Since there seems to be some editing and deletion of threads happening today in regards to Blackmagic Design and their new "product", I would like to focus on Resolve 9.0, since that is VERY relevant to RED cameras and worth discussing. I can't be there in Vegas this year, so I'm trying to get as much hands-on info from those who are attending as to what their first impressions are of this new version.

PLEASE, let's keep this to just Resolve. I'm going to be frustrated if this turns into camera talk and gets deleted by the mods. I simply want to know what people have been able to see today and start a conversation about it.

Thanks guys!

Ok I'll go, I'm on set now so can't really search around, anyone care to give a quick list of new features.

New user interface improvements include a new streamlined project import, export and selection workflow, scrubbable media thumbnails to speed up shot selection, production metadata fields for entering on set shot notes and larger color control palettes to give faster access to grading tools. There are new clear graphical palettes for control of power windows, keys, sizing, tracking and stabilization, camera raw and data burn ins. The Gallery now includes resizable stills displayed in user named albums and 48 "prebuilt looks" for fast grade selection.

While DaVinci Resolve is used on more feature films than any other color correction system, plus has more powerful features than any other solution, this update to the new user interface is vital to DaVinci Resolve's future. DaVinci Resolve 9 now ensures that the product remains a true, modern, multi platform tool, while retaining all the powerful features as the previous version.

Other new features in DaVinci Resolve 9 include 'Log grading' in every corrector node, audio playback support up to 16 tracks per source clip and audio renders in both Quicktime and MXF, automatic 'Audio Sync', clip data burn ins and batch rendering for dailies, additional and faster automatic stereo 3D image alignment tool, plus new stereoscopic 3D floating windows and new 3D monitoring options.

We expect customers will like the attention to detail in the new interface and think DaVinci Resolve 9 will take its place as one of the world's best looking user experiences. This means customers can focus on their creative work and not struggling with the software feature set. DaVinci Resolve 9 will also be quicker to learn for new users, as many of the user interface elements are common to other video software.

"This is a major rewrite of the DaVinci Resolve software and allows us to accelerate the workflow speed of the whole color correction process," said Grant Petty, CEO, Blackmagic Design. "DaVinci Resolve has always dominated high end feature film markets, and over the last year we have added even better integration with NLE software such as Avid and Final Cut Pro X, however it was still sometimes a little too cumbersome managing jobs. Essentially, we had the power, but it was complex to use. Now we have completely rewritten the software and it is fast, simple and still just as powerful. I think customers will love it!"

We're you there Marc, did you get your mitts on it? What did you think? I was hoping you would have your own accounting to give.

I didn't gt my hands on it, but it looked great. Good dailies support for audio sync, automatic and manual, burn-ins with ability to set preferences such as only first 6 frames, etc. New UI, better workflow UI type changes, ability to save presets for render outputs, alpha channel support for keys, or other graphic needs like logos, subtitles, etc. All in all, pretty kick ass.

Thanks Michael! Appreciate it. Sounds like some key improvements.

Version 9 is an early beta or even alpha and there will be changes. But in it's present form it is clearly a Major update, starting with new, much improved interface, support for audio for dailies work and deliverables. Resolve will have an option for single render, multiple deliverables. In other words, you'll be able to set up a single render with something, like prores, h264, dnxhd, all in one render. Very cool. Audio syncing in auto mode, based on TC or manually. Bringing images with sound imports them as separate video and sound files. And finally for die hard colorists- Log grading! Metadata settings are not burried anymore, but are next to the timeline and live. Metadata settings are per shot and even per version. Yes, you can have different metadata settings for different versions of the grade. iObviously, there is much more, but that's what I can remember.

Any word about ProRes 4444 support on Windows? Our primary grading system is Mac-based, but it would be really nice to use low-cost Windows boxes with Resolve Lite for dailies transcoding, etc. Just need better ProRes support there for it to be workable on most projects.

Why do you need prores 4444 for dailies?

Why do you need prores 4444 for dailies?

We need to be able to ingest 4444 for dailies -- not for Red projects, obviously, but for other cameras/recorders. And of course we need to be able to render out ProRes for any job cutting in FCP -- Apple's own Windows ProRes support in QuickTime is read-only even for 422/LT/Proxy, and doesn't support 4444 at all.

Nope, busy working! First NAB I've had to miss in about 10 years. But I'm keeping tabs through the net.

I'm very impressed by the whole spectrum of new products Blackmagic has at the show -- just the Teranex boxes alone surprised me. Given that these used to cost about $50K, and are now under $3K, is pretty amazing. And the new Resolve 9.0 is a huge change over the last revision, not a subtle upgrade.

Your information is incorrect. 4444 prores read had been supported on windows for a long time. Alexa files work just fine on the Windows, regardless of the application.

Jake have they finally implemented separate, per edit-clip, or per node Red settings (rather than just one possible for the whole R3D file, no matter where it appears in the timeline, as is now?) Is there control surface support within Red Settings?

Really would LOVE to be able to set separate ISO and WB within nodes, using various qualifiers

Before anybody this is beyond what a color grader should do, what would this be, exactly, other than color grading?

Err? Is this recent? Trying this about six months ago didn't work (latest QuickTime on Windows 7 at the time) and Google searches turned up numerous confirmations that it didn't work -- couldn't even get a ProRes 4444 file to load in QuickTime Player.

In any event, even if decode works now, about 60% of the projects we do dailies for seem to edit in FCP, to the lack of ProRes encoding support is still a major impoundment to using the Windows version.
