  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DJI Wireless Follow Focus - 1st Impression

Sorry if this was asked here before: Is there an alternative / cheaper product to the dji motor right angle cable?

Hello Everyone.

I've come across this on the dji store:

http://store.dji.com/product/ronin-mx-remote-start-stop

http://store.dji.com/product/ronin-mx-remote-start-stop-dji-foucs-power-and-data-cable

http://store.dji.com/product/ronin-mx-rss-control-cable-for-red (not sure wich red cameras these work with)

http://store.dji.com/product/ronin-mx-rss-control-cable-for-canon

It should work / it will eventually work with the dji focus, answering our hopes and prayers.

The best i can figure it should be powered by the motor, and then connect to camera via a rs cable.

There are cables for almost any camera you can imagine .... BUT the Arri, which is pretty much 99% of the cameras out there.

Does anyone know anything about this? Is it already working with the dji focus (it was designed for the ronin)? Should we expect an Arri cable anytime soon??

Thanks in advance

Today I can confirm, There is no reverse polarity protection in these motors. So be careful when you plug in that Dtap... As today I noticed that it was possible to put the Dtap im the front outlet on the tilt arm of the ronin.... in reverse. The result is the motor simply burn up in seconds. My guess is Im not the only or te first one that has done something that stupid. I bet most of the burned DJI motors died in similar ways.

Ordered a new one today and will try send the old one to be repaired. Personally I can only think that putting a diod on the minus cable inside the motors costs pennys and take very little space, Possibly something DJI can add to the next gen motors.

Hi Björn... I experienced the lack of protection against reversed polarity myself!
I inadvertently connected the DJI motor to a D-Tap-Cannon xlr4 cable I had left from some stolen gear, I think a rain deflector which strangely used reverse polarity... smell and smoke.

Received a new one yesterday... still trying to connect it to the transmitter, always "failed!" I guess they have different firmwares installed, but I´m unable to get the list of available firmware with the DJI Assistant...
(EDIT) I was able to upgrade transmitter and motor and looks to work OK. The User Manual didn´t state that the device had to be connected to the computer to see the list of upgrades available...

Did you have yours repaired? May you tell me the cost?
Thanks,
Guido

Burned my motor a few weeks back and have not had time to deal with it until about a week ago.

The failure: Basically a client of mine pushed the Dtap into the power output of our ronin with the polarity mixed up. So + to minus and - to plus... It was simple to see that these DJI motors do not have any diods in them as it came out thick smoke from the motor as soon as the Ronin was powered up. So be carefull when you connect your Dtap´s preferably if you rent this system out I would swap the Dtaps to polarity protected Dtaps and you would not have to worry.

My guess, the above is possibly the cause of 99% of the failing DJI motors.

Now I sent the motor to DJI, a bit fiddly to get trough with their support but when I figured it out it was as easy as filling in a form and getting an email with a document to print and take it to the nearest kiosk/UPS center. And now 3 days later I was informed that my new motor is on it´s way.

So to me the suport works better than it should, they would not really need to replace my motor as it was clearly a user error but they did any way which I can only be thankfull for.

The safe tap is a great product and I use it in most of my Ptap cables. I did mount it to my DJI focus motor cable and it's not that great for that.
I explain: Because of the nature of how a motor works, pulling variable voltage/amperage as it goes depending on torque and speed necessary to perform its work, it seems to confuse the Safe Tap making it blink in different colors as the motor works. It still works fine, but I have a feeling that the Safe Tap is not designed for this. Just a word of caution...

Been running my motor lately off a consistent 12v output instead of directly from my blueshape batteries d-tap, and so far all is good.

If the motor continues to work this time, then I will be purchasing a second backup, and continue to use this setup

Don´t you think that the gear teeth of the motor are to short? It feels to me that they don´t really have good grip.
Can you replace the motor gear wheel?

Just was on a shoot where the motor stopped working, the motor was really hot, but they were not stiff lenses, worked fine for most of the day

The only reason I was using it was because my rt motion motor cable port got damaged the day before

Does anyone know if the DJI Focus can remap throw, for a longer throw. DSLR lenses often have such short throw... I know Fool Control and the Optitron can do this. Thanks.

So got a new motor from DJI as I happened to fry my old one by plugging in the Dtap with wrong polarity. Question anyone here knows how to pair it with my hand controller?

To me the new motor seams to be dead, or it does not blink and does not show up in the DJI focus assistant. Is that how it should be? can't seem to find how to link the two in the manual.

To link the motor and the hand unit, you need to find the link menu in the handset. The motor has a tiny hole in the bottom where you insert a little share pointy object (kinda like taking the sim card out if the iPhone).
As you press the orifice in the motor, you activate finding the motor on the handset through the menu.
Good luck!

Probably the motor has the new firmware and the transmitter has the previous one (happened to me); you have to install the new firmware in the transmitter, downloading it from DJI page while it is connected to the computer...

Hello everyone.

A few months back I got my replacement motor from DJI (the second that just stopped working). It is my backup kit, so it just layed on the box until now.

I could not connect to the controller, as firmwares were off. I updated everything, and it sort of works, but calibration now takes forever.

Has anyone come accross this issue before? Any workaround? Or calibration with the new firmware is just crap now? I have an older unit that I m afraid to upgrade now...

Any input is appreciated. Thanks in advance

PS: if anyone has an inside connection with DJi, please...

My first motor fried. Was replaced with one that was dead on arival... Waiting for my third motor now.
The first one worked fine until I gave it swapped polarity power and that I can not really blame the motor for. But sending out dead replacements does not feel to conforting.
