  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Does Adobe CS5 work with full rez R3D files ?

Also is CS5 "rocket aware" ?
The idea would be to finish the entire piece in 4K R3D, (all green screen).
Is this possible? Sorry for such a basic question... I know nothing of after effects.

It does, but the playback performance depends on your sytem and RAID configuration

At the beginning of the tutorial it says a minimum of 40 MB per second for Raid speed... Could I get this speed with a 3 SSD's raided together?

4K playback on a 4K display? No!
4K source editing, reduced resolution playback in a window, checking focus on stills in full rez, rendering 4K? Yes!

The more cores and speed, the better. RAID doesn't matter much, a single R3D is playing well from a single SATA drive.

real time 4k playback for green screen is possible with an nvidia quadro fx 4800 using Premie's built in ultra keyer. You have to learn how to use it. It has all the bells and whistles and will work very well with RED footage, its not a 32bit keyer though. So do some tests b4. You can pull flawless keys with keylight in AE, or with Primatte keyer pro

Actually you get 4.5k full realtime playback and editing using the red rocket card.

I've installed the Red Cs4 installer plugin.
The red options aren't showing up in the sequence settings?

Sorry We are talking about CS5. With CS5 you don't need any installer just soft import and start editing. Everything is built in.

You should Go to Adobe.com and search for CS5 and Red R3D files

Hi Michael,

Your question could be taken two ways. Premiere CS5 will be able to work with 4k red files no problem. Even if you just watch them back at a reduced resolution (say if your computer is not fast enough), you are still working with the 4k originals and can export out at 4k at the end.

You mentioned After Effects which threw me off. After Affects won't offer you real time playback as it's not really designed for playback at all. It's a composting program, not an editing program like Premiere (or Final Cut Pro or Avid etc).

Red Rocket support has been added though there is no ability to do Rocket SDI. This is because of the extra time associated with having the footage pass from the Rocket to the GPU and back to the Rocket again.

Brad,
Thanks for the info.

Regarding Premiere CS5 with Red Rocket... unfortunately I'm only seeing consistent full frame rate playback (23.98FPS) at 1/8th resolution... and this is WITH the red rocket enabled. I had originally thought I was getting full res playback... but it was only intermittent.
There's got to be something wrong here... I get full frame rate playback in RedCine-X with the Rocket... so why not Adobe Premiere CS5.

I should note that I do NOT have an Nvidia card (which enables the Mercury Playback engine). Instead I've got an ATI Radeon 4870... but this shouldn't matter as the Rocket should be doing the lifting.

Maybe it could be drive speed ? I'm playing off of a 2TB firewire 800 G-Drive.
Would it make a difference if I installed an eSata card and played from a G-Drive ? It certainly doesn't make a difference in redCine-X....

MacPro eight core 2.26 Intel Xeon / Snow Leopard 10.6.5
16GB RAM
ATI 4870
Red Rocket
Kona 3 Card
Premiere CS5

Make sure RED Cine isn't running when you run ppro. Only one app can use the rocket at a time.

Cheers

Nothing else is running. Only Adobe Premiere CS5. Even after a restart and then checking to make sure all "rocket enabled" preferences are correct.... I still don't get full resolution and full frame rate play back.

It's not the rocket card because RedCineX plays back the footage just fine?
strange...

I guess your CPU or amount of RAM (or both) is the problem here.

24 gigs of RAM make a big difference, also the latest CPU. If the Rocket is waiting for the CPU to do some number crunching you have a problem. Also I recommend you to get a Cuda card - night and day.

What kind of 4k display do you have?

best, Frank

What Cuda card would you suggest? Would the Nvidia 285 work?

The 285 works very well, even a tad faster than Quadro 4800. I haven't tested any newer cards until now.

What is your cpu usage when running PPro with rocket on. If everything is setup correct you should see like 10% cpu usage otherwise you will peg every cpu.

Dave.

Which application should I use to monitor CPU usage ?
thanks,
Michael
PS- would dynamic linking from AP to AE affect things?

There's an Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.
