  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DJI RONIN PRO SUPPORT

We've just assembled DJI Ronin and balanced it with camera. No movement when put at any angle. No cables attached.

When powering on the ronin it spins once and then goes limp - i.e the motors are not giving any power. youtube clips show it should lock into position.

On the iphone DJI Assistant app I can connect with the ronin and see the ANGLE readings for pan, tilt and roll change but ALL power readings never move from 0.

When I 'auto tune stability' it shows the calibrating bar, gets to the end but the ronin has not physically moved and the power readings dont change. This is the same when I try calibrate system.

Any suggestions/pointers/ideas?
Thanks

Just to share, if anyone else has this issue. I went through tightening every nut - including the quickrelease nut that attaches the crossbar. Then re-balanced, turned it on and the motors power up.

as the first post on this thread states.

Is there a way to attach my Zamerican arm to the Handle bar of the Ronin?
I have a way to attach to rails, but that obviously makes no sense with this setup -- I have a manfrotto hotshoe/ballhead as well , but hoping to use my zamerican arm more.

i tried powering my scarlet through the ptap on my ronin. (from a laird ptap to lemo cable made for epic) it powers up just fine. has anyone tried this? if so, how long did the power last? I'm going to test it this weekend. Figured i'd ask as well. id love to power everything from just the ronin brick.

That would be good...but I`d wait till after the spare batteries begin shipping.

I would not do that......first I'm suprised it worked. As far as I heard it's not rated for the amperage that the camera pulls.

Worst case the wiring on your ronin melts or starts a fire.....I dont think it was designed for that kind of amperage.....but I can be wrong.

You should power the camera from a separate source.

Another steadicam arm / Ronin test.....

I used the Cinemilled armpost adaptor to mount it onto my steadicam arm.....then mounted that to my handsfree segway..... but it would be the same mounted to any vehicle.....atv, griptrix car, golfcart, pickup truck, cam

Check it out....smooth moves up to 12mph....

Hi guys
Just got my Ronin yesterday.
Overall it works fine my only big problem is that when i plug the ronin to a PC, the software works but it doesn't find my ronin. I know i have to put my bluetooth off in order to use it but it dosne't find it so i can't update the firmware.

My other problem is even when i put my deadban at 0 it still going super slow when i move left to right and it never seems to come back to the center even tho i did my center calibration

When i take my ronin with the top handle to create low angle. the motor is having a hard time and and when i pan left of right it gives like little shock like it's having problem doing a smooth motion. I tried putting the motor at like 10 and it dosne't really help.
I'm sure everyone got similar problem.
thanks for the help

I found that I have to first turn on the gimbal with it plugged into the PC USB and then start the assistant PC app... then it takes a moment to find it.

Hope that helps.

Please see my next post too. Since you are a new user as well, I am curious if you are experiencing any of the other issues I have had... my Ronin arrived a day ago too :)

Hi everyone,
I am new here and really appreciate all the help you give - Thank You!
I have similar problem like Pascal. Follow mode is slow and I am having problems with the center calibration too.
But I still hope to solve this by playing around a bit more.

My real problem is another one:

1) My Ronin makes a constant noise after powering on. And this still occurs when motorstiffnes is set to 0! So where does this noise (like a running pc) come from? Is there a fan build in the unit? It is definitely to noisy to film on quite location. Any ideas?

2) I have strange problems with balancing the roll axis. I watched all the tutorials several times. None of them seems to have this problem: I balance the camera laterally properly, BUT when I push the roll to one side it doesn't stay put, but falls back to properly horizontal. And the same thing, when I push it to the other side: It comes back to horizontal. So the camera is in the middle. The Tilt seems to be properly balanced, because this stays put wherever I push it. Any ideas on this issue? What am I doing wrong?

Howdy,

I am new here and new to the Ronin (arrived a day ago), but I am not new to 3-axis gimbals. I have successfully built a couple and have used a number of them (Movi 10/DJI Zenmuse/my own... and not just briefly at the NAB). I also understand the mechanics, balancing and limitations. So the issues/observations I present below are not those of a total gimbal noob, yet, I am no expert and feel I still have much to learn.

