  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Day rate for scarlet-w

Just call is the WEAPON S35

i think people will react when they see $800 for a weapon vrs $350 for a scarlet-w
so you are just talking about the body right?
because i dont know any production that looks at just the body price, its all the support needed for the production.
if 400 dollars is going to make or break production on a camera rental then i wouldnt be doing that job, or i would ask the rental company do do the job with what production has, or we go somewhere that will.

They will not notice that the scarlet w can do 4:1 5kFF or 100fps @4.5kFF because of the grey color.

No one cares about this. No one except the DP, on a commercial or a music video, when they hire a DP, he/she then provides the producing team with equipment list he'd like to work with. DPs usually try to squeeze the very best out of producers, I don't know a single one who would specifically opt for Scarlet-W when they can have a Weapon. Or Alexa Mini. Or Alexa SXT. People here tend to forget that there is that other company out there that basically dominates the rental market and started doing it even more since they released a smaller version of their hit camera.

Scarlet-W is not a rental camera, it may happen occasionally, but please guys, don't be delusional that you will build a business renting this camera out. A nice bonus to your own gigs/more high-end cameras in your arsenal, that is what it is.

+1
exactly

i agree which is why I am sticking with the Raven and will eventually move up to the Weapon.

i make deals all the time, but the camera packages usally go out with batteries media and display and mattebox/followfocus. typically i am open to 3-day week rentals for indies

exactly, so me as the dp, if i said i need a weapon, no production or rental house is going to deny me that and say for a few hundred bucks less i can give you a scarlet, because if they did i would say no.

most established rental houses the price is the price. I know a few people who are asking for $800 + for weapons

what im saying is. when i go to a client and say ok, so the equipment costs $800 a day for camera A, or $400 for camera B for your lower budget project. I think many will appreciate the savings

also i see DP's get told no on equipment ALLLLLL the time.

I actually talked to Abel recently and they were leaning towards $1800 for a CF Weapon.

Deleted. Accidental double post.

there ya go. So like i said originally. I noramly shoot 6k dragon.. if i was gonna ask for a rate as my b-cam or swap out the dragon 6k for scarlet-w 5k. what would that price be hehe

No one said DPs always get what they want, but we were saying that what they want is usually not a Scarlet-W level of camera for an A-cam.

Maybe it's just my twisted reality but all the DP's I worked with usually ask for a top tier camera with a top tier glass or rare expensive anamorphics.

I can appreciate that. And obviously in a perfect world we get what we want. however, I think its an easier sale for a feature with budget of 200-500k to rent the best they can get for their budget. last feature we did with 2 dragons and kowa anamorphics. next one we have planed will incorporate the weapon b cam will either be an epic dragon or the scarlet-w, leaning to the scarlet-w for many reasons, one being price for a second unit while keeping the added benifits of the DSMC2

Isn't the Scarlet Dragon compression @ 5K 24fps = 8 to 1?

Scarlet-Weapon @5K 24fps = 4 to 1.

That is a massive difference in quality and definitely puts the S-Weapon in a different league than S-Dragon. S-W owners will just have to communicate that. Yeah, it's probably not much of a stand alone rental, but is a great camera to owner / operate.

Maybe just call it and list it in your gear section as Scarlet-Weapon. Say it enough time, and it will just be known as that :001_rolleyes:

Everyone is bickering like a bunch of teenagers.

By the way, the camera is called Scarlet-W, not Scarlet Weapon.

Raven and Scarlet-W are aimed towards owner/operators, not rentals.

In terms of owning a rental house, typically you should only be interested in the BEST cameras as that is what is demanded by your customers and generate the most income.

Owners/Operators with a Raven or Scarlet-W should have no issues with getting solid day rates, unless your terrible at what you do, in which case you won't get any work regardless.

All the DSMC2 bodies are going to be solid. The only thing that truly matters is what you can do with them. Just my .02 cents.

im charging 1000 a day right now as my raven as a B camera, but that is with me as the dp and with a weapon as A camera that's 2500 a day, but these are fully kitted out packages, sticks, heads, media, onboards, follow focuses, filters, batteries etc.(minus lensing) Production is very happy for two cameras at this price.
i never understood how you can determine just a body only price since it takes so much more to use a camera in a professional production environment.
so i think that is the key, obviously you can charge whatever you want if you are the dp, but if you put a nice shooting pkg together that you have to rent all together then you can charge more.

I was always quoting day rates by what the rental houses quote. Anyone else?

Hi Jordan,

Is $1000 your lower end rate? You have more experience and work on bigger network and commercial projects than many of us on here. Is there a different rate for jobs in the higher commercial tier? Even at $2500 a day with two cameras, seems low for the type of jobs you do.

just a FYI i am seeing ads for the Scarlet W for 300-350 in The LA market ( they are offering camera, media, betteries, Matte Box)
