my name is GABRIEL GARCIA ROSA and i am a Independent award winning director, free-lance cinematographer, editor, and writer. i am currently using a dvx 100 to shoot my short films . i would like to be a cinematographers apprentice. i currently attend the art institute of new york learning video production but i would like to go more in depth into my craft.

I suggest you do the leg work on your own. I'd be shocked if the Art Institute of NY doesn't have some sort of placement office. Start calling up the local camera rental places too- they might have some leads. And really it's not an apprenticeship you're looking for, it's an internship.

Just a question, if you're already an award winning writer/director, etc why would you want to do a free gig on a camera crew? You sound a bit more above the line in desired position.

becuz i'm still a student filmmaker that wants to learn more about cinematography and be in the biz. i am a award winning director but oly in my school's film festival.

to top all of that off .............its hard getting my foot in the door if you know what i mean.

Ah ok- then you should start making some calls. Maybe a DP will respond to this post and take you onto a camera crew but I wouldn't be surprised if none did either. The way to get your foot in the door is knock on a lot of doors, i.e. make phone calls, etc be persistent and pro-active. And again I'd be really surprised if your school has no facility for helping to find you an internship.

perhaps you should use the term student award winning Director vs. award winning director ? in general i tend to give/help out students over somebody that list themselves as award winning this/that

i apologize, but at times when i say student no one tends to hire compared to when someone says independent there all ears. let me correct myself i am A STUDENT DIRECTOR.

I would take an award-winning coffee carrier.

SARCASM IS NOT REALLY NECESSARY. i am a student filmmaker that will make mistakes no different then you, i'm sure, when you started. i remember a cinematographer who told me "fake it till you make it." i guess in all honesty that was what i was doing.

thanks for the advice and i do apologize for me saying independent award winning director etc instead of student award winning director. when i say student director no one really looks at my work or at times considers me at all. i was also following advice from a professional d.p who told me "fake it till you make it" and i guess i was doing just that. once again i do apologize.

I think you misunderstood Florian... He might be serious as an apprentice WOULD fetch coffee...

You will need thick skin to go anywhere in this business. You will fetch coffee...

If you really want to apprentice - it helps to start at the bottom and camera PA or load. Pay your dues (as one has to and does) and move up the ladder. You will meet and work with a lot of DPs this way which could be considered better than learning under one person. Plus, you get paid to do it.

thanks for the advice i appreciate it. :)

I was sarcastic with my comment, I drink mainly water when working. Throw away the faking advice. I think the opposite is true. Figure out what it is you want to do first: is it writing, directing or cinematography? Then dedicate yourself to it with heart and soul. Never lie, never overrepresent, NEVER BE LATE.

If you haven't figured out what you want to be yet, your post might read:

I'm a student and lover of the filmmaking craft. I haven't found my calling within that yet. I am looking to experience the life and work of a cinematographer, so I can either decide to move on and be a director (who knows more about cinematography than others) or fall in love with the art & craft. Anyone interested in opening up this humble students eyes? I will clean cases, bring water and work day and night in exchange.

once again i apologize.

Never lie?

I would say, never be caught lying - which is what just happened, as you can hardly bluff on reduser...

But never lie? In LA?

Ist der Pabst katolisch? :emote_popcorn::laugh::laugh:

i wasn't really lying though, if you define Independent filmmaker you will see that its no real different then a student filmmaker. Independent filmmaker is a person whose film is produced outside of any major film studio. he or she finance their movie or short on their own or through an investor; student filmmakers do that every time they make a movie. i am also a award winning student filmmaker and although it means nothing to you or anyone else it still something that i can put on my resume. so did i lie or did you just misinterpreted what i was saying.

Thats all well and good, but I think your wording is a bit off for what you're after.

Personally, I would lay off the award winning stuff if you're after a work experience level position. It kind of contradicts what you're saying, and without meeting the applicant in person, I would imagine them to POSSIBLY have an attitude when it comes to being told what to do.

Even though I completely appreciate your need to stand out from the piles of C.Vs all the other students are sending out.

I hope you find a position, best of luck.

thank you for being kind and i do apologize for coming across that way because i'm not that way at all. i wanted to create this thread to get a job or be given advice, not to be called a lair or such. i understand that i will be used to fetch coffee or what have you and some of the advice from people who have responded to this thread was very helpful but i did not ly. i will also use my words wisely so this misinterpretation won't happen again, this thread was an experience.
