  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Davinci Resolve 12.5? NAB2016

A lot of OFX plugins cause errors. At least in the free version. The free version also gets bogged down pretty quickly and freezes.

I have the free version, I use OFXs, I haven't had any problems so far.

Do you really think my Mac rig is not up to snuff?
It really pisses me off, when people would defend BM products regardless of facts. I attribute this laissez faire attitude to causing BM to stop paying attention to the quality of their products and only caring about quantity of features.
And if you think I'm the only one having issues with Resolve 12, then see it for yourself:
http://liftgammagain.com/forum/index.php?threads/general-stability-resolve-12-is-anyone-happy.6286/

What facts? That I've had to help a lot of people with their mac setup while my own version 12 on my PC is working like a charm without freezes or crashes?

Sure thing. You have all dressed up with nowhere to go, when client requests Prores delivery:)

I either tell them that ProRes isn't needed or if they insist I just convert the master using my Macbook. No biggie for me there. I rather work on a super fast PC than pay double for half the power with a Mac. So converting to ProRes is a second step I can live with.

All I see in all your responses are I help, I do, I transcode, but when I point out at numerous users complaints in addition to mine, you don't want to even consider the possibility of flaky software and conveniently ignore the numerous posts of dissatisfied users.
So, congrats to you...

I haven't said anything about you not having problems have I? I can only refer to my own situation, what I've experienced and what I encountered other experienced. First off, I've seen way to many Resolve setups on Macs that aren't anywhere near as close to what you actually need for high end color grading. These are usually the people I have had to help getting their system together. Second, I've worked with Resolve since many versions ago and I have never had any problems that were breaking the workflow. Yes I've had crashes and errors, but not more than any other software I work with, be it Adobe, Avid, FCP, Redcine-X, speedgrade, Fusion or whatever.

If you are so pissed of at BM, then use Baselight, Nucoda or something else, or change the hardware setup and see if it works better. That you seem angry on me over the fact that it works for me without any major problems is very strange though. It works for me, it doesn't work for you, then it seems you have to stop waiting for BM to fix your problems and you fix them yourself in any way that can keep your business rolling.

Once more I read- I, me, I've worked, I work with, etc.
I salute you on your technical prowess in trouble free software and hardware operation. Unfortunately, the simple facts about your experiences don't exactly correlate with many other professional users using Resolve in the thread I provided. So, once more:

Luckily, I don't have to ask your permission or blessing to use Resolve or any other software nor do i need to justify my grievances to you when I have an outstanding issues to discuss. As far as your rant about use of something else beside Resolve, I do consider being software agnostic as well as keeping an open mind to be an important element of being able to deliberately make an informed decision on the performance or a lack of in a given software.
I humbly suggest you do the same.

The facts were presented to you about experiences of many other users using Resolve on different platforms in the thread I provided, as a proof, that I am not the only user with problems.

I've experienced Resolve 12 to be badly unstable and use it only for trancoding. Editing, longer projects etc. don't work for us. The possibility that the software "vaporises" is omnipresent. Bacause our post-production is build upon the Flame family I don't care much. What a pitty actually, Resolve prior to Vers. 12 has been a reliable workhorse for us.

BTW. Lustre got some love. Batch is now available in Lustre.

What are you talking about? I put forward my experience in this thread and you go on an attacking spree for some reason. Things don't work out for you and many others, I haven't said anything else or denied that fact. But you need to seriously take a chill pill.

"In my opinion, Resolve is the thing that BM does best. Everything else they do seems rushed and unfinished, but Resolve has always been working splendid. Other people who I've helped with technical problems always seem to try and run Resolve on low-spec systems, so maybe if people would stop using low performing Mac and get a high performance PC they would find it much more stable?"

First you propose, that Resolve is "splendid" and "Resolve is the thing that BM does best", then you go on to imply that there is really not a problem, but if there is, then it's all our own fault, because, if only "people would stop using low performing Mac and get a high performance PC they would find it much more stable".
So, I hope the third time is the charm- I'm one of many professional users, experiencing stability issues and here is the proof:

Where is your proof?
I'll take the chill pill, if you stop drinking the BM Cool Aid:nono:

Yeah, you seem to have missed the "IN MY OPINION". The fact IS that Resolve has been working splendid for ME. I've used quite a lot of the BM products and THE ONE THING that has actually worked great for me has been Resolve. That is MY OPINION. That you take MY OPINION as a criticism against you, your problems or anything is not my problem but seriously we are in a public forum so the world doesn't revolve around you. You see, I didn't directly quote you when writing that, which means it was a stand alone statement. If I adressed it directly to you it would have been different. However, I have, as I said in my post, encountered a number of people who tried to do high end work on low spec macs and that is also a FACT for my situation. And it's THESE PEOPLE that I referred to when pointing out low spec systems.

I'm not drinking any BM cool aid, I'm simply stating the facts that I live in and the opinions I have based on it. I don't even know what "proof" you are after? Maybe five years of continuos work with Resolve without any major problem, be it with R3D, Alexa, Sony, BM pockets and Ursas and whatevers? My "proof" that my personal experience have been great is just that. I don't know what the hell you mean by "proof" about my own personal experience with Resolve. Is that "proof" against other people not having problems? No. How do you even make up something like that?

