  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Does Weapon render Redvolts obsolete (vs Redvolt XL)?

As the subject implies ... is the Weapon geared towards XL or do standard Redvolts still have a place in the ecosystem?

The Weapon Redvolt XL module seems exactly as described - XL battery only compatibility. Thin on clarification on the ET side handle - seeing a lot of love for the idea of an included battery for lightweight and hotswap purposes but nothing solid on whether this will be like the existing side handle w/Redvolt or not.

We largely live on v-lock but wondering if it's time to let go of our legacy Redvolt gear and start thinking XL as our LW v-lock alternative. As always, appreciate all official and unofficial perspectives :)
 
As of right now, there appears to be no accessories that support redvolts except the Redvolt Expander module. Unless ET's side handle includes a Redvolt bay, they may not have a huge place in the new ecosystem. I'm remaining optimistic about the side handle though...
 
I seem to recall there are some 3rd party v-mount accessories in the works with RED's blessing (or maybe they are ET, owned by RED).

You can use a "SINGLE" regular Redvolt battery on the new REDVOLT XL Module.

Mark, are you saying you are out even if the new side handle has battery power other than redvolts?

Are these little birds fluttering around the ET sidehandle project or something different?
 
It's not a deal breaker for me, but I do see the REDVOLT option in the current Side Handle as being one of the more unique things about the DSMC style bodies and I've certainly used it.

I'm grabbing a few REDVOLT XLs because of the longer run times you get. Weapon is lighter weight and that combo should allow for some nice compact possibilities. And yep a REDVOLT in a Side Handle would allow for a more compact rig, but at a 1/3rd the run time of the XL.

Either way I'm getting the Weapon Element Technica Side Handle. For the way I shoot most of the time I just "need" it to be fast for checking exposure and focus with the occasional bonus of adjusting the Motion Mount ND settings. Also, it just helps me get a grip on the camera.

So weird that I'm saying this as I've been using mostly the LCD Touch while on location for the current gig when it's not in the gyro-stabilizer.

But what if they come up with something much better that doesn't include the REDvolt? Would you choose staying current over better tech?

As to sensor-tech: (a conditional:) Nope

As to battery - tech: Hell yeah!
If I don't have to get everything else new, that's just great and makes it more likely that I will upgrade.

I am not in this for the joy of new tech in and for itself. (Even though I enjoy new tech and work in developing new tech)

I understand from a practical standpoint. I just think that camera and camera power should advance together.

(But then, I don't have a stash of 65% Redvolts to deal with. '-)

I do a lot of differnt things. One of those I enjoy most is to throw my Dragon in the handluggage and span the world on a minirig.
I also do other stuff, but that has really become an integrated part of me, and also of work.

Redvolts, even at 65% help that happen.

Did some months of V-mounts this summer, and frankly it was comfy and left my wrist strained...
 
I rarely used an actual battery in the side handle. Mostly because of the limited run times they provided. For me, the side handle is the primary way I carry the camera. I also have the buttons programmed for edge, exposure and 1:1 mode. In the early days of EPIC, I would also sometimes use the nav pad/enter to press a button on screen when the touch screen was being difficult. :) Actually, it worked well when shooting 3D as I had one side handle and it controlled both cameras settings in a side-by-side scenario.

I do wish we could see some new and improved redvolt xls. Maybe smaller, depth wise to reduce the weight, but with more storage capacity.

Just to be clear, I LOVED the Epic Side handle and think the REDvvolt was well suited to it. But that is old tech and I believe the folks at ET can design a better moustrap for us to stick a battery in... meaning a better battery as well.

Unlike Toia, if the new side handle uses a REDvolt, that is probably a deal breaker for me.
 
I guess there are three levels of this:

No battery, redvolt, "new tech".

If there isn't a significant change in capacity, I'd go for redvolts.
If there is to be change, I'd love the same formfactor but better capacity.

But I guess I hang in there with Toia.

Same here Stacey. And when I did have a REDvolt loaded, I knew it by the extra heft of the camera. Weapon weight is shaping up as aiming for being less than a barbell camera... we need new on board power that stays in that mode... or for my two cents, a side handle sans (battery) power altogether.
