  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DEXTER footage shot on EPIC

Yeah it's crazy! I was out there visiting family in LB this past summer and there were a lot of shows filming. Dexter, CSI:Miami, some set-ups for Sons of Anarchy etc.....

Matt, isn't Fangtasia from True Blood there as well?

I don't watch True Blood but I know they film here as well. Long Beach has a lot of different areas that can be faked as many different places and most will never know...

just glad they moved away from the f23's... man it looked really bad when still on that cam. the highlights got to be such a blobby disgusting mess sometimes. really digging the look this season. alexa and epic.
Yes. The highlights suffered a lot when they switched from film to HD cam.

To my recollection, "Dexter" was never shot on film. It started out on F900, went to F23, and since last season has been on Alexa.

I hate to say it, but having a few 2nd unit shots done on another camera doesn't mean the show is "shot" on that camera. It's really not much different than purchasing stock footage, which could have been shot on just about anything. The main unit on "Dexter", and thus about 98% of the shots in the show, are done on Alexa. That may not please people here, but it's the truth. I think it's much more meaningful and useful on a forum like RedUser to talk about shows that are actually shot using Red cameras rather than the ones that aren't, even if they happen to be shows you like. Threads about shows like Justified, Criminal Minds, Blue Bloods, Southland, and a few others have a lot more to talk about than shows like Dexter. I'm not trying to demean anyone's contribution to a show, but those are the facts.

Almost no one is saying that Dexter was entirely "shot on epic" here. I get the captain obvious thing, but mainly all the talking was about locations and seamless inter-cutting Alexa/Epic. Justin has the full right to say his Epic footage looked as good if not better than the Alexa material, despite what the evil tongues are saying out there about "eww, that Red thing".

A lot of people like Dexter and I thought would get a kick out of knowing that things you will see (even though small) in just about every episode were shot on a RED EPIC camera. I think if you think it's meaningful, you click on this thread, if not, there are plenty of other threads that are worth clicking on.

I was just happy that the 2nd unit/b-roll footage I shot for the show intercut well, and looked good. I hope that comes across in this post..

This show is such a wonderful example of the progression of camera technology. It started as an F900 show (and was pretty ugly - though I thought the garish look of the early episodes was spot on). Same goes for other showtime shows like Weeds. They've always been very digital-friendly, going F900 for just about everything they did back when HBO was still sticking to film.

Was the shot of LaGuerta out by Dexter's boat from tonight's episode shot on the Epic?

LOL! Did someone drop a tampon in your coffee?

Seriously, no one was being misleading:

They had a few days in Miami, I did a bunch of b-roll and some shots that you will see over the season.. I don't work on it regularly.. They shoot in LA.

Not as far as I know of. We didn't have her in FL. Pretty sure it was shot in LA.

Thanks Peter, I thought I was pretty clear. Not trying to mislead anyone, just trying to inform :-)
Lots of stuff I shot still hasn't showed up yet.. Looking forward to it!

Some Manhattan Beach, but the majority is here in Long Beach. I live in Belmont Shore and they shoot here all the time. I'll shoot some pics next time... By the way, CSI: Miami was shot almost entirely in Long Beach. The most recent Digital Video mag had an article on Dexter and they discussed shooting most of it in Long Beach for location work and the other 8 days per episode at Sunset Gower studios.

Cool. Wasn't old 90210 show back in the 80's shot in Long Beach or was that Manhattan beach.

Thanks for the link.

If you're talking about the original "Beverly Hills 90210," their stage base was in Van Nuys, nowhere near Long Beach, Manhattan Beach, or Beverly Hills, for that matter. Location work has always been done all over town, and often with different locations being used for the same show "location." "Dexter" uses Long Beach quite a bit, but they also use Marina Del Rey and a number of other "beach/water" locations. And the majority of the show is shot at Sunset Gower (last I heard, they did 4 in/4 out, but as with all shows, that varies based on the script). The "new" 90210" has their stage base at Manhattan Beach Studios, which has also been used for Ally McBeal, The Practice, Boston Legal, Boston Public, Medium, CSI Miami, The O.C., numerous features (Panic Room, Iron Man 1 and 2, many others), and many commercials as well.
