Dalsa's dream fades to black

Sony didn't "screw" Panavision -- they developed the Genesis together (Sony sensor and SRW1 recorder) and Sony made a deal to delay using the same technology in their F35 for a couple of years, which they did. And Panavision owns Plus-8 Video, which rents out F23's and soon, F35's.

That's what a Panavision exec told me. It should be accurate if they weren't lying.

I find it odd to make claims that Panavision, Sony, Dalsa, ARRI, are all "behind" when they, in some ways, were ahead of RED just a few years ago. Someone is always ahead or behind and then ahead again.

RED benefitted from the pioneering work of others, and they incorporate outside technology, and others will take advantage of RED's developments, etc. I wouldn't write-off the competition by any means -- RED clearly hasn't.

I didn't say they couldn't catch up. They are behind mainly because they didn't invest in their own technology and relied on others. Genesis is 90% Sony technology. I'm not how much of the D20/1 Arri actually has/owns but if most of the engineering was through fraounhoefer, then it's going to be that much harder for them to catch up.
