Woo-hooh - now that's what I'm talking about! Amazingly generous offer RED! And beautiful new specs!

And: I told ya! :) I was so damn sure RED would pull off this excact thing - I knew I knew how RED thinks by now...

I don't think it's too harsh at all. In fact, I hope and pray that Jim never offers another free thing or "upgrade path" ever again, because it's corrupting the culture here and spurring this disgraceful behavior, in spite of Jim honorable intentions. You give an inch, they take a mile.

I have piles of old electronics and cameras all over my house. Not a single one of them is upgradeable. Not a single one can be redeemed for its full value toward a newer model.

Jim should have offered the $5K chip upgrade, the $17K trade in, and a ticket to get in line early for the first new units, and left it at that. Anyone who bitched should have been shown the door.
disagreed.. your tone in these two last posts is everything you want other than friendly.. harsh twice. (gavin is right)

It just keeps getting better...thanks RED!

The new specs rock, the prices are outstanding, and the upgrade paths/trade-in options are stunning.

As someone who has been aboard the RED train since day one of the company please accept my heartfelt "Thanks!"!

I'm not a fanboy - I'm just an experienced and appreciative longtime professional, who clearly realizes what a exponential change RED is making in the media production industry.

I got to this thread late, but I paid my dues, speed reading the nearly 800 posts prior to this one. I'll add my thanks to those who expressed their gratitude for RED's new products and generosity. Reference the blatant noisemakers on this thread - well, I guess "common sense" really isn't all that common. Maybe it should be renamed "uncommon sense"

Thanks again RED. You have my full professional support - as you have from the beginning. Thanks for all the long hours RED Team members...you're my heroes for sure...

Get those new cameras in my hands and I'll be way happy to go out and generate some breathtaking images - while the pseudo-techie quibblers endlessly pontificate ad naseum over minutae.

RED One seriously rocks - I've had unreal fun with mine. I'll now point towards also hitting the streets and fields with the DSMC line!

You guys are kickin' ass and takin' names...I'm proud of ya...

I would have been okay with that too. But looks like Jim knows there are some good customers here who have been with him all the way, and I think he's decided to go out of his way to thank them, even amongst the noise of those who might not appreciate what he is offering.

This all started with the 110% refund for those who put money down early on a Red One and changed their mind. He followed that up with the $2500 credit towards accessories. That was huge. Then the firmware upgrades. The cutting in line at NAB to see Crossing the Line, and now this upgrade path. I understand some people still have an axe to grind with Jim over delivery dates, camera problems, post workflow, etc. but you have to look at the big picture here. Look at what they have done. Even with some of the early bumps in the road, this is still an amazing cost/value deal. Even if you have spent $40K on your rig, you are still getting a camera that has potential (in the right hands) to kick the butt of any camera in that price range and perhaps most cameras with higher price tags.

I'm perplexed at some of the response tonight.

Wow, it got quiet in here all of a sudden...

Anyway, since there's now REDCODE RGB on the horizon for FF1080p and potentially other uses as well. What are the chances of seeing REDCODE RGB as an editing / working / delivery codec?

Tom..have you done the math of being a R1 owner, upgrading the sensor then trading in for the FF35....versus trading in for the Epic X and then buying outright the FF35...tell me you have or are you just letting off steam!!
Dave,

ps: that goes for anyone else taking a swing.

I really don't have time to read all 82 pages before I post. If this question has been asked before please forgive me and please steer me to the right answer.

How do you define "existing RED ONE owners"? If I buy a RED One camera next March, do I still qualify to upgrade to an EPIC X package?

Thanks.

I think it all comes down to the fact that we're in the business of pictures, and they get that. They're providing a tool that is strong, innovational, and well designed. OH NO... are they providing ANOTHER tool that is... strong, innovational, and well designed?

While we are all in a business, or own our businesses, we are not all the kind of business people who understand what sleepless nights of design mean on REDs timetable...

Jim and RED Co. have already spent what would equate to well over the duration of three or more major feature films, from beginning to end, to make this become a reality for us all. We can all relate to that on some level, can we not? November 13th and December 3rd should be milestones, RED Letter Days, hell... industry holidays. That's not fanboy babble, that's appreciation for something that we've all invested in - owner or not. If you're on this site and not just trolling, you've got something in this.

Try and imagine where we would be right now if none of this had happened... if RED had never even been mentioned publicly. Sure we would have some great options for acquisition, but it's quite clear that many of the people who are current or future owners, myself included, would quite possibly not have had the options we do now because of RED.

If a stranger said to me some of the things you guys were saying to RED, my respect for them would go out the window. If a friend said some of the same things, I'd let them cool down and talk to them in a few days. Give RED a break. We all want things we can't have. I know for some of you who are frustrated, your frustration represents an investment that cannot be recouped. Consider showing some appreciation, regardless... these guys (and gals) are busting their asses for you around the clock.

Jim... Jarred... RED Co... tell me you had and will have time for the holidays? :)

Thanks for all of your great offers. I'm in for the EPIC-X S35 Private Reserve package!

These specs are much more transparent, thanks!

Scarlet FF35 query....

Scarlet FF35 query....

So the FF35 Scarlet is not listed as having Anamorphic capabilities, yet the Epic brand does, however the sensor sizes are the same. All things being equal, one would assume you can use Anamorphic glass on Scarlet. Does this mean that only the Epic model will allow you to view an unsqeezed image? Or am I missing something.

DSMC - What about AF?

DSMC - What about AF?

One spec that I have missed and that isn't mentioned so frequently is the auto-focus. While many forum users seem to argue that the DSMC are perfect for sports/action and can replace traditional DSLR's there, I believe it'll be hard without fast and accurate AF. Scripted filming is a different matter and I am with those who believe that AF is unneccesary for that.

Will the EPIC-Scarlet have any provision for AF at all? How do the mounts work?

I've heard of some people using certain Anamorphic lenses on R1s. I would imagine that even though a Scarlet can't unsqueeze an image in camera it wouldn't be hard to make an LCD that would do it for you for monitoring purposes and to take care of unsqueezing the actual image in post. There are a few workarounds when compared to the ease of anamorphic in Epic. But I don't know how this feature on the Epic is a huge selling point over the Scarlet (of course there are many reasons why an Epic is far superior to the Scarlet aside from this one)

As per the specifications sheet released, all the new RED electronic lenses announced have auto focus capability, and all but one of them also have image stabilization. If you read the spec sheet for mounts, it also states that the the camera mounts will have "power and intelligent lens data interfaces". Bottom line: yes - the DSMC line will feature auto focus for stills shooting. With Jim Jannard being a longtime professional stills photographer, my guess is that the auto focus on the DSMC line will be very fast and accurate.

Hope this helps...
