I'll still be shooting my feature film on Dalsa Cams. (25 million budget)...
Personally, I think the Dalsa Corp. folks from the beginning were hoping their small and under-funded camera division would look enticing enough for someone to buy out. When you saw the physical size of the original Origin, you knew that what they needed was to collaborate with outside vendors more and spend more money to develop the camera further, but they seemed held back by a lack of capital, unlike RED.
Not only protectionism (rentals as core business rather than a more profitable policy for a new contender), I would add the under-capitalization (on marketing, for instance, among others) as well, yes.I don't think it was protectionism, it was under-capitalization. If they were truly following the model of Panavision, they'd have rental houses around the world and thousands of cameras and lenses to rent out -- not a half-dozen cameras in one office in Woodland Hills.

Look, the filmmaking market alone, ignoring the broadcast market, is simply not that large. There are limits to how many cinema-level movie cameras ever need to hit the market, hence why RED is also aiming at ENG, EFP, still, etc. as well.
Yes, economy of scale works to reduce costs, but there are aspects of the professional motion picture equipment market that will always be less subject to volume production and more subject to hand-built, precision-made speciality devices at low volume and higher cost.
But that`s something different than you`re referring to on your website right?
Sure. The more customers the company gets, the more sales it can make. Less dependent on just a few individuals.
Neat! Who are you? What kind of camera is that? Is it still being made? Details! :w00t:>cool. what`s this???
..well jim jannard mentioned several times after being bombarded with too many conflicting requests for red one and epic: if you think it's that easy go and build your own camera!
that's what we did..chuckle..and he's sooo right - it's not easy![]()
... And I am looking forward what ARRI will do next...![]()
Rumour has it, ARRI is planning to compete with RED.
Well yes of course, it is like they did it with competitor MOVIECAM. At the end ARRI bought MOVIECAM. Now they buying DALSA. There is defenetly a story behind it!-)
