Jeremy,

Rep has your email we are getting part numbers in place so we can get things setup for customers who want to take advantage of the program.

Still no response from my Bomb Squad rep...

It is $8500 net. Meaning $9500 less a $1000 early adopter credit at time of invoice. Cash, not accessory credit : )
Nope, no deadline on that.
Thanks Brent.
Now I can relax.

Yes Michael, once my post was seen the call happened very fast! Thanks. Looking forward to spending more money with Red.

What about heat dissipation? Carbon Fiber VS Aluminum.

Seems like the standards will run cooler?

Any thoughts anyone?

Ok.. here are the details for the Carbon Fiber Upgrade...

Carbon Fiber Upgrades at this time can only be done when your camera is in for the Epic M-X to Dragon sensor upgrade.

Price is $19,750 for the upgrade to take your Aluminum Dragon and upgrade it to a Magnesium and Carbon Dragon. Doesn't matter if you are Epic M or X , as the upgrade pretty replaces almost everything in your existing camera. That price is on top of your Sensor Upgrade.

This includes the upgrade to Magnesium / Carbon Fiber Brain, Replacement to a new Carbon Fiber Side SSD ( either mini or normal ) , and replacement of your Ti PL mount to the new Magnesium PL Mount.

This is not going to be a normal process you can buy through the store.. you need to ask for this through your Bombsquad Rep either in advance ( i.e. now ) or right before you send you camera in for the upgrade. The only exception to that is the guys out there that have received their sensor upgrades already or have them in our shop for upgrade as we speak.

So lets try this out... I don't think this option will last for long. If this upgrade ends up choking out our Carbon line we will need to kill it. It takes A LONG time to machine and make the Carbon Fiber panels for each Dragon Carbon camera so please don't be upset if this option vanishes unexpectedly.

Damn. My new rep is awesome. He got back to me within 24 hours.

Ask for Clark if your rep is lagging. We only want the best in our BS department!

I think mentioned elsewhere, but, yes, a lot of internal mechanicals, mounting points, and configurations had to be altered between aluminum and carbon fiber to account for heat dissipation. Hence, cannot just slap carbon fiber panels on the chassis for aluminum : )

Well, while I think Clark is fantastic as well, have to also call out the entire team. No rep was "lagging" yesterday. Please think bigger picture - we posted a lot of info hours after the reps went home, they arrived to work with a pile of emails and voicemails. We announced the program and there are some logistics that had to happen to even be able to take orders for the carbon fiber upgrade program that required cross-departmental organization and process flow documentation. As Michael noted in his reply to Jeremy...

So, what does this all mean? Give your rep a break. And the other reps, too : ) I respectfully ask that you guys refrain from knee-jerk comments that while they may make one rep look good, it is at the expense of others who work just as hard, who are just as dedicated. Every rep on that team IS the best of the best. It serves no purpose to have people jumping from rep to rep to rep....

Ok, don't want this thread hijacked. If anyone would like to discuss further, feel free to send a PM :)

I appreciate the dedication of your team Brent. Happy holidays to the staff and please take some time off to recuperate. As important as making pretty pictures may seem, in the big scheme of things, family and friends take precedence.

How would this upgrade work if you don't have a PL mount? AFAIK, there is no EF Magnesium mount, right?

Just wondering if the new Carbon Dragons will have/come with the Carbon Mini SSD module??

When that is available, yes.

Carbon fiber body and side SSD Module and the Mg PL mount are a package deal. So, need what we are receiving to be Ti PL. If you want to upgrade without sending in the Ti PL mount, you will essentially have to buy a Ti PL cuz you are going to be getting a Mg PL back : )

These are production cards with beta firmware builds. These cards have 3 "banks" of processing and we develop to each bank. Right now only 1/3 the card is turned on, hence users should expect full quality 6K is running at realtime ( 24-30fps) . We just finished the firmware update that has turned on the second third and it's running at 65fps in the labs. Current owners should see that build become public beta around January 8th.
Which is the best way to use the rocketx? Obviously internally is out with the new Mac Pro...external TB boxes? Does it need TB2? What performance can be expected with TB? Which external boxes work or are necessary ?

I would love to know the answers to this question as well!

