoudl't I use Edgecode?
I've been using edgecode to conform with no problem.

Usually T.C. is jam sync'd from camera with sound dept on the shoot day for easy matching in edit and sound tracklaying, dubbing etc. Edgecode makes this a lot more difficult.

Time of day timecode is a simpler and more effective method for all departments picture and sound. Others may disagree.

I shot a feature in Australia last year that the Rubber Monkey guys provided the camera equipment and tech support for (shooting on a viper). They provided a fantastic level of service, on short notice, and are great guys. I wish you all the best with this software product, and thanks for once again providing a solution where it's needed.

As for reel names...

Here's how I handled it in my system... If the Reel name in EDL wasn't full Clip name then I worked backward...

- If I had A001_C001 then I looked at all A001_C001 clips (possibly more than one in cases where duplicate reels have been created) and looked for clips that contained the right timecode - generate warning in situation where more than one match is found.

- If I had A001_C00 then I'd look at all A001_C00[1-9] clips to find matching timecode - generate a warning if more than one match exists.

- If I had only A001 then I'd look at all A001 clips and check the timecode match in here. Again warn if more than one match was found.

Generating Avid EDLs I was also able to export clipname (and other metadata) in the comments, so when parsing the EDL I also looked at the event's comments field and parsed out anything that matched the RED naming convention to allow for more clip ID detail even if it couldn't be included in EDL Reel name.

That was mostly fool proof except in the cases of offspeed footage, where the TOD actually runs faster than realtime (shooting at 100fps on 25fps base burns through 4 seconds of timecode every one second of realtime). In situations where the full clip name isn't available this was prone to pulling the wrong clip as the correct timecode could appear in more than one clip.

I am getting the following error " Please Ensure R3D Source Directory is Connected".

I tried by exporting EDL from FCP and Set the Output path and R3D Source Directory.

I am doing anything wrong?

fcp online

fcp online

question: how do I get fcp to match the render files, so I can online in fcp. When I import the edl in fcp, I get offline files, but these are .mov. So I can not reconect them to the rendered tiffs - what am I missing?

If it can cope with disolves, subclips, spanned r3d media and speed ramps, all the things that Crimson has given me a headache over then this might be a good little piece of software. Will have to try it out.

While sync sound in Avid the editor assistant added the scene- shot/take structure to the names of the clips so now I have, for example, "44 -2/1 A015 C009 120708" as a master clip name. How can I create an EDL without this extra digits to match the monkey workflow?

Thanks.
Ido.
