"If CES is a preview of the future, then give me more of this particular flavor. Dell today announces a new 32-inch, 8K desktop monitor with 1.07 billion colors, aluminum construction, 100 percent coverage of the AdobeRGB and sRGB color gamuts, and a monster $4,999 price. The UP3218K has a resolution of 7680 x 4320 (for a pixel density of 280ppi), which is as many pixels as you’d get from four 4K displays or 16 Full HD panels."

I think Dell has yet to produce an HD or 4K monitor that can even hit Rec709 out of the box. You gotta walk before you run a 4-minute mile.

I would much rather have accurate pixels than more of them.

Dell are demonstrating that they already have the Digital Electronics available to ingest and display an 8k image.

If their Analogue (display) side just needs to be sufficiently correctable / calibrateable to mitigate any out-of-the box issues - it may well hook photographers whose raw (or delivery) image is greater then 4K / 5K.

And if there is traction, Apple would likely need a 8k iMac 'response'.

It May well (finally!) get companies whose PC menus are already stupidly small in 4K to use Font sizes that are not N-Pixels ... but Proportial to the Width of the screen.

Looking forward to it. Now all we need is a HiDPI version of RCX.

This is no small feat. I've seen several 8K displays around CES and most of them are just showing stills off a USB drive. When I ask what ports/signaling standards/etc are supported the response is some version of "in development", or "this is just a prototype", etc.

Cheers - #19

Cool stuff and hats off for technological leap but 8K on a 32 inch screen seems like a waste of pixels.
At this point.

What sort of video card could drive this monitor?

Very typical for CES. A lotta stuff gets announced and turns into vaporware six months later.

The best thing I can say about this CES is that manufacturers have refined the concept of picture quality for 4K displays, and at least they're making available monitors that can provide surprisingly good performance (once they're calibrated).

Hello Marc,
What 4K monitor solution would you suggest for color work?
I was looking into the eizo cg318.

Projector would be nice or a bigger screen...

Happy new year Marc!
