  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DAVINCI RESOLVE and ***HACKINTOSH***

Thanks for your patience Anders, but i am very very busy..
Tonight I finished a Hackintosh with Davinci resolve 8.1 and Lion 10.7.1, I made some screenshots.

Asus p6t7 Supercomputer whit "MACHETE"
CPU : 990x 6 core
24gb ram ddr3
2 Redrocket
3 gtx 480 watercooled
1 blackmagic multibridge
1 atto raid card

i test hdrx 5K 24p/48 whit davinci :
At half debayer go to 23-24 fps
At full debayer go to 9-10 fps

I could not test much but kept safely with many nodes blur and denoise.
The system is compact and very nice performance.
This post is just for info.

Just finished the system luigi mentioned....
I haven't done water-cooling before, but in the end it all worked out.

The large radiator sits on top of the machine.

It Currently has: i7 990x, 3 x GTX480 1.5GB, 2 x red rocket, a blackmagic multi bridge and a atto cerlarty FC-82EN. 24GB ram and 10GB raid0.

Only missing piece right now is the top cover which needs holes for the tubes.

Rock solid and what performance :-)

1000 thanks to luigi for the support and hard work!

Great beast!

I want to build my own, here the specs:

i7 970
ASUS P6T7
12GB (3x4gb) RAM
SSD 120GB
4TB (2x2TB) HDDs in software RAID0
2xGTX 480
Decklink 3D

I'll later upgrade at 24gb ram, 8tb hdd and 4 gtx 480.

You advice to buy the components on a specific online store or someone here where I live?

To be sure that I can upgrade to a configuration similar to the Anders' one, on what I've to pay attention?

For example, i though to buy the two standard gtx 480 with air cooling, and when I'll buy the other two, buy the liquid cooling system.

A few notes:
- I couldn't get the evga cards so I went for the MCI version 1.5GB. Seems to work fine, but we had some issues during the installer. (Luigi will need to fill in here)
- Water cooling is only to use all available slots. Modifying all three cards was a real hassle. A little surprised I didn't f... this up. Drilled 3 screws on the fan cooler because they were stuck. Just wait until you need the slots and do the big mod.
- You might want a FW800 controller card as well, as there is none on the MB, and the FW400 port does not work. The esata and internal SAS doesn't work either.
- I have been running this for a week now and just got my MetaSAN up and running this friday. really amazing performance for the price.

I can't find the MCI one... there is a machete compatibility list or something to avoid completely?

My slot configuration will be:

1 - Decklink 3D
2 - HDMI ports
3 - GTX 480
4 - blocked
5 - GTX 480
6 - blocked
7 - FW800 Controller

the 6 SATA ports will be used this way:
1: SSD 120GB
2-3: 2x2TB RAID0 Software
4-5-6: Free

I was thinking about converting the two or three free SATA ports to eSATA through cables or front panel mod with these:

what about it?

And can I use the blocked PCI Slots to temporally add some interfaces?
For example use the last slot for something else and place the FW800 controller somewhere else with the cables easily accessible from the front panel using this:

Note that without a rocket card you will not get good r3d performance....this is only a single CPU system, so it misses the brute force of the dual CPUs.

I know, but here there are a lot of project shot on DSLR or other cameras and the few that are shot with the RED ONE are also 3D... One RedRocket now isn't good for both cases. I'm waiting for a major diffusion of EPIC and SCARLET to buy a RedRocket or maybe two ;)
So I prefer starting with a working DaVinci workstation for non-RED project and then upgrade when I have more money ;)

Unfortunately, Anders can't reply because he's been banned. He told me to say that he meant MSI and not MCI ;-)

Coming soon for os.x

Try the new compiler!
* New LLVMbased compiler delivers up to 10% faster performance for many applications

New & Improved "drop-in" acceleration with GPUAccelerated Libraries
* Over 1000 new image processing functions in the NPP library
* New cuSPARSE tri-diagonal solver up to 10x faster than MKL on a 6 core CPU
* New support in cuRAND for MRG32k3a and Mersenne Twister (MTGP11213)
RNG algorithms
* Bessel functions now supported in the CUDA standard Math library
* Up to 2x faster sparse matrix vector multiply using ELL hybrid format

ciao luigi,

would u recommend using resolve to color dailies?

Hey Luigi,

How are you getting OSX to see 2 red rockets? If you're using DSDT injection, which properties do you need to manually inject?

I've created a very successful machine now based off of your build but need to add a 2nd rocket for a 3D shoot.

ciao Man;
works without problems without dsdt 1 or 2 or 3 redrocket ;)

Luigi, have you tried a Thunderbolt motherboard? If this has been covered before, I apologize.
Thanks!

umm i like this board:) ASUS Rampage IV Extreme whit socket 2011

but only 6 pcie.... and no thunderbolt ;(

@luigi,

6 PCIe sockets, but 40 lanes --- ahhhh!