I look forward to spending a little time here on REDUSER doing just that, and hopefully I can contribute constructively as well.

Now, on to the issues (presented not to bash the Ronin, but in the spirit of helping improve it and my use/understanding of it):

1) The Ronin will not function properly without the iPhone: Until I borrowed an iPhone 5 I could not get the briefcase mode functioning (total freak-out) by using just the PC app. Also there have been other inconsistencies with the PC app that seem to clear up when using the iPhone app.

2) Ronin Auto-Tune fails with either app: I think this may be because I am using such a small camera (compared to the RED which the Ronin seems to be geared toward), the Sony A7s and the auto-tune algorithm just doesn't get it.

In my case it sets the tilt motor ‘stiffness’ so high that it violently oscillates the tilt motor at a high frequency and sounds like its going to vibrate itself to death… yikes!

This is corrected (there may be other ways but this is the one that worked for me) by powering off the gimbal, exiting all apps, removing/reinserting the battery and rebooting the gimbal while plugged into the PC (this method will not work for me using the iPhone app). Then, with the gimbal on, start the PC app and manually change the ‘stiffness’ of the tilt motor so it doesn't ‘hum’ so badly . In my case I had to dial it back from the 50-60 that auto-tune selected down to 12 where it seems to function in all attitudes without oscillation.

Pan and Roll seem to function ok with the higher settings, but not in all modes, so I back those off as well.

Again, this may be because the Ronin is not really designed around the smaller cameras even though (with some fussing) you can get it to work with them.

3)Balancing a smaller camera on the Ronin requires additional weight to be added to the top of the camera or a spacer added between the camera plate and the camera to raise it up… at least for a Sony A7s. In my case I used washers attached to a hot-shoe cover to achieve proper balance.

Unless there is another adjustment that I am not seeing, the camera tray does not slide high enough to accommodate balancing a smaller camera. Any other experiences/suggestions here?

4) I will parrot some of the other user’s laments I have read, like:

- The gimbal stand easily marring with common use.

- The sharpness of the gimbal support bracket marring the carbon cross tube (this fitting could easily be more rounded or covered with something to protect the cross arm finish).

- The red dust from the awesome (though noxious smelling) case padding.

- AND, the wobbly-wobbly handles and lack of hex key for that size of screw.

I fixed the handles by removing them (careful not to strip the el-cheapo-steel hex heads) and putting just enough vinyl electrical tape on the aluminum posts to make the handle fit snugly.

I also noticed that the handles are tapered so they fit better with one end slid on first than the other (basically you have to fuss with it).

It seems that an improvement might be for the aluminum post to go all the way through the handle so that both lock rings engage the post and not just the one.

SO, has anyone else had issues with the smaller cameras and the use of the PC app over the iPhone app?

Overall and so far, I think the Ronin is a great value and like many recently released, tech-pushing products, it has it’s issues and frustrations. I have used the Movi 10 for a day and it performed flawlessly (I understand it has issues too, I just did not come across any), BUT, you can buy 5-6 Ronins for the price of a Movi and necessary accessories.

My take away so far (pfff, after a day? like that counts) is: Beer budget and some time to fuss around=Ronin

Cheers!

PS: SUPER KUDOS to Cinemilled for their SUPER-VERSATILE Ronin plate... it will being going on a big hexacopter this next week and I am sure other platforms as well soon after.

Hey Joe! I'm new here too and just saw your post after posting my own issues :)

Your ROLL balance issue might be your vertical tilt adjustment. I have found that tiny-tiny adjustments can make all the difference. Is the sound coming from the tilt motor or the roll/pan? (put your ear right next to it or look in the assistant and see which motor is getting the most power when hanging from the stand).

Also, check your axis' with the gimbal in the briefcase position (motors off) with one of the handles supported on the bench... to get it completely dialed in can take some time... and I mean TINY adjustments!

Cheers!

