Dino EPIC #00087 & CAMTEC 5K FF LENS CHART

hi dino, with the optimo rouge 16-42 vignetting at the wide end.

was this the optimo with a 31,1 mm image coverage or the updated one with 32mm image coverage

31,1 mm image circle

32 mm image circle

under data sheet

i will get one with 32mm image circle and want to know if its vignetting (angenieux says no vignetting with the updated version)

Yah I think everyone said that Optimo redesigned this second version effectively handle 5k. And I think Mark reported absolutely no vignetting. Maybe you tested the first version of the lens ..... ?

good question...josh????

any chance you are gonna get to test s5's, and the cooke cxx 15-40?

Yes I would love to know that as well. I'm hoping Bandpro will let Ketch test out the new Leicas soon to get images and make sure they cover 5k across ....

the leicas should be fine we had them at camtec a few weeks ago and the diameter of the rear element is quite large...think master prime..

once i get a confirmation about the optimo i will modify the chart.

and we are pretty sure that the s4's and s5's have the same size rear element diameter, unfortunately.

So is 5K FF (Full Frame) 16x9 or 2:1 ?

Should be called Full Sensor to avoid any confusion with the real Full Frame format.

Does the RED 18mm cover 5k Full Sensor?
Anyone know news on RED's 14mm?

looking at the specs on the cooke website, looks like only the panchros claim to cover the full 5k all the way through. everything else in their line, cxx, s5, s4 is all 30 mm. meaning if it vignettes at 14 mm. 18 mm and up will def cover it. Fine for any production really.

really surprised the ultraprime 8r covers the full 5k. wicked.

Thanks Dino, even so I was hoping you guys there were had an ealry MP 12mm, that is the only MP we have not tested,
and confirm that the 14mm MP works beautifully and with the MD's gives a beautiful shorted DOF at that wide.

The RPP 18mm is also beautifully wide, hopping Red does pull out 14mm or even a 12mm!!
Not really interested in a 16mm

Really too bad that the 24-290 it is not covered at the Wide end, we are buying this Zoom and wanted to cover the full 5k
at the wide end, I guess we will have to wait and see how the Adaptor Mark mentioned will work.

I am not discounting any lenses, but isn't the 15-40mm the one that everyone raves about? Focal lengths are more useful than 16-42mm, and they are also a tad faster at T2.6, instead of T2.8. Are they very different price points and about equally sharp wide open?

That would work too, FS, and if two characters fits the spot in the menu nicely then problem solved.

BTW I think Jannard said 18mm RPP does cover 5k. I look forward to hearing about the 14mm. Nothing has been said for a while unless I missed it, but it would have made quite a bit of noise (read: cheer) so I doubt I missed that.

Ohhh, nooo, don't say that Ketch! 16mm is a nice spot in my humble opinion. :)

Dino,

Our user manuals for the 16-42s all say 31.1mm. we just have to send the lenses in for the update. The update will make it work with the FF 5k, and yes the 16-42s will cover 32mm with the update. The update is a very small update, which means not a complete rehousing or anything crazy. which also means not a huge extra cost.

also thanks Cüneyt for reminding us about the update.

Since we are also looking at Sets of 16-42's for 3D, this is a great news!!

Being more on the camera side at Camtec, I don't get to mess with lenses too often, so let me tell you my Boss did know about the update I didn't. please excuse me.

Hi!

What are the sizes of all these EPIC formats in millimeters (mm)?
FF5K, 1.85 and 2.40

Thanks!
George

Does the RED 18-85mm cover 5K right out to 18mm?
Sorry if this has been confirmed elsewhere...

Just got back from checking out the Leicas. All other lenses are dead to me. ;)

All have the same image circle, all will clear of course, and I was seeing 200 lines on the corners of S35 with virtually zero CA, wide open.

Roberto,

also I still asking myself about that maybe (also not) was possible for REd to join Leica cine lens development almost five years ago (early 2007).

If you remember well I was reporting first here that Leica started (finally) development of cine lenses and also was showing a link to the Leica Cinema GmbH

a company that was registered for that sort of purpose (and now after reached that goal it is in liquidation process, of course).

And also must say that I'm still badly surprised that Epic can't get Leica-M lenses just because engineers didn't offer enough short flange distance available on Epic body design to make Leica-M mount possible.

That means no any further possibility to get Leica-M Noctilux on Epic body that will for sure give one stop of light more than any other lens available and also it is FF 35mm lens.

Leica-M lenses also are pretty lightweight and small, maybe not useful for all cine style shooting situations but could be fine for some special cine shots when camera has to be very small and lightweight and for still style shots would be just gorgeous.

Don't forget that with Noctilux super fast speed lens you wouldn't need any HDRx™ enhancement to the footage at all.

With Noctilux f/0.95 MX sensor would be able to capture more highlight and shadows than many other sensors available at any other digital cine camera system.

Thanks Dino - very awesome!

Just checking - "FF" here refers to "full S35", right?[/url]

5K FF or "Full 5k" is using the entire recordable area of the sensor. It's 1.89:1 5120x2700. 27.65mm wide, similar imager width and horizontal AOV as Canon APS-H or the 1D series SLRs. It does seem to confuse a lot of the FF35-minded photography people. But if you think beyond 35mm, "full frame" typically refers to utilizing the entire imager/sensor/film area of the camera system or targeted format. You get pretty used to that terminology if you shoot a lot of medium format digital backs since they range in size from slightly larger than FF35 to almost as large as 6x4.5 MF or other formats they are intending to shoot.
