  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

dji Ronin (XL) Multi Test-Shoot/Review!

Ha ha... I wish I had stopped for a moment and think about to ask for their numbers... Too much passion at work does that to you... :)

All I can say is that so far the Ronin, has been addictive, you just don't won't to do any shots without... It seems that there is always a why for its use... But Thorn is really sore, as He did most of the hand held work on the Ronin, He basically had bigger guns then maine currently so it seemed fair for him to take the load he he, but fact is that He just loves it and won't put it down...

After several days of continuos use it is leaving a mark... Fact is that in order to do al day shooting with the Ronin, or any other Gimbal for that matter with a fully loaded Epic camera or any other camera weighing in at 25LB+ you really need an Easyrig like instrument to support your workload...

For this, I look forward to Test your Serene on the EasyRig, and see if I can fall in love with this set up and not kill any of my operators or myself for those looong shooting days with the Ronin.

I had to look up to google translate for your ( malapropism) word for sure. hahaha

well I was hopping there would be more than one scene hahaha thats why I posted plural.

Anyway I still have time to improve my english, Iam only nearly 50 :scared:

You will be blown for the latest production design performance Ketch. Its so reactive and smooth, that it makes the gimbal float in zero gravity space.
Iam glad because I have spent sleepless nights on this and endless geometrical calculations and simulations to achieve this.

Kind regards

Constantine, you should be voted some stock in both Easyrigs and Ronins parent companies- your Serene go-between is going to quadruple sales of both.

Very happy to hear that Constantine!!

I am still trying to see how Summer schedule can be moved around with my shoots so to be able to travel to the Netherlands and attend IBC... So to try it out first hand.

Now editing away... Stay Tuned!!

Hi Ketch
This is probably a stupid question and I have asked it else where with no answers.
Can you switch this the Ronin on i.e. arm it while you are holding it or does it have to be on its stand an absolutely still for it to arm correctly.
Thanks

Hi Mark,

with the Ronin off or with it's motor in "Kill Mode" you can transport it and or lay it down, but I would not suggest it as a standard practice... And yes you can turn it on, arm it, in any position, but if you have been carrying it off or with the Kill Motor mode, and the camera has gone several twists around it self, it could possibly actually end up damaging the cable, if no cable is attached to the monitor and you are operating with a wireless monitor, then tho sis no problem.

Just remember that the motors are very powerful, and will force the camera in its position no matter were you placed before, but not strong enough to snap a RED LCD cable, yet I would always top try and at list hold the ronin in it's horizontal stander position via the top handle or side handles as it would seat on the stand just for safety.

But no, it does not need to be on the stand to be armed, just hold it in standard mode as described, and turn it on, then go ahed and move it in to either Reverse or Briefcase mode as needed.

I am going to vent on here for a couple of seconds so please forgive me.

DJI are showing an absolute disregard for UK buyers of the Ronin. From what I hear from the distributors, they refuse to give up to date information, and have to be chased around for days before even short emails are replied. I have just heard this morning that they sent only 5 units to their major U.K supplier. From the info on here, AMP received a significant consignment a few days/a weeks ago.

Let me say here - we do not pay less for the product than our American cousins. To be treated like second class citizens (as an afterthought) is really rude. i have been reading this thread for sometime about DJI's customer service, and they have tried to argue they do a decent job. But even their distributor in the UK is frustrated with them.

DJI - I don't know if anyone from the company is reading this - but you guys need to do better. It's one thing to create a product, its quite another to develop a good reputation and deliver good customer service.

Availability of the XL-arms ???

Availability of the XL-arms ???

Hello Ketch,

can you, or any of the people you are working with at DJI, shed any light on the availability of the XL-arm for the Ronin.

A precise date would be preferred, but if not possible a timeframe would be helpful as well.
As in "the XL-arms will be available at august …. 2014 at the earliest and … …. … at the latest.

Even though you might be working with a prototype,
it is not like DJI is putting it's first product to the market so they should have a pretty good idea about the timeframe.
Pricing would also be interesting information.

