  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

dji Ronin (XL) Multi Test-Shoot/Review!

David try contancting Kopterworx as I know they are one of the biggest deales. Mention my name, it my help as we are friends :D

otherwise i want some test footage Ketch!!! :) interested in your view on it... hurry :P

Uros,

It is coming... Now in the Editing room... I said it form the beginning that I would take my time, because i knew from the moment I took the Beta testing upon self what I would do with and what I would need to do for DJI...

I did not wanted to do technical tests but a real world shoot, not one dedicated to the Ronin, but instead throw the Ronin in to a production were the Ronin was to be just an other tool of the trade, and needed to work flawlessly as such, and fortunately after the first testiest and reports sent to DJI, it did so, and that is why it went it to Production so fast.

There are other projects in the works right now, which will continue to call for the use of the Ronin in turn continuing to showcase it's capabilities and will post those too when done.

Thanks all for the patient... :)

Hey Ketch,

thanks so much that's exactly the input I needed right now.
I have done an auto tune of course after careful balancing. I have not yet calibrated the system although it did arrive perfectly dead center. I will do this now and report back. Windows only is no problem, but the manual sais the windows app (aside from firmware update) is the very same as the iOS app - is that not the case, are there more options? I'll try to find out in detail. I did notice though that some settings (such as briefcase mode -> off get messed up when switching between windows and the iOS app.

What specific finer adjustments do you recommend?

Again, thanks a lot for your help, much appreciated.

My pleasure Frederic.

The Software which ONLY gets installed thru Windows PC while as exact as the iOS app, it serves to do your Software upgrade hooking up to the Ronin via a USB, this type of Software Upgrade can only be done this way.

The "Calibrate Center" found on the "More" menu, is a different calibration and only needs to be done if the Center Pan axis was not to be dead center, which should not happen often, but if it does there is a cure... :)

"Calibrate System" also found under the "More" menu, is a different thing, and that is what calibrates your entire Gimbal after your first Balancing, which should be down as close as possible, meaning that when properly balanced the camera set up could be tilted up or down and or rolled either way while the Ronin is "OFF" and the Gimbal should NOT move... However if such perfect balancing can not be had for any reasons, the Ronin's motors will take care of the slack by the calibration, which allows for the Ronin to make sure the motors understand were and how much slack they need to take over form any axis... A great system really.

"Auto Tune Stability" found under the Gimbal menu, is what you need to do each time at first hand after balancing.

While this could seem a bit confusing, with all the options, I have not gotten in to details as DJI is about to go Pro on their support, and in thrush only a video would be good to showcase precisely what to do and how to do it, and I might also do that, if I see there is a need for.

Hi guys! If you need any support / assistance with your Ronins - please go to here...:

Let us keep this thread focused on Ketch's review and any general discussions / questions about the gimbal, various configurations and accessories, etc...

Thank You

Thanks Peter!

Ketch, what do you think about mounting a Sony FS700 without the XL arms?
This is what I asking myself, even I order Ronin for my Blackmagic Production Camera 4K, because I may need to RENT FS700 sometime to shoot SlowMo, when my Clients agree to pay for renting FS700 with Odyssey 7Q :)
So I try to answer myself to that question:

FS700-on-Ronin.jpg

.....as you can see, there is about 120mm from "Central Mounting point" on FS700 body and the back side of it... and we have 140mm space in Ronin...
So, seems like even we don't have any space for adjustment, we may able to use FS700 with SMALL, LIGHT and SHORT lenses, like Tokina 11-16mm F2.8 or something even smaller..

If I understand it right - the bigger lens at front - the more space we need behind camera body for balancing ...and the opposite...

Of course we need to try it in reality, but this I can do only when I'll get my Ronin :)
====================

Also I was thinking about "How much space I need to shoot in 4K RAW with Blackmagic, and compare it size to 4K RAW recording on RED Epic ... and I was surprised - on 480GB SSD disk with my BMPC4K I can shoot only 24 minutes...
and I need to buy SanDisk Extreme PRO 960GB disk to shoot RAW, instead of my SanDisk Extreme -II disks... Pro-version is faster.. So, this 960GB disk give me 48minutes of recording, two of them ( minimum needed ) - 1Hour 36minutes... ($1200)
So, I have to pay $600 for every 48 minutes of recording time ...
BPMC4K record in 12bit DNG RAW... when RED use different level of compression
Is there someone who can say something about DNG RAW compare to REDCODE ?
How good DNG RAW is? I'd like to know in case to find out if someone use BMPC4K as BACK-UP camera with RED Epic ?

as of 1 week, we are the only official dji ronin dealer in holland. as you are from germany, you might be able to pass by and test the rig. we have a demo model in the shop;) please contact us trough roninrental.com if you want to;)
Is the XL arm now standard? Or where can I order it?

