  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Do i need the DSMC Handle that much?

With the recent 3.2.x firmware allowing amazing customization of the buttons I can get the side handle to work just the way I want it to. But I'm seriously considering getting a touch screen to speed up the entry of values when the "keyboard" or "numeric pad" is presented on screen.
 
I have the touch and that's it and it's nice. But I can't help but feel that I'd prefer the SH with a 5.6" screen. Or get a SmallHD screen that will work with my 7D, too.
 
Does everybody still feel the same way about the DSMC Side Handle to date?
With all the talk about it being somewhat flimsy, is there an update from RED soon?
Im speculating of course.

Well, after getting mine i cannot use the camera without it... Its pretty much impossible to old and use if you dont. Oh, and it doesnt feel flimsy at all...

Thanks to all who talked me into it, idk what i was thinking when i asked... Haha

Side handle flimsy? Umm.. NO! Definitely not. The Side Handle never leaves my camera. It's tough, durable, well designed, numerous user defined buttons, ergonomic. I quite often pick my 15-20lbs camera setup up by just the side handle.

It's the number one source for menu navigation. The REDMOTE doesn't even come close. Flimsy... NO. Put that one to rest.

Wrong choice of words. After reading a few posts, I had it in my head as flimsy.
I meant to say that there are warnings thats its not robust.
I just need to know since its a 950 USD purchase that can go to an 128SSD.

The 5" Touch LCD is average, the OLED EVF is average, quad module, redvolts, REDs battery mounting system, subpar...

The Side Handle is excellent. BUY IT, you won't regret it. You won't take it off.

I have no idea about the OLED since we have the LCD version and all our batteries are AB.
Again, I read some posts here and some had concerns.
Im just asking.
I was sold on it from Timothy's post.

I think that was the first build of the side handle. Whne our epic M went in for update it came back with a new all differnent kind of make for the side handle... Different materials and different battery lock etc.

How do you know which revision of the side handle you have? I know a month or so ago I received the new battery lock for my side handle.
 
One more question about the DSMC Side Handle.
If one had a choice, would you get the Side Handle first or the 5" Display.
If say the gap between orders are a month.
 
Update on my self.
I went with the LCD.
After looking at the one we have at work...well actually drooling over it since its attached to this beautiful RED MX, I decided man up.
However, I am still debating on purchasing for the next round.
The only reason I ask is that, I have read many posts on this item and at close to $1K I feel I need assurance that I'm buying a decent product.

Just facts please, I have a weak stomach from just visiting my credit card web-site :P
 
It makes it more of a "camera" i.e adding another point of contact, one that is super conventional and ingrained into any photographer's muscle memory, the right-hand-gripping-the-side kinda thing.
