  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Do we have to thank RED for the birth of...

BRAW, prores raw, CanonLite, etc were an inevitability/necessity... Basically a form of raw that can playback in realtime at 4k+ and whose datarate isn't prohibiting resolution (re: compressed raw, 4k+). cDNG, ArriRAW, etc all have data rates that are prohibiting resolution/framerate/capture time.

It's cool that RED is finally working towards getting decompression to the GPU, but it's still in beta, only works with ~6gb nVidia cards... in windows only... and it took 11years... but it might be a little late to the party. BRAW has that right now, cross platform, and out of the gate, with *way* less hardware requirements (granted 4.6k instead of 8k, but still, the minimum hardware requirements for 4k, 5k, 6k are the same as 8k with r3d).

A very, very modest system can playback REDCODE RAW 5K full debayer without much hassle for a long while now. Like I think 2 or 3 year old laptops at this point. The big focus with the new GPU decode is 8K playback, which is still "the top" at the moment in the industry in terms of requirements. But yep, you can still work with it on a laptop if needed.

The new Nvidia tech in collaboration with RED started about 10 months ago. In the meanwhile, post hardware has been advancing rapidly where things like RED Rockets are not exactly the focus and/or needed.

Complete side note, in my years of working with RED footage I have never owned a Rocket. So there's that general POV. I'm also not pushing dailies out typically at whirlwind speeds. But the real truth is I preferred the software debayer over the Rocket for reasons.

My suspicion is we have Go Pro to thank for BRAW - pretty sure by it's description is based on the CineformRAW and Go Pro made Cineform open source.

Could be wrong but if you look at how it's described and you dig up CineformRAW's description, and you consider the timing - it'd make sense no?

BRAW has nothing to do with cineform and it's a different technology. BRAW is not a wavelet compression.