Same thing here with a Panny GH4. Actually, I managed to balance the Ronin quite well when I had a very light & tiny C-mount lens on the GH4, but autotune simply locks up the gimbal and a reboot is required to do any shooting. When I put a heavier lens on the GH4, along with a riser plate (see below), balanced all 4 axis perfectly and switched the Ronin on... it basically had a nervous breakdown. The whole thing vibrates and buzzes like crazy, and I'm afraid it might burn out its motors. Autotune is of no help at all.

I've noticed the same thing.

Additionally, attaching a physically large lens (one with a large circumference) makes it impossible to mount the camera far enouch back on the camera mounting plate: the plate actually hits the lens if you try that. This leaves the camera + lens combo very front-heavy and balancing the gimbal is not possible. I solved this by attaching a riser plate between the camera and the mounting plate, but that brings along its own little set of issues.

Thanks! Good to know Petri... next week I am going to mount a GH4 on the Ronin (and a perhaps a 5D too)... I will look for a riser plate solution or maybe just transfer the washers on the hot-shoe cover to the GH4.

It would be great to hear from DJI or very seasoned Ronin users about their solutions for smaller cameras.

I was a little suspicious when it was claimed that the Ronin could fly the BMPCC to the Epic real easy-peasy... but then again what product out there doesn't come with a bit of hype... nothing to get too worked up over.

At least it seems that those flying the RED are fairly content... my guess is that that size/weight combo-ish is the sweet spot for the Ronin. It is something I have seen on the gimbals I've built... they will work well with one class of camera (due to frame and motor capacities) but when you edge outside of that, they begin having issues.... then, all you need is more patience, more time to fuss and more re-takes :)

Hi
First , to make the app work on the PC. YOU HAVE TO DOWNLOAD THE DRIVER. I was kinda stupid and didn't know. Once i'Ve downloaded the driver. it worked perfectly on the PC.
I have a pano GH4 with 24-105 Canon IS. It's worked super well to balanced. Even with auto tunes the motor was screaming for help so i had to downgrade to around 10 instead of the 62 they were choosing for me.
Deadban i put 0 to achieve the fastest but again. i don't think they are suposed to turn around mega fast. I wanted more speed to turn around but it's not happening
It's just a learning curve to know when to turn and to time yourself with the speed of the gimbal. It's like driving a bike all over again. Once you know how to adjust yourself and you can calculate your move. The machine works very well. Keep in mind. you are controling it. Not the way around.

Here's an exemple.
I wanted to turn the corners of my wall very fast but it dosne't work like that. so like 2 second before turning, I had to turn my gimble a lot so that my timing with the wall and my lenses were sync. Once you get that idea. it will make your life easier.

I still don't get it why my gimbal motor makes a lot of noise when it's a 10 but i guess i'll have to experience more.
So overall guys. Make sure it's perfectly balanced. Then autotunes kinda works but you have to dial down the motor force to a level when you feel there's no sound of a motor making a lot of noise.
Then you adjust the speed, accel and deadban. Deadban at 0 will be the fastest the gimbal goes ( i think) speed and accel dosne't really do much for me but i'll keep it testing. But that's about it for the gimbal. After that go and shoot and learn to know how it move.

I hope it helps.

Anyone else having trouble getting a tight fit with the Ronin plate on a 5D?

I have to twist the plate 360° To try and get a super tight fit but then it's too tight ( on the verge of over tightening) and scraping the bottom of the camera.
If my camera gets nudged a little bit off of the lens support the motors react, and the gimbal will be slightly unbalanced.

Hi To All,

Joe_H mentioned the Ronin is making a noise similar to a running pc or fan. I too am having the same issue emanating from the lipo battery pack. Is this an issue with everyone's Ronin or just with a few? I'm concerned whether the battery is safe or not, or that DJI are using cheap electronics in the construction of the Ronin. How can I record dialogue between two actors, in a quiet room, with the Ronin buzzing away in the background. So my question is: are all gimbals slightly noisy, or is it just the Ronin?