Thanks,

Tom

Sorry to hear that Nosa,

Willis does read this forum and I am sure He will see what it can be done to address this issue, but I think it might have actually to do with the total amount of preorders received by each country, and not because they decided to give a lesser service to any one given country.

Hi Tom,

I do not work for DJI of course, just a friend and Beta tester, but what I can say is that the XL arms were discussed at length and taken very seriously right away by DJI thru Willis, after our first talk at NAB, and I was the only one in the world with a pair of them, which were tested and returned to DJI to also test themselves and go forward form the first design.

What I can add is that while this longer arms allow for larger camera set ups, it is also import an that the design it self as well as consideration of both center of gravity for the Pan axis must be given proper study in order to assure that the end user gets a properly working Gimbal capable of easily balance and sustain camera load and proper support as with the standards arms.

For this, there can not really be a specific date till this tests are complete, and obviously I can not provide any detail info till I either get a new XL arms set or DJI itself finishes their work and releases them directly.

Hi Ketch,

thanks for all your great info! I am as happy and impresed with the first bit of playing with the Ronin as you are.

I have asked this elsewhere but havent received more than one reply, so I thought I'd ask you as someone with a lot of experience with the Ronin. I have a little issue, and would like to hear from others if this is common, or if I picked up a bad copy or something.

When I move the handles rather quickly from side to side in the roll axis, the camera (Blackmagic Cinema Camera in this test, with a cage, weighing in at about 5 Kgs) will start to wobble, mostly in the pan axis. Notice that this happens only with movement in the roll axis, both other axes can be rocked like crazy and it will stay stable. Also, it will happen regardless of follow mode on or off, and regardless of briefcase mode enabled or not.

I have done very careful balancing in every axis, and double checked it (as a steadicam op I'm familiar with how important proper balance is).

During this sort of quick movement of the handles in the roll axis, curiously the pan motor registers high power levels,
and if continued for a few seconds, the motors will shut off for a few moments as described in the manual as the safety stop.

Did you notice this correlation of handle rocking in the roll axis with instability?

Its probably not an issue for everyday use, but in special cases like offroad driving or aerobatic flying or the like it might be detrimental, so I'm hoping to find out if all Ronins exhibit this behaviour, so that maybe DJI could consider this in their firmware updates sometime.

Thanks for your replies and all the best

Frederic

Ketch,

Great review and information! This helps my decision making process in ordering one.

Thank you

Hey Frederic,

This might need some finer adjustments via the actual Ronin Assistant which unfortunately for now is a Windows only app.

Did you do the Auto Tune Stability via the iOS App after first balancing?

Did you also do a Calibrate System?

And was the Center Axis dead centered when you did this?

If not you might need to set the center manually via the Controller then run the Calibrate Center.

Ketch,

Great review and information! This helps my decision making process in ordering one.

Thank you

Glad ot help Matthew!

Wish I could do more and do it faster, unfortunately my travels across the globe ended up not helping with this, so much has been happening at once that time has been very limited, but still working on it, and finally done our first major shoot with it and now taking it to Post and looking forward to show it off.

Hey David,

The XL arms are NOT standard, but they are an Accessory like Kit that you can purchase separately once they become available, and mount yourself on to the standard Ronin, with care of course.

Unfortunately I have no idea whom has them in stock, but I do know that Europe dealers have already got some delivered.

As for tour test, I am actually to come to Germany, most likely stopping at Creuznach on my way to the Netherlands, and attend IBC... Just not sure of exact dates, and gown far you would be form my itinerary.

David try contancting Kopterworx as I know they are one of the biggest deales. Mention my name, it my help as we are friends :D

otherwise i want some test footage Ketch!!! :) interested in your view on it... hurry :P

Hey Ketch,

thanks so much that's exactly the input I needed right now.
I have done an auto tune of course after careful balancing. I have not yet calibrated the system although it did arrive perfectly dead center. I will do this now and report back. Windows only is no problem, but the manual sais the windows app (aside from firmware update) is the very same as the iOS app - is that not the case, are there more options? I'll try to find out in detail. I did notice though that some settings (such as briefcase mode -> off get messed up when switching between windows and the iOS app.

What specific finer adjustments do you recommend?

Again, thanks a lot for your help, much appreciated.