Unfortunately it's not an answer many of you want to hear, but the best way to use a Rocket-X, by far, is inside a PC ( or an old mac tower ). There is no question about it. Thunderbolt 2 will help out alot.... TB2 and Rocket-X is going to be a great combination, but TB2 its nowhere near fast enough to harness the FULL power of the Rocket-X card. And I say that with love typing on a Mac.

Don't get me wrong... the "trashcan" mac pro is a feat of engineering... and I am glad Apple mixed things up a bit with a device that will probably be just fine for most. If you are a Final Cut guy ( the latest version is pretty great ) then you pretty much have no choice. I am confident the new Mac Pro is going to be incredibly successful.

Apple by far has a superior operating system. I don't think anyone could ever argue that that has spent alot of time on both. But you currently can build or buy a dual CPU 24 core PC with 7 slots of full PCI-E slot goodness that will blow the lid off of any Apple.

From a raw power perspective.. the PC is going to win every time if configured upwards. Twice as many CPUs, Twice as many possible video cards, 4X as much maximum ( and faster ) memory , all of that and a more frequent and easier path for upgrades.

The new mac pro is of course more portable than almost any workstation PC.. Guys that spend alot of time on set I can see the trashcan being incredibly attractive. Those big old Mac Pros seem to get heavier and heaver every year that goes by, so one could build a pretty killer cart with the new mac pro, an external thunderbolt housing, external storage etc and be much more portable.

I have a feeling someone will come along with a case that houses the trashcan and a bunch of space for drives and extra PCI-E slots cabled through thunderbolt internally.. kinda like Sonnet Tech did with the bad ass 1U rack expander for the Mac Mini. That would be pretty cool...

Personally.. I have gone from Mac to PC to Mac to PC to Mac and back again over the last year or so... and landed on a great ( for me ) hybrid approach.

When I need to do heavy lifting.. actual work... I use a PC. It is just so, so much faster and I really love it. When I do everything else, I use a mac laptop... and I love that.

I use Adobe programs for pretty much everything and switching between the mac and pc versions is pretty much transparent. The pain in the ass for some Adobe Creative Cloud is actually incredibly great for this. It allows you to sync fonts (soon)and settings across mac and pc painlessly. And Resolve is pretty much the same as well, although running Linux on a PC probably takes the win if Resolve is where you spend your life.

For the PC users, things will really be great next month when Intel announces the new E7 Xeons... 15 cores each processor with new motherboards that can take up to 8 of those CPUs on and real USB 3.0 and yes, even thunderbolt 2.

At the end of the day... data is getting bigger and bigger.. there are going to be more and more pixels with more and more processing. We still need " trucks " to do the heavy lifting. RED doesn't plan on slowing down anytime soon. And it's just not us.. almost every other camera company has quadrupled their pixels over the last year or so... and its just going to continue.

What mac based DITs have feared all along since the announcement of the new form factor is true ^ regarding the Mac Pro. Its mobile which is cool, but at the expense of power and pci expandability I am not sure if its worth it. The GPU standard may very well never catch on, Apple has found a new way to drive away GPUs, just when things were starting to improve for Mac. So the way I see it is the apple machine is great for portability, but long term I just don't know if I should go for it. If the E7s really do ship with many integrated core technology in 2 months, and if NLE software is then re codeded for many cores, then its like the Mac Pros that wont arrive til Feb will already be at a disadvantage (or rather another disadvantage). I like the old clunker tower form factor...I think I just need to build a hackintosh, that might be my best solution.

.... hmmmm. that hurts.

It doesn't need to. If you are set on Mac.. then stick with it. Get a TB2 enclosure and by happy with it. The question was just the absolute fastest way to use the Rocket-X card and there is only one answer. For simple editing.. the Mac Pro trashcan ( the 12 core one ) and TB2 Enclosure with a Rocket-X card should still be able to at least get you to realtime playback for 5K R3Ds.

And Final Cut has a great feature to let you invisibly render in the background if you have the time for 6K footage. Final Cut has been tweaked to really take advantage of the dual GPU's and from my short time playing with it is pretty impressive.

Just do yourself a favor and skip the 4 core version and go straight to the 8 core or 12 core with as much memory as you can afford.