Also is there any company that has the Ronin in stock?

I need one rather soon to test it with my remote pan bar.

I am actually going to test an FS700 on my Ronin later tonight. Will let you know the results with both an L lens and Zeiss Contax (very light). If there isn't enough room for balancing, I made end up added weights to the back of the body. Luckily the 700 is very light so there is plenty of playroom with adding weight.

Good Kyle,

Please report, but unless you have a very light lens, which will allow for the camera plate to be mounted at the rear end of the camera and pushed to the very end of the runway on the dovetail of the Ronin itself, it might not work as it should...

However, if additional weight were to be used then this could be possible, but then you are no longer balancing a camera set up it self, but using actual counterweights to do so, which there is really nothing so terribly wrong with this, just becomes even more unfriendly to hand held, unless used in cooperation of an Easyrig or the likes.

Amazing. Got word from Productiongear today that our Ronin has just shipped. Hooray. So 'maybe' I was a little harsh on my previous post. Will post some footage with the Ronin/scarlet combo tomorrow. will even try the F5 on it as well (don't think it will work though, but will try)

What have I told you Nosa... :)

Very happy for you and congrats on your new Ronin, you'll love it!

Have not done it, neither have I used the camera, so I don't know the specifics, and don't have time to go search for it, but the Ronin can handle a hell of a list of cameras/lenses.

For larger longer camera set ups the XL arms would be needed, or an addition of counter weights applied.

Will try it today and post. I know it is a Reduser forum but I know a few guys have been asking about the F5 as well. Will also do the Scarlet and post some pics as well (of course).

4pin XLR on the rear of the F5 going to a battery on the top handle.

To be honest i didnt try, It might be possible with a light lens. A Vlock battery up top gives me options to power other items up on the handle.

I don't think it's possible, because when I look at your picture: ( I hope it's OK, that I modified it a little :) )

Ronin_017.jpg

I see a VERY LIMITED SPACE behind the camera, and even if you put very thin V-lock battery there and it's fit, - you still will have NO SPACE for TILTING:

Ronin_07b.jpg

I took someone pic and try to make this illustration in Photoshop... and hope it's show us how little space we have behind the camera ...

to keep the External Battery and RAW recorder for FS-700, F5 or F55 SOMEWHERE OUTSIDE RONIN is not a big deal anyway, so I don't worry about it :)

( Sorry about my English )

Sergei - it is not as simple as that. The moment you add something that heavy (like V-lock) to the rear - you have to move the whole camera forward to offset the balance. This is why adding weight to the rear of the camera allows for other lenses (and cameras) to be used.
If you look at JC's config here - he has a (rather large V-lock) at the rear and balanced:

Just a quick test with my Ronin & Scarlet on a friends cablecam rig :) Was also tested with a BMCC

If JC used the Endura E-7s (which is a lot more compact) - you will gain even more space at the back...
Now imagine that you would be able to add two V-locks to the rear of the camera side-by-side - that will push the camera even more forward giving you extra room at the back...
So things are rather complex and you need to try and test a combination that works for you.

:sifone: Peter

PS: Those are my pics and no worries - this kind of modification for explanation purposes is perfectly fine...

I think there's a sweetspot in weight/size when it comes to batteries, but I don't know what that is yet. I attempted to mount my Scarlet with an RPZ 17-50, O'connor matte box and one filter with both a 65 W/H and a 95W/H Globalmediapro battery and there wasn't enough room. I could leave it front heavy and the motor was taking care of it just fine, but I didn't want to stress the motors. So I'll be mounting the battery on the handle with a flexible power cable down to the camera.
In that configuration I also have a Bartech Digital receiver, a Heden 21 motor and a Paralinx Arrow+. No sweat for the motors.
In the past, having dealt with the Movi several times, I could feel that an Epic/Scarlet were right on the edge of the capacity, and made the whole rig very temperamental...

I will test with a battery on the rear, As noted above, adding weight to the back will cause the camera to have to slide forward, so there might be room.

Sergei - it is not as simple as that....
Yes! It's not that simple! :iagree: ... - RED body ( on your video sample, on my "illustration" and on that picture ) is only 15sm long :

...but Sony F5/F55 body is 21sm long !!! ...even Sony FS700 is shorter! - only 19.3sm !!!
