  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DJI RONIN PRO SUPPORT

it wont stabilize after autotune? are motors turned of?
Autotune process leaves the motors on, at full (?) strength, and locks them in place. I can hear the motors whine, and there's no stabilization, it's like the Ronin is made from one solid piece of metal. Normal functionality returns when I power the gimbal down, then up again.

I received my Ronin yesterday and today I took it out and mounted my Epic on it. Very easy and straight forward system.

Autotune works ok. I got gains of 64 on all axes. My first impressions are that the Smooth track is quite smooth. I feel it is too slow and it has a lot of deadband even I zeroed them all. But it works and actually it works really good. It is heavy beast so it takes some muscle to handle it but it is also super rigid which is a huge difference to Movi M10 which is so delicate.

I uploaded my first clip that I have filmed with it. By all means it is not art. Just my 3 year old daughter bicycling on our drive way. She just learned bicycling so she is quite jumpy as I was on my Ronin but the footage came out very smooth. Much better basically straight out of the box than any other gimbal I have ever used and I have tried pretty much all of them (mounted on different helicopters). No drifting of horizon!

Anyway NO post processing. Just the shot straight out of my Epic to Youtube, via RedCineX and Compressor:) Youtube music...

I think DJI has done amazing job with this and I am absolutely sure this will become a great tool for many. At the price point it sells it is absolutely great value.

I found this video on youtube. I have experienced quite the same (wobbling while rolling, not following roll axis, ...) Any thoughts on that?

Kind regards.

Holger

Hi Patrick!

Glad you like your Ronin! Try adjusting the maximum speed in the control menu and play with the various settings - you can get the SmoothTrack as smooth or as responsive as you like, just need to learn how all the settings affect each other...

Cute famile you have there!

There is so many things he is doing wrong in that video I don't know where to even begin. Putting the gimbal on the table while it's powered up, or using short USB cable and not providing enough slack while tuning and testing are just the two most obvious mistakes.
That wobble in pan axis while rolling really seems to me to be caused by unbalanced camera. The unbalanced camera will also make the motors to work that much harder which would result in the shut off safety feature to trigger.
Remember you need to balance all three axis AND the back-to-front balance as well - so 4 adjustments in total.
Many would just balance the three axis and think that's it...
I have mentioned if you are using a heavier setup and the handle grips are slipping on the CF tube - do use the included alan keys and tighten the bolts inside the wingnuts - the handles will stay put.
Also make sure to tighten the wingnut on the quick-release. The safy pin is there to prevent it sliding off from the QR mount - it does not lock it tight. In general if you feel anything is loose or you hear these clicking sounds or getting veird vibrations - go over your rig and make sure all bolts and nuts are tight and all loose cables and accessories are secured (aside of the Ronin's main signal cable).

The engineering team is looking into the auto-tune and update will be available soon...

It is interesting to see that he has the same bug im having with Breifcase mode. When i first got my unit i was able to enable BC mode and it would work fine, however it has now stopped going into BC mode, no clue why, it is definitely still enabled in the app..

Thing is, the problem he experiences right around 1 Minute is exactly what happens to 2 Ronins I've checked that were in perfect balance - its worse in this video though, i.e. occuring with smaller roll angles and slower movements, but as I have written in detail, this is an issue on some ronins even in perfect balance. Still need to get a copy of the video we made at the store or do a new one myself... But right around 1 minute into the video holger posted you see the issue. (Regardless of everything that guy is doing wrong, which he is)

Frederick - from what I am seeing in that video it sure seems to be unbalanced rear-to-front adjustment.
Best test for this is the one shown in Patrick's video - pan the Ronin 90 degrees to any side so that the top horizontal bar (the one between pan motor and the rear section with the battery) is parallel with the handle-bar. Then tilt the rig using the top handle forward and back and see if it stays put...

This is definitely a bug I can recreate this with a fully balanced GH4. Don't have to move it too vigorously for motors to cut out. Frederic have you raised this with DJI?

It would be a good idea to create a separate thread with know bugs / issues so that users can have a quick scan to see if an issue has been raised with DJI.

There is a better solution for this about to be launched. Fasten your seatbelts gentlemen...

has anybody seen the announced joystic controller fo far ?

thanks, norbert

Norbert, Willis has confirmed that they are redisigning the joystick controller as the highest priority - it should be ready soon...

Thanks for the confirmation Alen. Yes we have a support request into DJI and they have our video. I will keep you posted as soon as I'll hear something
