  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DIT job needs a rename

I agree with Toia.
I think the title is irrelevant. And if a producer want live grading and both lto and drives for backup and live streaming dailies and a ipad with graded sellected takes, shotlists etc Well then they know they should not put the intern on that duty... Just the same when the shoot is lowfi they do not need to call in a DIT that brings a whole mobile post house.

Peronally I get more worried the more the Dit actually have to deal with. Check files and duplicate copies is enough the rest should only be done if there is time. As I think a film set is not the best location for dealing with renders etc. Also I think producers and DIT's think post facilites charge a shitiload for making proxies, syncing sound etc... well those days are far gone, we do that kind of stuff in our office for just about every other project and I think I have not charged anything for it since the mx came out...
Its simply part of the service, so send us the source and we deal with it. If your post place demands the material on a silver plate, then possibly so that its not the right place to go, lol.

+1billion-trillion.

It's not even that they charge for it, it's that they charge their regular per hour suite&labour fee, as if they do it in a grading/mixing theatre with one of their lead colourists/sound mixers, which is absolutely preposterous.

digital iphone tech

definitely in trouble

destroying imaging technology

detrimental images there

doing interesting things

DP indirectly threatening

dont ingest things

i kid i kid...

so bored, stuck on location in the middle of no where lol

HaHA, Brian weren't you fretting a couple days ago about dailies workflows and having to provide conflicting file types to the DoP and Post? Now you're bored on set? That's an awesome delta (I love it when a plan comes together).

i live on set, today is a day off. I'm in Jonesport Maine with no car, what else is there to do then regrade dailies and joke on RU? Its rural as hell lol!

Haha, I could probably think of a few ways to get into trouble in rural maine... Wait; is it a dry county?

But, yeah, I totally agree with Bjorn/Toia about the DIT position; as the cameras have become more intuitive/functional (not requiring a technician), I think the DIT should really only be concerned about dumps and proper backups... Syncing sound and prepping for editorial only if time (and workflow) permits. I know grading is where the fun/creativity comes into play, but that stuff changes and gets refined massively at the actual grade, so it's kind of wasted effort on set (in my opinion)... Plus it's usually only a one-light, not even a half decent full-on/in-depth grade...

Firstly, the DIT job needs an updated definition. Everyone seems to have their own idea of what a DIT does. To me, "digital imaging technician" suggests a person who's in charge of imaging right from planning to post-production. That is semantics of course, it doesn't matter what they're called, but at least a majority of people in the profession should agree on the job's responsibilities! Also, perhaps it is about time to drop the "digital".

Then he or she would become an "it"...
Funniest line I've read today! I needed that laugh, David.

I believe IA Local 600 would have something to say about that. I'd yield to them when it comes to job descriptions and definitions.

One thing I'm curious about is why video assist is still in Local 695. I've said for years that this should be part of the camera department, but there has been resistance to change on this idea.
