  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Delivery times

Jim,

With all due respect, you are a visionary and seems to understand more about cameras than
most of the rest of the world.

You really want to tell me, that in 2011 a max runtime of about 9 minutes for a groundbreaking camera
system is not outdated ?

Plus it is honestly a bit cynical to always wave around 'that it works well for the big guys'. They have access to
a whole different infra structure than most of your customers and I am sure you are aware of that.

Just sayin'

Axel

I am currently shooting a documentary for HBO with interviews that often run several hours. Changing cards every nine minutes would not only
be logistically impossible but also ruin the flow of the interview.

Feel free to put Fincher or Sodherberg in touch with me to enlighten me how I can work around that one.

Using 8Gb cards and drives every day, no problems. My red (Enterprise) and gear are well used but also well taken cared of. It have been i all kinds of environments and (gone where no camera have gone :) continues to function perfect! Just waiting for Epic ;)

I wish I could give you more hope, but it's just the way of the Red world. They push the envelope, so everything (including delivery dates) is more subject to flux than the Other Guys™. It has its downsides but the upside is we get cinema systems that no-one else is able to compete with. We just have to adapt.

I placed my order for several 256GB SSDs in December (and am still waiting). I figured media was the one thing that could hold me up once I get my hands on Epic-X, so – knowing Red - I placed my order waaaay early to make sure I'd be as safe as possible.

Not that it's much comfort to you now, but it's the way things work when you've got a company like Red that's so far ahead of the curve.

Trevor,

Our company has two Red One's. Fantastic camera. I am lovin' them.

To get our first EVF view finder it took them about 6 months after camera delivery. The first wide angle zoom 5 months. We gave up on the 50-150 zoom after 7 months back then.
Same with the RedRam. Took so long to deliver we simply gave up.

I have a deposit sitting for a Bomb EVF right now. Last info: Backorders should be fulfilled by the end of March '10. It seems nearly impossible to get storage media (as in SSDs) within a reasonable timeframe.
So as a loyal customer I am just letting them know that these constant supply problems from day one, when Japan had no Tsunami etc., are leaving me slightly unamused and challenged in our daily operations.

That being said I appreciate that somebody like Jim Jannard actually reads customer comments and takes the time to respond to them in person. Unless he managed to clone himself. Wouldn't rule that one out.

Hey, maybe if Jim cloned himself, he could be in two places at once and help solve their supply chain issues??

Actually, probably not... Jim x2 would likely just be coming up with twice as many new ideas... :)

(I hear you... it's tough to navigate and has become a bit of a chronic problem)

Not Jim (or a clone of him) but he (and I and Jarred) have stated in a few other places that we have brought in a entirely new manufacturing and supply chain leadership team. Getting in front of orders instead of frequently having production behind demand is at the top of their list. They are not magicians who can wave a magic wand and make it all better overnight. It will take a little time for the changes their are putting in place as we speak to bear fruit for you - our customers. No one wants to not have to reply to threads like this more than me.

We are putting plans in place to get better at this. I am seeing it from where I sit. We won't ever be perfect and some things will always be out of our control - but we will indeed get better.

Thanks for the update Brent. I understand the issues behind the supply and demand and I'm quite sure you and the rest of the guys at RED aren't just sitting around doing nothing about it.

Kind of a package deal. So, as your media comes available, the module would be fulfilled at same time. If you want the module without the media or vice versa, we can accommodate, just let your rep know.

Would it follow then that if a Red One SSD Side Module was ready to ship, that media for it is ready too?

Side module info please...?

I just got my email today informing me mine is available for delivery...I ordered on 15 December ...
And I went for 2 X 64GB (that are in supply)...It is enough for most of what I do, and I will have them soon, together with the module. The reader has been here waiting to start work.
64GB in 4KHD, 16:9, RC28, 25fps is 45 min of footage...times 2= 90 mins, enough for me

And I have one 128GB on back order...

I just got my email today informing me mine is available for delivery...I ordered in January if i remember correctly...

I got mine too (ordered in early December), but there seems to be no media available for it yet.

I ordered a CF card reader and it came here super quick as a positive note. Red informed everyone when they were on there last supply of red drives and I really wanted to buy one in case something like this happened and media was worth $$$. They are super transparent about supply and its not that amazing that the newest media is in high demand. For perspective Scarlet buyers the CF media/readers seem plentiful, I got mine in less than a week when I ordered. I see CF cards and red drives for sale on ebay or craigslist sometimes if you dont want to rent I suggest scoring used stuff while you wait. Drives have that long capacity if CF cards cant deal with your logisitical issues

I gotta say, I'm pretty nervous that there won't be any SSD media available to buy when my Stage 2 Epic ships.

I was anticipating that we would have some clue as to what the Stage 2 package includes, and what the cost differential would be (if any) at NAB, but that didn't happen. Now I don't know what to think/expect and I haven't heard anything on our Epic-M inquiry either. So our "solution" – spend $58K now to get a working camera with SSD media and EVF – doesn't look like it's even an option for us, even though we have the $$$.

This too shall pass, I'm sure, and I'm feeling depressed overall today anyway, but... *sigh*. :(

I don't complain much, but this stuff does drive me a little crazy. I got the email today that my side SSD module is ready! Woo hoo! I was very excited until I read closer and realized that I'd be receiving a really fancy doorstop until I have some media to put into it. Sigh. So, my rep has offered me 64gb's but with no information on when my 128's will be ready. So...I'm supposed to plunk down a couple thousand dollars on 64's and the 128's I ordered many months ago may ship NEXT WEEK? No idea. Without good information, it's VERY HARD to make informed decisions and be a good businessman. I'm sure Jim and lots of other business people understand this dilemma.

Matter of fact, I wonder if RED has vendors that work like this. Think RED has put money down years in advance for parts for future cameras without any idea of shipping dates for those parts or what they'll actually receive for their money? Perhaps they do...interesting to think about.

I sure hope we come out of the woods on this stuff soon. I really, truly want to be a big fan of RED's business practices as well as their equipment & service.

For now...any thoughts? Should I spend $2000 on 64's that may barely get used if the 128's come in in the next few weeks?

Obviously, it's totally up to you, Kevin.

However, I was presented the same scenario, and I decided not to buy the 64GB drives. We tend to shoot a lot of interview work, and for that reason I would rather wait for the 256GB drives ... or at very least 128GB drives. For me, it's a better long-term investment.

Beyond that, as a Stage 3.5 owner, I might have been a fool to even have them ship a side module for a camera that might need to be sent back to Red later this year. However, I went ahead and had it sent anyway. :)

I am willing to roll the dice on the side module, but I will keep it new in the box until I have more information.

Perhaps the 256GB drives will become available fairly soon.
Perhaps Stage 3.5 owners will be given a financial incentive to keep their R1s and my purchase of this Red One Side SSD Module will be a good idea after all.
Perhaps I should have my head checked. :smile5:

Right now, I am sitting in a hospital room with my finacee to start off Easter weekend. I can tell you that in the grand scheme of things this backorder stuff doesn't really rank that high on the (to use someone else's words) suckitude scale.

Thanks for the thoughts Peter and I sure hope your weekend gets better and your fiancee is okay.

Why do you mention "sending back the SSD later this year?" Like you, I'm leaning towards waiting because we also do a ton of longer form interviews. I may get 1 64gb SSD just to have for lightweight stuff we do for now. But it is frustrating if we get the 128's soon.

Thanks!

Kevin
