DJI RONIN PRO SUPPORT

Thanks for the confirmation Alen. Yes we have a support request into DJI and they have our video. I will keep you posted as soon as I'll hear something

Thanks Frederic. Really something that seems strange. But apart from that I am getting real nice, smooth footage. I am wondering how some of this bad stuff is operated. Ronin may bring some new people into the game...

Frederick - from what I am seeing in that video it sure seems to be unbalanced rear-to-front adjustment.
Best test for this is the one shown in Patrick's video - pan the Ronin 90 degrees to any side so that the top horizontal bar (the one between pan motor and the rear section with the battery) is parallel with the handle-bar. Then tilt the rig using the top handle forward and back and see if it stays put...

Peter,

thanks for your continued support, it's great to have someone responding when DJI is only just building their support.

As I said, regardless of all the errors that guy did on his first video, there is the issue, and it happens even if perfectly balanced.
I am sure you just overread some details in my previous post - and who could blame you, there's just so much one person can follow up on =)

Please note, that my careful balance included careful front/back balance, i.e. balancing the pan axis. Also, as I have indicated, it is impossible
- on my copy of the ronin - to find perfect balance here, as the axis reacts as if it were not properly centered. While on all other axes, perfect balance
is easy to attain, at least to the level that is commonly accepted as "perfect balance" (the Ronins own cables will limit this to a certain point),
it is not on the pan axis, as it will always return to a centered position from both directions, indication the axis being off-center to one side.
I have found this to be worse on another copy, which in turn showed even more of the "shutoff when rolling issue", which I take as some
level of confirmation of my theory. It may also relate to a combination of a decentered pan and roll axis.

It is very hard to measure this with a micrometer without disassembling the ronin to some extent, but the behaviour during balancing,
described in detail in an earlier post, to me, is proof enough.

Please let me assure you again, Peter, that at least on the one's I have tested, the problems are not related to user error in balancing.

We could replicate this on multiple units and, there are others confirming it now, on their units, too. Thanks guys for your support, I'll keep
you updated as soon as I hear from DJI!

We are impressed with our first test results as much as you are. Very, very nice stabilization. It is a little tricky getting the framing spot on (which, I think, is why questionable framing is the #1 issue I find in Gimbal operated videos), but that will improve with practice I'm sure.

Also, I think you answered your own question there. It doesn't take much for some "new people", inexperienced with purposefully moving a camera in space, and then of course, moving a camera with their body, to get bad results using any stabilizer. Then also, of course the Ronin stabilizes only pan and tilt - translational movments, i.e. front/back, up/down, left/right is what you need to train your body to smooth out, with some possible assistance by a steadicam arm or the like. An experienced Steadicam op for example will know every detail of this, has trained it for thousands of hours and thus is predestined to be a great gimbal op.

I have a Ronin that will be here on Wednesday and I will run some tests to see if my unit exhibits this same issue. I have always built my own gimbals with the Alexmos controllers and they work extremely well. My thoughts on the Pan axis balance issues are to apply a small amount of weight to the light side of the vertical aluminum arm in order to balance the pan axis in the vertical plane and then readjust the pan balance in the horizontal plane as the instructions and the youtube videos describe. This will get the pan axis balanced in both planes. It may or may not have any effect on the motors shutting down but it can't hurt to try. The machining precision that is required to ensure that the pan balance adjustable joint on the top beam which would keep the two beams in perfect alignment would be extremely tight. I will be adding a downlink transmitter and a few other small light devices to the Ronin which can be stuck to the side of the vertical arm with Velcro or double sided tape. They can be used as balance weights.

Got mine today and spent about an hour watching all the videos and balancing it. When I turn it on the TITL motor vibrates like crazy, makes a bunch of noise and then shuts down. It also gets very warm. All the other motors seem fine.

My question is do I go to B&H for a replacement or is this something that can be fixed at the LA service centre?

Very Disappointed in DJI's quality control as it was broken right out of the case.