I've had more problems with Adobe than Resolve, more problems with Avid than Resolve. So that's that. I suggested only that if you do have problems, you might go through your hardware and software setup, try another OS, another system etc. Have you done that? Or do you have "proof" that your system is the most perfect system the world has ever seen? That you don't need to check anything because you have the perfect system, it's only BM that's to blame for every problem you have. It was a suggestion based on my experience fixing other people's setups with Resolve. But I guess you are all-knowing about these things so I guess my suggestions are worthless in comparison. But... do you have any suggestions? Troubleshooting and trying out things to make things work? I have never waited for support or companies to fix their shit, I've always found my own solutions and I suggest people to try that as well since we want to do one thing, work.

Maybe it's just as simple as BM being to blame for not specifying exact hardware and OS specs for their software, like companies like Avid does. They have their approved systems for their software, anything else and they can try and help with it or debug, but it's still the users responsibility if they go off those approved specs so Avid doesn't take responsibility.

So yeah, I can agree that stability issues for Resolve might be adressed better if they created a list of approved hardware setups. But your aggressive ranting against my personal experience with Resolve is just insane. My experience is my experience, deal with it.

Some fantastic updates in 12.5. So much to like, better noise reduction, a lot of needed improvement to editing and key tagging. I like that Davinci took many of the best parts from Final Cut Pro X.

I really like that Davinci is becomming better at grading. Many of mine pieces needs complicated color grading. Round tripping from FCPX was at least very unpleasant with Davinci so I really like to avoid it. Not sure how round tripping is for Media Composer or Premiere though, so they may be better.

Cheers
/Andreas

Haven't really heard much discussion of the Send to Fusion feature. It looks to be similar to Dynamic Link in Adobe, and if it works will be a massive upgrade. I've recently switched over to Fusion from AE for much of my VFX work as Adobe seems (up to this point) committed to keeping AE on the same, slow architecture with minimal real GPU use in effects & compositing. Fusion has been so much faster running on a 980 Ti.

Personally, I've found 12 to be reasonably stable on my system with the occasional crash, but I've worked with a colorist whose system went down about once every few hours. So, maybe it's a system configuration issue.

And now i give up.
It makes zero sense to continue this pointless conversation, where I already pointed out THREE times at many problems OTHER users than I had issues with Resolve's stability and yet you keep ranting about YOU, YOUR superior troubleshooting abilities and YOUR overall "splendid" experience using Resolve.
So, I would suggest one more time to you to just try to have an open mind and attempt to use other software beside Adobe and BM designed by other companies, like FilmLight (free two weeks Daylight license), Digital Vision (free two weeks Nucoda license), Autodesk, Sam or SGO (free Mamba demo license) and then let us know, if you still feel, that Resolve is "splendid".

Jake, you´re very patient… I´m still on 11 and on an old MP, just because I didn´t dare to upgrade OS, Resolve and Desktop Video during an unfinished job. Now I would have the time to do it but reading about stability issues in 12 I´m not sure anymore. Did your major issues start with V12, as my Resolve 11 runs fairly good.

I had some issue on my mac, resolve was always crashing. My Nvidia card is responsible. Not only with resolve, but also with premiere etc. There are many forums talking about that. Adobe says it's Resolve responsability, Nvidia and Apple don't care. But I changed my settings in Resolve from GPU to opencl and since then it's working like a charm. I guess many know that but maybe it can help someone.

What the hell are you talking about? Just stop this nonsense. Seriously I don't give a crap about your situation, I didn't direct anything towards you. It's not your thread or forum and the world doesn't revolve around you. I don't give a crap about those other people having problem, if you care so much about them then comfort them instead of spreading your anger around like you do. You are taking things way too personal and I suggest you stop this. If you are gonna get aggressive against people who like something that you don't like then you need to seriously look over your behavior. I don't know what you are trying to accomplish by asking me to try something else and then tell you if Resolve "is soooo good". You just won't understand a simple fact... Resolve. Works. Perfectly. Fine. for. Me. And. Has. Been. For. Years.
So, I was trying to be friendly about the fact that things doesn't work for you, but obviously you can't seem to accept other people so... I don't give a crap about you having problems, I like my Resolve. Period.

Ulf, I was on resolve 10 on OSX mountain lion for almost three years (or something like that) ZERO issues... it was so stable.... on a macpro 2009:)

then i upgraded OSX to yosemite to run Resolve 12 (so I could use prores 444XQ), and bang... issue after issue... from resolve not launching if I put it in the dock, to random crashes ....

whether its resolve or the OSX upgrade or a combination... i dont know... but man it sucks.... so if you are happy with 11 and its working. just stay with it. in my opinion.

Thanks Sidney, already thought so. I´ll probably try a clean installation on a separate hard disc and keep my running setup safe. This new features look too tempting not to try ;-)

The new additions sound really impressive. If they actually work it will be good bye Adobe.
