  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DJI RONIN - independent review and in-depth test

That is true Uros, and there are already other companies with similar good products.

The main difference with our platform will be on cost and features for value. This is one market that needs to see lower prices for turnkey RTF drones in the heavy lifting arena, and that's what we are trying to do with our drone. It will be an affordable heavy lifter UAS aircraft at a fraction of the cost of most comparable systems, with an included all in one ground control station which we are in the process of finishing off.

I think it would be silly for us not to expect DJI to come up with their own RC aerial solution for the Ronin in line with their pricing and capabilities of the 800, 900 and 1000 series. Just saying...
Of couse they will - but it will cost silly money.

Define silly. My bet is that it will be well bellow any of the other option currently offered on the market. The cost of the Ronin itself should be a good indication...

My only question is why fly those Zeiss CP2 lenses? We have flown them many times on Epics and Dragons because that is what the Client wanted, but there is no ND solution for them that I am aware of so if you are shooting in direct sun light you are at f22 and you are still over exposed. I just have a hard time justifying using those lenses unless it is early morning, late evening or cloudy conditions.

Finally had some free time (and by that I mean at 2AM in a hotel room after just finishing configuring the Ronin for the next day early morning shoot...) to do the quick mirror-test...:

Thanks for this Peter, now the only thing I can think that is different from your unit to our units is that you have a pre production unit. Which i've been told by other beta tests has slightly different hardware in some places than our production models.

Wayne Mann - Red Motion Mount works like a charm! specially on drones where mattbox means weight and drag. But yeah its all up to clients. Also most of the beauty shots of chasing cars over the landscape happens at golden hours...
We will see what DJI will do in the bigger drone area but I think they are invitesting money where the majority of people are - lower and mid range drones. Their Zenmuse gimbals are still the best in the world due to being made for specific camera... so packages like S900 for GH4 and Phantoms for GoPro will make the most money for them for sure.
Drones for bigger cameras are not a market you can make a lot on selling big big numbers.

Has anyone experienced the Ronin not responding well to the SmoothTrack mode? I had my Epic on it on a shoot the other day and no matter what I did within the app and gimbal, I couldn't get it to react to my movements, it just kept spinning. Anyone have any ideas?

Justin,
What do you mean it just kept spinning? As if the gimbal isn't on?

Few things you could try:
1) Autotune & adjust stiffness
2) Make sure that Smoothtrack is on in the app, typically just set your top right switch to the middle position.
3) Adjust the speed & acceleration accordingly in the app.
4) Make sure the battery sits in the port completely (there's a number of callers that didn't have their battery all the way in)
5) Call our Pro Support Team @ 818.235.0789*1
6) Email our Pro Support Team @ ronin@dji.com

Hope that helps, thanks!

Hi Peter, not sure if I understood your comment, (if it was directed at me, that is). DJI is coming with the DJI S1200 which will be able to fly the Ronin, not sure when they will release more news about it but they are working on it.

Our Samson is not in the same category of the S1000 and the upcoming S1200 (ours is bigger than a 1200 size multicopter) therefore our platform will be more in line with what other UAS manufacturers have come up with in size and capabilities before. The only major difference with other brands will be in cost and features for value, like I mentioned above. Not an easy thing to do for a start up project, but not impossible either. :)

For the standard "basic" version (Quad and X8 configuration with ground control station and gimbal) we are trying to bring the cost down to something along the lines of what a RTF DJI S1000 usually goes for, and we are still trying to make it more affordable by using flight controllers such as Pixhawk, Hoverfly, and others such as Xaicraft SuperX, and even considering testing NAZA V2 with our drone, since it's a very capable flight controller.

A Motion mount might work well here.

Hi all,
Does anyone know if the Ronin works with a Sony EX1R and/or a Sony AX100?

You can find out to look on the size of Sony EX1R compare it to Sony FS700:

Seems like you can use it ONLY with XL arms which is not available yet .. camera too long .. and a specially problematic as huge lens at front ...

Would red pro primes work with redvolts for power and no brick? That way it can mount back to offset lens weight.

Has anyone done this?

At 13:10 in the video the operator is using the controller to pan and tilt. There is no dampening - quite a robotic start and stop - can this be feathered with precise and subtle use of the controller or ideally does the ronin software allow for ease in and out parameters to be set?

I read some of the better controllers allow for setting up of curves - I'm unfamiliar with remote controls so I`m not sure if this was referring to something that would help soften the start and stop movements of the joystick?
