hey guys. lets not get crazy in here. i agree with ketch, but i also wanted to show you guys just a little something that was very cinema verite. this camera can be used either way...i would appreciate if this thread does not go into a huge discussion about posting and not posting and grading and pros and indie and blah blah blah...i will post footage that i have shot in a quick and dirty way, i actually have another short piece ready. in the future i will post professional footage from paying jobs with lots of crew and lots of gear used to make it look absolutely perfect. let's please please keep it civil. we are all friends here and more importantly we all need each-other for survival, this is a collaborative media. there is no "right" way to do this. moreover, give footage to 20 of the top colorist in the world and you will get 20 different looks. much love to mark, gibby, ketch and the boys working on the big budget features, and of course jim and crew...this tool is unreal, it will make great images out of ok composition and exposure choices, it is, in a word, progress.

yes, I think R3D files are more important for the community than a graded footage... Everybody knows that these shots are tests, so is not so important (at this time) to see a final graded version.

True...showing raw files is one thing, but also just about every cinematographer would additionally like audiences to see their craft fully "developed", in other words with a grade.

HOLLYWOOD BLVD FROM THE other side of the street - windshield still dirty -

400 megs

shot with epic #00087, 2000 asa, red 18-50 (OG one), T3 (wide open, ha ha ha), hand held while i was driving (not recommended, i am a professional).

in redcine-x. i closed it down to 500 asa, crushed the blacks slightly and put the color temp to 4000 w zero tint ( shot it as a weird color temp with tint .. still learning the camera, sorry) - trimmed the shot and then pushed out a prores 422 hq 1920 x 1080.

then i changed the asa back to 2000 and pushed out another prores...

this is not a DR test, just a " wow that looks great both ways" kind of moment...if you want a brighter scene to express brightness, go to 2000 if you want it darker...go to 500 or 320 or 200 for that matter.

i think one of the most important lessons from this shot is how easy it is to hand hold this camera and get impressive images without a 20 person crew.

I'm downloading the new Hollywood clips now but wanted to say I was really impressed by the dynamic range in the first set - it really felt like you could see everything. I thought it was awesome to see!

Hehe... I figured it's appropriate since the 1.8" module sits here, staring at me... Every day... And no idea when RED will ship me an SSD to feed it.

Anyway, thanks again for sharing your first clips. I can't wait to see what you shoot with the M over the coming weeks/months. I requested an M too, but I'm so far down the list, I'll probably see my EPIC-X first. Ha! I hope so, anyway.

Dino, kind of an odd question, but did anyone notice the EPIC while you shot the fake Iron Man guy?

I guess what I'm saying is, I think this will be amazing for stealth, guerilla shooting.

if you look closely in that video you will see two guys with an eng camera and tripod, they were eyeing me, but they kind of don't count.

i parked illegally right there on hw blvd, got out shot for 5 minutes and drove away...no one noticed or cared...it was a friday night at 9pm.

this is the ultimate cinema verite camera.

thank you all for making this past few days so enjoyable. i did not have the luxury of having people around me as it was my wife's birthday weekend and my children are so young and it was a rare 4 days off, so stealing away from time to time to work the footy in redcine-x and posting it up on my new hd5k.com site was a joy as i was able then to instantly see you guys devouring it and giving me feed back...it was like you were all here...'cept i didn't have to feed you or worry about running out of TP....so here is to reduser and not having not make target & cosco runs for more meatballs and TP.

and thanks for the kind words about my feverish boy...it gets scary. i wish i was a doctor sometimes.

very appreciative.... now i must sleep , 8am call, epic gets to go into the wild a bit tomorrow. green screen here we come!

One odd thing though... I was looking at the file A002_C003_0211V2.mov and noticed that the right hand side shifted downwards (right in the orange sign) at frame 210.. Is this just a quicktime thing, or in the Red file aswell?

This was a small bug that happened when you change frame rates on the fly without locking the frame rate in.. Dino was testing a new Alpha build for us that night... part of his Epic-M responsibilities

I think sidney crosby is very good for hockey. he is smart, he trains hard and he is tough as nails. besides that he is gifted and is a real inspiration to kids all over the world. he is growing the sport and i think that is good as hockey is one of the few team sports that you can play well into your retirement and continue to have fun. i play with many guys that are over 80 years old and have been playing for 75 of those years. you cant say that for football, soccer, basketball, baseball, just to name a few.

there is a misconception that hockey is a brutal sport...yes from the ages of about 13 to 18, if you just play in-house, high school or travel, it can be physically demanding and out right dangerous. but if you dont play college, or juniors or pro, then it is off to the non-check beer league which is just plain fun with a little bumping here and there...no one is going to run you and try and put you in the hospital.

and for the most part that is 90% of all people that play the game...

I have to agree here. I play ice hockey with a bunch of old guys. Average age on my team is 57, thankfully I'm one of the youngest ones. I didn't start playing ice hockey until my late 20's and really wish I would have started when I was a kid. Oh well. But after a few years of finding my way, I landed with an awesome team and we've held it together for nearly 8 years now.

Agreed. There's always the occasional hot-headed 18-22 year old who hasn't learned what "non-check" actually means or realized that, unlike them, most everyone else still has to get up the next morning and go to work. But by and large, our beer leagues around here are very tame and a lot of fun.
