  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Does Adobe CS5 work with full rez R3D files ?

Like UlI said, use activity monitor. If you launch AE first it will get the rocket and ppro won't.

I'm going to check CPU usage later this afternoon.

Question though... it seems that what ever application is opened first uses the Rocket. If you go into another application the Rocket is still being used by the first application... is this correct? If so then wouldn't dynamic linking within AP/AE create a problem with this?... because when using dynamic linking you're essentially bouncing back and forth between the two applications.

Also, someone mentioned earlier that I might want to install additional RAM (I've currently got 16GB). It sounded like AE maybe wasn't optimized for that particular amount (16GB)...
I read something similar on the Davinci Resolve system requirements PDF which states:

"RAM: 6, 12 or 24 GB for memory
optimization (not 8, 16 or 32 GB)"

Could the same be true for CS5 ? Perhaps 12GB or 24GB would be better than 16GB ?

Here are my CPU and playback results.

Adobe After Effects CS5:

- using anywhere from 26%-100% of the CPU
- when rendering it ranges from 365%-450% of CPU usage

Adobe Premiere CS5:

Playback at 1/4 resolution = 44% CPU usage with smooth playback
Playback at 1/2 resolution = 54%-55% CPU usage with mostly smooth playback
Playback at full resolution = 155% and is really choppy

Also, last night we installed a new graphics card: the Nvidia GTX 285 and noticed some improvement in playback... also both AP and AE seemed general more responsive and a bit faster (but still no what I understand other users are experiencing).

So something is a miss... If you just playback a single R3d clip in the sequence window at full res and rocket is working then you shouldn't have anywhere close to that cpu usage. Are your rocket drivers up to date? I am off tomorrow but back next week and we can track this down.

16 GB or those famous groups of three don't make that much of a difference, as long as RAM is in identical pairs. 16 GB shouldn't perform too bad.

I'm afraid there's some other bottleneck in your setup. Where are your cards located? Are you using a video I/O card too?

Uli and David .

Thank you so much for you help. Here's a picture of the back of my system:

From Top Down:
4. esata
3. AJA Kona 3 Card (not being used and uninstalled driver/software)
2. Red Rocket (minus SDI ports... we disconnected them from the main rocket so we could install the graphics card below it).
1. (taking up two slots) NVidia GTX 285

Your card's placement looks alright.

Dynamic Link will greatly reduce your performance. Every frame you play in Premiere, will first be rendered by AE. Take a single R3D, drop it in your PPro timeline and trying playing that.

thank you will give it another test, but we were seeing pretty choppy playback even before we starting using dynamic linking. Once we're finished in Premiere is it possible to eliminate Premiere from the equation and essentially open up the entire sequence/project in AE.
This workflow was suggested to me as an easier way to export/rendering the entire project.

Thanks Uli. Could the choppy playback be connected to drive speed? (it certainly doesn't seem to matter that much in RedCineX)... I normally play off a G-raid FW800.

Currently we're using a G-Raid via esata.

Here is a test you need to do. Add a single red clip to a matching sequence in PPro. Make sure you have a clean system start and no other apps running. Open activity monitor. You should see 1-x number of processes called ImporterREDServer. Start playback in ppro so you can still see activity monitor. See if the ImporterREDServers are doing any work. They shouldn't be. If they are the rocket is not being used.

Cheers
