dji Ronin (XL) Multi Test-Shoot/Review!

Hi Ketch!

I've used a lot of gimbals but the RONIN seems like a much better solution than all the others...
I currently own an FS700 and the only thing I'm concerned about is when/if they will be making the XL arms?

Great thread and I'm looking forward to the review!

Andreas as Rome is Correct, the XL Kit, is still in development for final touches and hopefully soon to be ready and ship out to awaiting customers, I had suggested that the Kit were not only to be longer Arms but also third longer center arm as to allow better quicker balancing of the center of gravity of the actual Ronin thru the center arm & Axis, so DJI has been great and listing to the early Beta testers and I am hopeful that such design will be implemented and finished soon so that I can receive that Kit and put it to final test and get it out there.

But the Red Epic is perfectly balanced in a variety of art ups on current Ronin as easy as it can be, and way easier then on the Movi or on few other currently available Gimbals, so not to worry at all.

Andreas,

I asked Ketch the same question. I think he said the arms are still in development, but aren't ready to ship now...but I don't want to speak for him, so I'll let him respond. But, he did say that the current arms are fine for the Red Epic...hopefully, they should work for your configuration.

Ketch,

Quick follow-up question.

I basically want to know if you can hook a belt clip (from Red, the DSMC model) to the Ronin, and still have the functionality? Or will the cord somehow restrict motion? I know some motion (like the flip upside down) won't work, but for all the other basic motions, will the wire connected from something like a belt clip to the camera on a Ronin be good/bad/or just ugly in terms of functionality?

As always, a sincere thank you for your time and contribution! I doubt I (or a lot of other Redusers/other forum watchers) would even be considering a Ronin rig if it hadn't been for your writeup...and the pending review (although you've basically already gave it pretty positive reviews).

Thanks Ketch!

Rome, a belt clip could be used, but is to be considered that anything that comes form a Cable connected device not directly mounted on the Ronin that can sin freely with it, will at some point impede it's movement, and in this it's stabilization, however it can be used as I have tested it with great success, but you can't go reverse mode form standard mode with it, but you can go to briefcase mode and back no problem, but the moments need to be slow, and the cable been that it is not a thin and as flexible as it should be does pul a little on the Ronin, but those motors are really strong and do a great job at not allowing the cable to effect the stabilization.

Try it out yourself and see what I mean, you'll see that there is a lot you can do, but some moves just can't be done.

Ketch,

Understood and your analysis is much appreciated. I get my Ronin next week (hopefully by Wednesday/Thursday) and by Friday, I will post some pics and stuff. Like I said, I like unboxing's so that will be first. Nothing major, just what I got and what's in the package. Then I will rig it up and try to do a quick balance to see how it works...I might even try some of those quick fancy moves to that I'll probably never do in real life just to see how the gimbal motors react lol!

Thanks again Ketch!

I've GOT IT !!! :thumbup::emote_happyhappy:..... at Friday night from http://1uas.com/Ronin/ronin1 :001_tongue:

Work very good and this size of cable ( 10") is good to connect to FRONT P-Tap in NORMAL position ....

...and to BACK P-Tap in UPSIDE down position :

I'm trying to connect Ronin to Steadicam Arm I have :

..and I don't like it ... here Ronin in Upright Mode :

Much better... but still not good enough because my Steadi-Arm definitely very poor quality ...heavy ...and produce more PAIN in my back :emote_headwall:...than steady shoot .. :nonod:

I would prefer just to hold Ronin on my hand !!!

without Steadicam Arm support Ronin work very good, even I don't make much fine adjustment in PC-Assistant yet ..

Sergei,

Have you considered a "Easyrig"?...I've been looking at them, and I'm wondering if they won't help with the weight of the camera/gimbal setup...

Hey Sergei...

I'm also considering a Ronin and doing a bit of homework since I'm not sure my main camera (Sony F3) will fit. I thought about getting a BMD Cinema exclusively to live on the Ronin and I also plan on getting a video transmitter. One word of caution for you: The Ronin is built to support DJI's Lightbridge. It looks like lightbridge only supports HDMI and composite SD video - neither of which the BMD camera will output.

I'm sure there are other video transmitters that can be used on a Ronin / BMD 4K combo but I'm not sure the lightbridge is going to work. Maybe an SDI -> HDMI converter? Someone please correct me if I'm wrong on this.

For now, I might just order it - use my old Canon T2i (with HDMI) and see if the F3 will fit without the XL arms which seem to be not available as soon as the standard version.

Or maybe I'll just buy an Epic. ;)
Here someone show pictures with Sony FS700 and even Sony F5/F55 on Ronin ..

so maybe it's possible ... :yesnod:

I don't want to buy DJI's Lightbridge .. I have SDi-to HDMI converter

so need to buy another wireless Video-transmitter for less than $1000

too expensive ... $3500 for just help me hold the gimbal? :banghead: I would prefer to play with this :

Congrats Sergei!

Yeah I must say that for me working the Ronin on a stead arm will never happen, I just don't see it... The point for me of th eGimbal is to eliminate all together the cumbersome heaviness and painful set ups of the Steady.

Thank you, Ketch! ... Here is my first real test of Ronin:

It's NOT a "film", just a test.. even I would prefer to shoot it on 11mm with much wider lens - Tokina 11-16mm F2.8 instead as I did it with Sigma 18-35mmF1.8 ..

Here my SECOND Ronin Test ( with Tokina 11-16mm ) -->

I don't even make any correction, except to torn upside down one little part taken in Upright Mode ..

...and I like Ronin more and more !

Try tweaking the side to side play. There's a lot of side to side jerky motion in your shots that could be smoothed out in the settings.

I notice it.. but I don't know yet how to play with settings in PC-Assistant .. When I try another gimbals, based on Alexmos software I getting help from it's inventor -Aleksey Moskalenko ( we both speak Russian :wink5: ) and we discuss his last addition - Digital filters to remove resonances: 3 x Notch filters, 2nd-order low-pass filter
so.. I hope I will find out how to play with Ronin PC-Assistant .. for me it is not so easy to understand it in English ...
