  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Custom Steadicam for REDusers <1800USD - Post your ideas

I personally use V-mounts on my scarlet and definitely don't mind having just voltage info via 2 pin LEMO.[/QUOTE]

+1 on this.

Great review, looking forward to it, when can we expect what, when and if, came will modiy the steadicam?

Thanks Michael !

I think everybody will be agree to ask to Came for the modifications (the ones advised by Michael and others REDUsers... I trust in David to select...) and a shipping date ?
I think it's really important to get stronger springs to have the ability to put follow focus HF, HDSDI HF and others accessories...

Ideas for modifications

Stronger arm springs for a payload of up to 11kg or more. Maybe replaceable springs for heavier loads
Easy and fast adjustment of the springs. Right now, an allen wrench is required even though there is a hand knob
All parts milled and not made out of folded metal
Monitor mount on 15mm rods
Battery plate on 15mm rods, angle adjustable (either V-mount or AB-mount depending on every individual order) with LEMO 2pin out
Quick release dovetail system with two 1/4" and one 3/8"
Additional forward travel for the camera mounting dovetail plate
Additional clearance of bottom of tilt head when mounted on the sled cradle. A thicker docking ring or additional spacer would solve this problem
Docking plate which mounts to any light stand
Sturdy carbon pole with diameter between 1.5“ to 2“
Improved vertical adjustment length of the arm
A 90 degree mark for camera head tilt. Also markings on the center pole to align the monitor and battery sleds.
Bubble levels on both stage and bottom of the sled (with back-light)
2x 2pin LEMO, HDMI and an HD-SDI socket at the bottom of the sled
3x 2pin LEMO (2x 12VDC, 1x 5VDC), HDMI and HD-SDI socket at the top of the sled
1x 2pin LEMO to 6pin RED LEMO cable
3x 2pin LEMO to flying wire cables
Junction box with 1/4" thread or rod clamp: 2pin LEMO in / 2x D-Tap, 2x XLR and 2x USB 5v out (at additional cost / not included in the base package)
No generic printed text or labels like "Camera Stabilizer"or "Hotwheel"
All aluminum parts black anodized

If everyone is ok with this list, I'll forward it to Laing and CAME.

I'm sorry, so is one of the upgrades to have a v-mount (or ab-mount depending on the order) with a 6-pin/RED lemo to the top? As in, wired so that you don't need to worry about a power solution at all for DMSC (Epic/Scarlet) cameras, or is it just to include a routed cable but then we still have to worry about connection/plate? Obviously the less fussing the better -- if we can get it to a point where we just attach a battery, monitor, and then connect the camera up top, that'd be sweet.... but if people are ordering DSMC Battery Belts with decent success in routing (and it's cheaper) than maybe that's a more suitable option.

Also, I'm not sure how everyone else feels, but I was kind of hoping to leave SDI free (instead use HDMI for monitoring) so that I can attach an optional/off-board recorder... Will the unit have both cables, or just SDI fed through?

Mike, did you read the David's post ?

I guess the battery mount will be already connected to the bottom socket / or will connect to it thru 2pin Lemo ?

Yeah, I read that and it's kind of what confused me. There are a lot of additional connectors and real estate is somewhat limited (both for feeding wire inside and just the amount of connectors located at the bottom and top). I guess I just wanted clarity. I figured there'd be two cables running the length -- one for power, one for monitor -- and then a lead to power the monitor (across the bottom) and a lead to power follow focus/accessory (across the top).

I want to have a 2pin Lemo cable out of the battery plate. That way it's easier to fix broken parts and take the sled apart.

I will try to do a draw or schema of what the new package will be made of... for clarity... ;-)
Maybe this week-end...
Maybe some gifted photoshoper or graphist present here could do it faster than me ?

I can do a quick photoshop layout of the wiring and send it also to Laing. There will be only three cables (HDMI, HD-SDI and power) inside the pole. The power cable will be slipt up at the ends.

L'Aigle (I think you also wrote me about them) is interested in the group buy and will prepare a quote for us!

I did a quick Photoshop non-technical wiring diagram. I'll do this weekend a normal wiring diagram, but I thought this would be nice to get an idea where the final plugs and cables will be.

Quentin, if you could find some time to do some nicer graphics (or the the technical diagram), I would be grateful to you :-)

Just a quick point. I thought the monitor was going on a sliding/adjustable section at the base?

BTW David - thanks for battling on and keeping this going... I know from personal experience how complex dealing with this type of thing can be... hope it's not taking too much of your time!

Great - presume also that the rail mount (for the monitor) will have a standard rail block type lock (basically so you can help balance by sliding it forwards and backward too).
