  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dino...

Thanks Brook.
You must have had more hans on Epic time than anyone outside of RED and Mark P.

i'll catch up fast, cause i have weekends! and nights...sleep when you're dead!

Dino, Thanks for the video. I've got one question as this is the first time I have heard the Epic operating, when you hit the record button there was a whirling sound that started and stopped when you cut. What is that from and does it always happen during recording? I thought it may be the fan kicking in. I know there are options for the fan, just curious. Thanks.

yes the fan, i have not set it to go off while rolling...

Dino,

Can you do me a favour one boring thing with your new toy and post three single black frames (with lens cap on) recorded at long shutter speeds of 8s, 15s and 30s?

RAW would be great.

which compression ratio?

dino, thanks for that iphone vid! Where'd that cheeseplate come from on top of the epic? Will that F'up the heating system?

et....i talk about it in an earlier post

so jarred sent me a note last week that i would be getting the camera on friday...(where i was when i got that message is a whole story that i will not go into now).

i worked up until that day, but on that day i went to Element technica on the way to red and picked up a couple of things to make my camera "ready to rent"

the top plate is from the atom or neutron 3d rigs that ET makes...it is not cheap, i think i paid 750 bucks for it... it fits perfectly on the +13 and has 3/8's and 1/4 20 holes all over it...only problem is it locks in the redmote, which is fine for now, they said they are modifying it. but i could not wait.

then there is bottom plate that allows me to use my et 15mm and 19mm arri BP and it also has tapped out holes for mini 15mm rods (ala dslr rigs)..

for my work, i need to be able to interface with all of the gear at the rental houses. some day ill tell you all about a job i did in late november with a couple of epics where i had to severally modify things to make them work...difference of being on a low budget job versus spiderman...i had no prep, no help and i was in a foreign country with ac's that barely spoke english...so this time i wanted to be prepared.

$750 for a tiny cheeseplate???? Okay, even for ET (which I love!) that's waaaayyyy out there. What am I missing? Did magical elves on overtime hand carve it? :-)

jim said it...

Jim said Contagion would be the first fully Epic shoot, and we saw how that eventually worked out. Per his disclaimer.

"Everything is subject to change"

Except Epic M production schedule :)! Looks as though things are really tightening up for Jim and Co as they have moved away from the early days of saying whatever they were planning to announcing things very shortly before they happen. I'll definitely miss those early days as we really were able to see behind the curtains in a way we don't usually get to, but this new style definitely makes it easier to follow what is reapply going on.

tomorrow i will be going to CAMTEC to do a comprehensive test on lenses and coverage.

look for a post tomorrow night with details.

Hey Dino, don't know what you've got available there, but care to do a quick check to see if Red's 18-85 will fully cover 5K at 18mm wide open?

Dino can verify but the 18-85mm RPZ just does cover 5K 2:1 at all focal lengths. It just misses full frame at full wide (18mm). 19/20mm covers.

Remember that all focal lengths have a bit wider field of view at 5K than S35.

Jim

monumental... thanks Dino for doing this.. it will be a very valuable resource.

Dino I would love to know if 14mm and maybe even 12mm Master Primes can cover Epic.

we wiill check um all...please DO NOT come by as it is a working camera house and mondays are usually very busy with preps. most likely i will be in a private "secure" area and not in the public area, so please refrain from "dropping in".

These look amazing! Are these all in available light? Looks like it, and looks so cinematic inspite of that :D

From what I understand that is correct. And I agree, at 2000 ISO... really nice stuff.
