  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DaVinci

Now 70k is the "list-price" that floats around for Scratch with all the bells and whistles. But you might not need all the modules. I didn't.

And from what I've seen in the past I think I'll be faster grading a typical project on Scratch than DaVinci. DaVinci has a bigger toolset though so for certain projects that need that depth it could work out very well.

I'm just saying: the purchase price shouldn't be considered the only factor in these things. And you should probably try a trial version of Resolve before you consider it. It wouldn't be my interface of choice. I didn't like Color either - even when it's free.

Oh and how is the compatibility of the DaVinci control surface with other software? If it's limited to Resolve than it might as well be software ;-)

its quite funny to see people throw their toys out of the cradle because the baby next door can now afford the same toys , boohoo. being a perfectionist about your work is one thing but wanting software and gear to stay expensive so you don't have to compete is just backwards.

innovation wont stop , will never slow down and eventually will allow those who can Do. the reason half the people are even on this forum is a company came along with a different mentality and decided that more people should have access to high end gear than was possible before.

people railed against companies who kept their prices out of the reach of anyone who wasn't daddy warbucks. but to then turn around and spout the same crap you were railing against when you have to compete with so called hobbyists is just that. if you are a great colorist you have nothing to worry about. no you wont be able to charge for the 200k suite anymore. but then its not costing you that to keep one anymore. you'll still get your rate.

lets keep elitism were it belongs in the doing of your job. not the size of your pocketbook

Of course I do.. that's why i'll have the best tools for my Davinci Resolve. You see the entire point is now that I can enter the game comfortable... 50k is no problem for a 4k solution and it's fun to start playing at $995. Before I could have gotten Scratch at 70k but that's mostly software... I didn't think that would be a wise move. It seems too risky to me just for software, now I feel a lot more secure going the Davinci route. 30k in hardware and around 20k in software... I can hack that.

Andre, did you make it to NAB? Champe Barton and I were there and you came up in conversation. We've got to get a S.FL RED group going. Anyway, we returned several times to the BMD booth to revisit the Resolve demo... It truly is impressive. The only drawback, and it's only an issue if you don't have some sort of finishing system, is that, if my memory serves me correctly, it only outputs DPX. Apparently there's a lot of requests for QT, especially ProRes, so that's in the works for the near future. Also, RED Rocket™ adds no performance boost to RED cc; something they hope to change in the future.

Huh... what are you on? Who's throwing away what? I think you're responding to a completely different discussion than is being held here.

It was suggested in the beginning of the thread that with Resolve now being priced so aggressively there wouldn't be any place for higher priced systems. And then some of us suggested that for many posthouses the software price is only a small part of the equation and that support and other factors play a role in the decision to go with one solution over the other. Just like even with RED there's still a market for high end Sony's, Arri's and Aaton.

The only reason I referred to hobbyism is that I can fully understand that in those cases the price point is the definitive factor in the purchase decision since there isn't much of a business strategy for recouping the cost.

it wasn't directed at a particular person. just a specific attitude on these boards. I'd like to get information on these boards not all the other crap that comes with it. just honest , fact based information

Perhaps instead of characterizing this democratization as a 'race to the bottom' we can look at it as an overdue 'market correction' (much like what RED did with the R1 & RPPs) It seems DaVinci has realized that many DIY filmmakers are grading there own projects on home systems using another $1k system (namely Apple Color).

Just to kinda rehash what Mike was talking about earlier, This is a business decision made by a smart business man from Blackmagic. Maybe he is like Jim and just wants to see change in the market but like Jim, he's a business man and sees an opportunity to capitalize. Look at the times we live, the economy, etc. It all makes for a risky but probably wise business move and as much as you or anyone else here wants to think this is being done out of the kindness of one mans bleeding heart to "democratize" the Color Grading business, just remember, this is a business.
I agree that there is a large market that is the "independent film scene" ie 200k or less crowd right now and if you can capitalize here, great!
But, going back to my original point, I still think there is going to be a place where directors, producers and DP's feel comfortable to take their projects and most likely it isn't going to be your bedroom. Bruce helped me make my point by pointing out a workflow that eventually ends up in a facility that can do the proper finish for its desired target. I guess where we are headed is a lot of small films that are being created and finished with less than desirable results. Let the good enough revolution officially begin!

@Bing Bailey: Well, I thought that's what we were trying to do here: bring information.

Building a serious (in terms of quality and reliability - not necessarily $) postproduction studio requires much more than just the purchase cost of the system.

Some things that need to be taken into account:

Monitoring. Are you grading for TV or for film-out? In the latter case you really want a projector calibrated to 14ftl. No snobbism there, just making sure what you're seeing will end up matching the cinema experience.

Support. What happens if something breaks or needs to be replaced, under pressure? You're on a deadline and the motherboard breaks. Who are you gonna call?

Anyway, some of us (most notably M Most) thought to put the low entrance price of DaVinci in some perspective. But it's obviously being interpreted as dishonest elitist snobbism by some so never mind...

:attention9ha: Agreed!

Switch over to the other cheap Mac Pro that you have on stand by for such scenarios.

Thanks for the info Ben... I wish I could have been there. Yes we definitely need to get a South Florida REDuser group going... I think Egon was trying to have something like that but not much organizing as far as getting the word out. Does the Resolve work with RED Rocket in anyway?

Can Resolve use RED Rocket™™™ to transcode to DPX files?

Nope, Resolve does nothing w/the RED Rocket. Every RED user probably asked the same question because the demo artist quickly answered they're working on it.

Ben, is the DaVinci (mac) a thumbs up purchase?

Hey, let's just say I called my company's owner Monday from the show floor for a chat :hurray: Presently, we've got more pressing things needed, but the price point makes it extremely appealing to have in your arsenal. While you can run it w/o the panels, I can't see a colorist waccoming or mousin' it. Me, one of the smaller Tangent Wave's would do the trick. I look forward to chatting w/our colorist in Atlanta to get his take on things, but really I don't see a down side.

Lot of interesting things had been said here from the first post. For a small indie post-house like mine, a 995$ Resolve is a game changer in many ways. I'm already working with talents (colorists, workflow people). For 50k$, I can afford a brand new cinetal or Barco and a terrific projector for 2K screening. With a mac pro, a 4800 nvidia, a La Cie raid system and a CP200, I have no doubt I can run a 2K DPX sequence realtime (I already do that on my Smoke system). This investment is made 90% on reliable hardware. I tested Luster Stereo and Scratch recently, running on a single GPU card. Both systems were able do real time grade 2K with many secondaries and masks. I guess it will be the case with Resolve. From what I read on the Resolve Manual yesterday, the system is pretty close to systems like Luster rather than Color. It could be a real opportunity for the colorists I work with to do their job in an excellent grading room and express themselves. 5 days ago, it was impossible for me to invest 400 K$ in the same grading room. Period.

Agreed the software has a pretty good run to maturity. Task for task, it pretty will handle any industrial level project. Was there any word on a release date?
