That's an unfriendly, jerk's response. How is being unpleasant with people helping you out in your career so far? I phoned a friend who is a colorist and he informed me that you can add an alpha input to a grade, connect the matte triangle to it, and get alpha-based layering in the timeline. It has nothing to do with transfer modes like "overlay", which si why I couldn't figure it out, and is new since 8.1. That took me about 2 minutes to write. I like to be helpful.
Not intended to be unfriendly, or jerkish. I learned a lot reading the 8.2 manual. I highly recommend it for other novices like myself reading along the thread. Someone may find the link useful!
That said, I'm glad you found the answer to your specific question. Resolve has many ways to skin a cat, but I discovered a similar method of setting up a node tree that mixes 2 inputs using qualifiers and a layer mixer (p.215). Maybe not exact to what you were looking for, so apologies for my brevity.
I don't have colorist friends so I have to spend the time reading up on these things and pressing buttons until something breaks, but not everyone has the time to do that. No hard feelings, I hope.