I'm having the same loud vibration issue. i balanced a black magic 4k at the office. it worked fine. i take the unit home to try my scarlet on it and i get it close to balanced ( i have anton bauer dionic batteries and a wooden camera battery plate. not the red side battery module.) and it worked fine. I then started to try different configurations with said set up and i turn it on and the loud vibrations started. now it won't calibrate. i'm gonna try updating the firmware tomorrow. lets see if that fixes the issue. if the gimbal still doesn't work what are my options? return it to the dealer?

Vibrating motor does not mean you have a faulty unit. In most cases this indicates that your stiffness setting are too high on that particular axis. Use the PC app or the iOS app and dial down the stiffness for the axis that is vibrating.
Another issue that can cause vibrating is if you have anything loose on the camera - whether that is lens (typical for EF mount lenses), or any accessories. Also make sure all the wing-nuts and bolts are tight.

Thanks Peter,

I guess Auto Calibrate is a work in progress? I manually set the stiffness on all axis to 25 and that sorted out the problem. Auto calibrate sets them all to 65 which seems to have been causing the problem.

On a second note my Redrock Micro Remote basestaion is blinking rapidly and not getting enough power. I have tried both the front and back P-taps. A few others have had this problem as well and I was wondering if anyone has sorted it out?

My unit arrived yesterday from B&H and I assume that it has the latest firmware but I will need to borrow a PC to confirm.

Thanks for all your help on this Peter! BTW I grew up in Japan and go back from time to time, great place to live!

thanks for the tip. i reset everything to default config and all worked like a charm. any chance the pc assistant software be updated for the mac? i hate having to hunt down a pc to install the latest firmware.

Hi Adam - and yes, DJI is aware of the auto-tune issues and it is working on the fix which will be available soon...

We just got done with a spot and used the Ronin in 4-5 shots and it worked flawlessly. Really happy with it.

At this point the only really dissapojnting thing is the breakout box doesn't have enough juice to power a paralinx and Redrock microremote at the same time :/

Brock - RRM is aware of this issue and is working directly with DJI on the solution. I have seen the new RRM beta firmware and it seems to work well - but still more testing is needed to make it rock solid. Expect update on the situation directly from RRM in about 2 weeks time...

Are there any calibration tutorials yet? I mean beyond the basic auto calibrate settings in the app.

DJI is currently producing the videos that will address this and many other topics. They should be released soon.

Here is a thing about the AUTO-TUNE - even if it does set the stiffness too much for some of the lighter cameras - it also does a lot in the background that you are not aware of.
So - in the meantime - I recommend you guys run the AUTO-TUNE anyway and if the stiffness ends up being too much (your motors will vibrate) - just dial it in manually via the app...

This video does a great in depth look to fine tuning the Ronin. 30 minute breakdown.

thanks for this! Ive been looking for something like this since last week!

Im curious about everyone else's ronin set up... post some pictures! Curious too about how their powering their Epics. There's gotta be a way to be able to breakdown the rig and get it on the ronin shooting quickly. It's almost as if you need 2 camera set ups... One for the ronin one for normal shooting. In a real world environment your just not gonna have time on a shoot to do the switch over

I can confirm Frederic's findings - my unit has the same "shutdown when rolling issue" even with a very carefully balanced rig. When it's working properly, the stabilization is really nice but my unit is actually rather easily provoked into shutting down - at times, it will even do so while starting up on the stand - which makes usability on actual shoots very limited at the moment. Looking forward to a comment from DJI on the issue.

Hey Sebastian,

Thanks for your comment! Could you please try to see if your pan Axis can be balanced really well or not?
It's best if you hold it on briefcase mode and rest one side of the handles on the gound to make it straight vertical. Do you see any balancing issues like it returning to a horizontal position when turned, suggesting the axis may not be dead centered?

Hi Wayne, I had the idea of attaching weights to improve side to side balance too, and will be testing it when I have time. However, I dont consider this a proper solution, as the manufacturing precision should be manageable enough to at least get close.

My measurements suggest it's off by more than 1mm but that may also be the other side of that axis which would be irrelevant. I'm not going to disassemble it right now to check though, as it performs well enough to use it in most situations =)
