  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Discount? (If Red Dragon owner - Previous to NAB)

Jarred made loose mention that the NAB special credit may cover the cost of a 512MB mini-Mag ($2,450 on red.com).

I'll see if I can dig up the quote...

I seriously might have to, half of my Amira is financed else where though so I gotta see whats good... Also the bureaucracy involved in those things makes me doubt i could even set up financing within a week, I'm better off calling them up now or something haha....took me weeks to get it all set up with the arri... maybe my paranoia is unfounded though and its a very cheap deposit but by having an affordable plan B i at least feel confident going into NAB that i am going to walk away with something cool...if weapon is some astronomical deposit, like 5 figures ill just pay full price i guess...but I'm probably freaking out needlessly cuz i can't see them wanting to make us tie up very large sums for a non shipping camera....who knows though lol

Honestly, I'm not so optimistic, 512gb may get slashed to $2000 max and 1TB isn't going to be less than $4000 imo.

I stated this based on Jarred's comment of offering a further Weapon credit to those upgrading From Dragon to Weapon during NAB... As He mentioned this being in the form of enough credit to buy a Mini SSD which now sales for $2,450 I said it was very generous of RED to give this $2,500ish credit in addition...

Of course this is based on current Mini SSD prices... :)

Well I just bought a brand new epic dragon recently and got the confirmation from RED that once you put a deposit for a WEAPON you will get an healthy credit, enough to buy a 512gb mini mag.
 
Never mind the specs of the camera I just wish I knew the prices of the upgrades. And what the actual discount is. I guess we will find out tomorrow.

All the deets on 'discounts' are up on the red store, sorta looks like Red's doing its best to define how much our dragons are worth...
Details are:
Credit for your SCARLET/EPIC DRAGON towards a WEAPON BRAIN or package is determined by the type of BRAIN being upgraded. If the BRAIN to be upgraded is:

  • EPIC DRAGON CF and was paid for before April 13, 2015, the credit is $22,500. If on or after April 13, then $20,000.
  • EPIC-M DRAGON and was paid for before April 13, 2015, the credit is $17,500. If on or after April 13, then $15,000.
  • EPIC-X DRAGON and was paid for before April 13, 2015, the credit is $15,500. If on or after April 13, then $13,000.
  • SCARLET-X DRAGON and was paid for before April 13, 2015, the credit is $5000. If on or after April 13, then $2500.

I posted this in the Weapon section but here's what I came up with…

So at first glance the upgrade feels like a kick in the balls… Epic X Dragon to Mag Weapon $34,500 - $15,500 = $19,000 = Ouch!

But if I am doing my math correctly here's what happens…

You get the following included…

WEAPON BRAIN (Magnesium) w/ Integrated Media Bay
1 WEAPON Sidekick (Magnesium)
1 WEAPON Base Expander
1 WEAPON REDVOLT XL Module
1 WEAPON Top Handle
1 WEAPON Lemo Adaptor A
1 WEAPON Package Case
1 1-Year Standard Warranty

That's $4,795 in accessories, some of which you can sell…

Throw in the $5,000 in Red store credit…for things you will buy anyway…

So the actual brain upgrade is more like $9,205 am I right?

That looks just about right. And that's why I think they "undervalued" the trade-in values of our cameras. If they had made the trade-in values higher, it'd be hard for them to make decent profit. Makes sense but sucks thinking your Epic Dragon camera is valued at $13k.

The upgrade for Scarlet Dragon Owners is almost $30k. It's a lot of money. Is Red planing to have only Weapon on a near future? I don't know why there's not a cheaper option for Scarlet owners like a Scarlet Weapon or something like that.

Yeah, that kind of hurts. Especially since I had to scrounge up $19k just last week to upgrade from Scarlet-MX to Epic Dragon. Wired RED the money on Friday so I'd be eligible for the Weapon discounts. Now two days later I am being told that same Epic Dragon I have yet to take delivery of is now only worth $15,500 in credit towards the Weapon? And that if I want to get the $5,000 accessory credit I need to get my deposit for Weapon in by Thursday (no chance of that since I just cleaned out my account ) ?

Feels like the whole rush to Dragon by April 10th to get a Weapon discount was a scam. Considering there was no upgrade path for MX to Weapon, what were we supposed to do? So I jump onboard the upgrade train and immediately lose money? Seems I would have been better off keeping my $19k, selling my Scarlet (or hell keeping it or giving I away for free even), and just waiting to buy Weapon new.

EDIT: I had totally missed the post in other threads about the $5k accessory credit for Pre-Nab Dragon orders remaining in effect indefinitely. SOOOOO..... if I am interpreting this right, I'd essentially have a total of $20,500 in credits towards Weapon upgrades and accessories? If that is the case, then I totally regret bitching about this in public... :) So confused.
