  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DJI Ronin

You are right.
Regarding previous projects where I worked, they wanted naked gimbal because they had all the other gear in house, or they wanted fully equipped with camera and all the accessories.
Comparing the price of Ronin with Movi I think there will be a significant price drop for gear rental, but operator price should stay the same.

BTW: is there a chance to use Movi controller with Ronin?

I don't see any reason why properly setup Ronin will command less rental fee then Movi. This is not about how much something cost - but what it can do.
I am personally not offering dry hire - only a turn-key service with 2 or 3 man crew...
You can use any Futaba-based 2.4GHz compatible controllers with the Ronin - I am not sure what the Movi one is based on...

I myself am offering my Ronin with or without accessories. But the price of it alone is double of the rate of it going out with accessories. With all the accessories it's almost the rate of a Steadicam rig, and for what it does, I believe that's fair.

I believe the Movi controller is based around Spektrum.

I think the Ronin might also have a PPM port for taking a spektrum radio or other PPM source, so this is not entirely out of the range of possibility.

might have some time to investigate this soon.

Just received the Ronin and I thought should answer a couple of questions I was curious about myself
  1. The Ronin is extremely well built, but as others have stated, its also heavy. Especially after mounting the Scarlet on it.
  2. Could not get it to fit the F5 with the battery on the back, but it is possible if you power the F5 with a belt pack. Even with this setup your movements will be very restricted.
  3. It was nice of DJI to include the case. In my opinion ALL camera and gear equipment should come in cases. I was really upset when Sony sent the F5 in a cardboard box. That is not on.
  4. did not have enough time to finish the balancing and set up, but DJI is not exaggerating, it is almost all tool's free adjustment.
  5. App is easy to use and almost all hassle free.
For the price it's a steal.

Batteries and Long Arms

Batteries and Long Arms

Willis.

When will extra batteries and long arm be available? My Ronin came in yesterday.

guys, a quick thing i am noticing. when the ronin is in second operator mode, i can only pan 90 degrees left and right, so nothing more than 180 degrees in total. i think i should be able to pan full 360 degrees in this mode. any ideas?

Gentlemen,

I finally had a moment to take my Ronin out of its rather hefty box and assemble it. Almost immediately I ran into a weird issue: Auto Tune Stability doesn't seem to work.

Makes no difference if I'm running the app on an iPad via Bluetooth, or on a PC via USB, the same thing happens when I run Auto Tune: the gimbal makes 4-5 very short twitches, after which it locks all gimbal movement; I can hear the motors whine slightly, and the gimbal acts like its one solid block of metal. I've tried this a few times, waiting longer each time for the gimbal to come out of it. The longest I waited was about a minute, after which I switched the gimbal off.

Have you run Auto Tune? If yes, how did it perform for you?

My guess is that many people will get a Ronin if the general verdict is positive, and it will be hard to rent it out. I'd estimate it would go out for for around 100-150 a day.

As others have said, the real cost with a profession setup is the constellation of accessories you need to do a professional job.

The first generation wireless HD feeds are starting to become tiresome with drop outs happening past a certain point (gimbals like to run free!) or not being able to do car-to-car monitoring, for example (or various obstructions). Professional remote video (like BOXX standard) starts at around 6K with Paralinx Tomahawk.

Decen't follow focus starts at around 6K (add Ks for multiple channel and light motors).

Decent battery for light-weight setup starts at around 1.3-2.5K (if you're not recharging on an 8 hour day).

In the long game it's clear that every production, DOP, camera operator, hobbyist, will have a gimbal, and rates will mirror that of equipment of a similar expense, so in the case of the Ronin, the BMD cameras.

That rate is way too low. In my business model, if you rent it out with a Digital Bartech and an Arrow X or Plus, the gimbal goes for $200 (plus the cost of the accessories).
If it rents out by itself, no accessories, it's$400.

Well, that's 50 dollars more than my estimate. I was thinking in terms of the complete package. $400 is close to 1/6 of the cost of the item. Anyone renting it for multiple days would just grab one off the shelf for themselves (and would be well advised to, as contrary to popular belief, using a gimbal *well* isn't quite that plug and play).

That's the whole thing though. It's like mobile phones. Once you're using one you can't imagine life without it. Everyone will have one, but not everyone will have the whole package (because it's still relatively expensive).

Got my Ronin two days ago and it is working fine in all modes. Don´t forget to upgrade the firmware version to 2.1 which is available on the website.

Very nice Luigi! The wildlife in Europe has evolved a lot since I have left... ;o)
Love the passing shot from the balcony!

I think I really agree with you is that these gimbals free our mind and we can now imagine shots that we would never consider before...

Keep it up!
