  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DJI RONIN PRO SUPPORT

Well, if Ronin user have some footage without slomowtion and stab in post, please show us.

Since 2 days, I have mine, balance ok (camera don't move on every side when Ronin is off), I auto balance the Ronin, sometimes the motors did lot of nose and vibration, so I adjust in my case the Tilt until I don't have vibration anymore. On car it's good, smooth as I hope, but when I walk, not, for each steps I have a small vibration even if i walk carefully.

I reset the Ronin in case I did something wrong on the setting, same case. And I just plug a 5d for the test (better lighter for start for my back :o))

Thanks !

Send me an email to peter(at)derylgroup(dot)com and I will send you a download link for 24P non-post-stabilised footage test with fully configured Ronin.

In the meantime - since you are using a 5D - are you using the lens support bracket?
About levelling the camera - there are 3 axis and horizontal level you need to setup - so basically you need to balance four parameters.
Patricks video linked in the first post shows this in a way. Try rolling the camera 90˚on its side and see if it stays put. Then try to tilt the whole gimbal and see if the camera still stays put.
Proper balancing of a gimbal takes practice and complete understanding of how the axis correlate. I have seen many "balanced" gimbals that simply were not.
I am not saying that you do not know how to balance the gimbal - I am just trying to make sure that you do...
If the auto-tune ends up setting the levels too high - try dialling them manually to about 20~25 level and then try to operate the Ronin again.
What axis are the vibrations in right now?

Thanks Peter for your fastfeedback :)
I will send an email for the download the footage.

Well, my balance seems ok because the camera didn't move on any positions and degres. I will re-start and looking again the Patrick video. I use the support bracket, until now I use only 35 and 50mm, will looking for wide angle this afternoon.

Since I understood that I can adjust the auto tune, it's always the tilt the problem, so I drop it by the half.

Thanks !

Edit : When I looking another gimball movie footage, some have the same problem as mine, not completely stab so maybe it could be a problem with my walking skills, i need to learn to move like a cat :o))) Because on car, no problem, fantastic to reverse the Ronin, very smooth.

One more thing about the vibration guys. Note that the wing nuts are independent of the alen (hex) bolts inside of them. After a while you might have a rather loose bolt even thou the nut is tight. So if you are having vibrations please go around the wing nuts and tighten the bolts inside of them. Not so tight that you can't undo the wing nuts without tools - just tight enough...

Hope this helps...

Hi peter,

I tried to put on a gh4 with canon lens, which is waay lighter than the epic cooke combo from yesterday and it doesn't vibrate, but when i push the autotune settings it puts all the 3 motors at 62 stiffness, and with the epic at 63 stifness. So there has to be something wrond with the autotune software, the stiffness should be wat lower. Is there a rough guideline to stiffness in relation to weight. Like 5kg would be around stiffness 60, 2kg around 20. Is something like that possible just for a ballpark figure?

Hey Brock,

Just out of curiousity what if you power the Paralinx via our included P tap regulator?

or if you run the redrock by itself does it work?

if you are using v mount or gold mount batteries maybe run one accessory of that, other off the camera stage?

Even with the p-tap adapter it still causes the RR to shutdown and reset. If I turn everything off and JUST run the microremote FF, it still flashes like crazy as if on low battery but seems to run ok (this is with no resistance, just sitting on the floor), so basically it's still useless...

I think a great solution to test at DJI would be a firmware update allowing .5 extra amps (3.5 total up from 3) and see if i can run the paralinx and FF then.

Max, my Unit does the exact same thing, I get 62 or 63 every time with Auto Tune no matter if i've got an F5 in there or a 5D in the Ronin.

59 - 62 are the only numbers I've seen my autotune result in, too. Simple Nikon D800 with lens or fully rigged outmBlackmagic Cinema Camera with cage, V-Mount Battery, a heavy Zeiss Zoom and remote focus. It works with the D800 though, with very limited vibration, but I will try manually turning it down now.

Same here, 63 for 5d or FS700 with counter weight. The Tilt hast lot of vibration so I put it down to 30. Finally, without autotune and tune manually after balancing, how we can set it ? Is there some rules to do something good ?

Welp, didn't get any replies in the other thread, so I'll try here.

I ran into a weird issue: Auto Tune Stability doesn't seem to work. It makes no difference if I'm running the app on an iPad via Bluetooth, or on a PC via USB, same thing happens when I run Auto Tune: the gimbal makes 4-5 very short twitches, after which it locks all gimbal movement; I can hear the motors whine slightly, and the gimbal acts like its one solid block of metal. I've tried this a few times, waiting longer each time for the gimbal to come out of it. The longest I waited was about a minute, after which I switched the gimbal off.

Have you run Auto Tune? What is supposed to happen?

Balance the gimbal perfectly first then autotune it

The Auto tune doesn't work the way I thought it would. In a closed loop control system, the adjustment will be made such that the error is decreased so that it becomes infinite. (An example of a closed system is when u drive your car you make minor adjustments to correct steering, which from feedback eyes/ brain etc) Meaning the stiffness will be set to the cameras momentum from stand still to moving of centre of gravity which it is at when u physically balance camera on Ronin. Each camera has different mass and each camera takes different amount of torque to bring it back to centre of gravity.

in my previous post the gh4 has a stiffness value of 58 - 60, which is too high. It should be near 20 or lower. The yaw axis will have a higher value followed by roll then pitch.

The auto balance was one of the key features that sold this gimbal in their marketing strategy. If this doesn't work as advertised then it need to be fix as a high priority.

can I ask the redusers after you use the auto balance feature the motors are near silent. Only when you put your ear close to anyone of the motors you notice they are on. If you move the yaw, roll or pitch axis with your hand do you start hearing a loud pitch squealing noise? I'll try and record this and post, trying to understand to see if it's just my gimbal or every gimbal makes this noise.

No, auto tune definitely doesnt quite work how we thought it might. Mine just sets the stuffness settings to 63 every time without fail.. no matter what camera i put in there.

autotune works fine over here, around 50 with gh4, 14-42 lens, paralinx and atomos ninja star. and around 60-65 with a basic red setup. both work flawless! and nikon d800 is around 57.

Thanks. I did, as much as a GH4 with a very small C-mount lens can be balanced.

Those who got the autotune to work: how long does the process take, and does the assistant give you any indication the tuning process has finished?

it takes about 10-20 seconds. autotune symbol rotates on screen when busy, and that leaves when its done.

Thank you Vincent. When I perform autotune, the rotating symbol disappears after 10-20 seconds, but the gimbal is left in a solid-as-a-rock configuration, as if all motors are locked into their current position.
