  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Custom Steadicam for REDusers <1800USD - Post your ideas

Will the redesign support the Red One in addition to the other Red cameras?

Thanks

Yes, it will support every camera below 8kg (given that you need at least 3 kg for accessories). One of the modification I asked for were replaceable springs. In that case you could also fly way heavier setups.

I did a quick Photoshop non-technical wiring diagram. I'll do this weekend a normal wiring diagram, but I thought this would be nice to get an idea where the final plugs and cables will be.

Quentin, if you could find some time to do some nicer graphics (or the the technical diagram), I would be grateful to you :-)

Very helpful work David! This makes things a lot clearer for everyone involved.
There also needs to be a bit of input from current users as to how a junction box could mate with the tilt-head
e.g. what dimensions it needs to be, any special issues regarding clearance of tilt angles.
Is there a current owner out there who can take a few photos of the tilt head from different angles, showing max/min/horizontal angle, showing some close-up detail of how the head is attached to the post, the space for mounting options and how much "real estate" we have to play with?
Another thought ... once the J-box is attached (at the factory) can it be dismantled, detached? Is the head screwed and glued? Mmmmm. Just wondering.

We should definitively make sure that nothing gets glued

The additional j-box could be either attached via screws or maybe they could add a rod clamp. Would would you recommend?

Here is a quick photoshop draw of what I would like :

If the junction box at the bot could be stackable it would be great.
I think we can keep the tilt head since it can be remove...
Who would like XLR on his junction box ? It's a big and heavy connector, so if we can do without, it will be best I think !
David, why do you want a two batteries plate ? With our light Epic and Scarlet, two battery would maybe be too much weight ?

I'm very interested in the group buy if it can support a small to medium sized Red One setup. Great job working on putting this together!! Please add me to any future updates for the group buy.

Just another reason why this is the best forum on the internets :)

if you guys want to really try and jump into ...more details about how a star=dicam works and how it should be, there is a forum that you can see people making their own, sharing their experiences, and some have build some amazing rigs.
here it is and good luck

Ok, I'm totally in on this buy if/when this rig can support my Red One!! just watched the videos and it is totally worth it at this price point to get these type of shots!

Sorry for the double posts, but this information is important:

There seems to be a problem with the otherwise amazing comunication with Laing. Vitaliy Kiselev from http://www.personal-view.com/ (famous for his GH2 hack) is also offering Laing systems like Brandon mentioned:

I came across this today. Lots of good info, demos and pictures. The post markings seem nice to have.

http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5749/laing-steadicams-arms-and-vests/p1

I haven't realized that Vitaliy is selling them (thought that he had organized also some kind of group buy), so I posted in the linked thread about our plans for a group purchase . Vitaliy imidiatly deleted the post and sent me a quite unfriendly message. Over the course of the following messages, he told me that all communication to LAING and CAME is supposed to go over him and that I am supposed to delete any price information and password protect all the other information.

Tracy from LAING, with whom I was in contact before, wrote me a message that she wont be available for communication anymore, since she has been assigned to an other very important job, and that I should communicate with Vitaliy.

I'm not really sure what's going on here, but please be patient, if there are some push backs.

Now for the goods news. Other manufacturers are preparing offers, one of them being PROline, who produces the amazing T2000 rig. More news to come :-)

PS: Anyone interested in testing rigs in Paris and LA this weekend?

EDIT: Ok Vitaliy is not allowing me to post any of the communication between us, while quite openly forwarding my mails. He also refuses to communicate via email, only via his message board. As long as Laing is not getting back in the communication, I think that the Laing project failed. It's a pity, since it seemed quite promising, and my hope is still there for it to happen, but not like this.

I'm pretty sure that Vitaliy will try to communicate with you directly. Please don't fall for it. It would be a pity if this group deals falls apart, especially since other manufacturers are responding to this new market.

I'll be honest and say that posting group buys in other forums kind of dilutes the idea of a community (be it online) getting a unique price when it extends to anyone who stumbles apon a code.

I don't think that's what happened.

It looks like Vitaliy sells on the original systems.

David instigated the group buy for RU and has been doing a lot of direct communications with the (various) makers... and getting some good results.

Another RU then found the Laing system on sale in another forum and linked images/info etc.

Now, it seems Laing have refused to deal directly anymore with David, due to the fact they already sell to Vitaly.

That's my read of David's update.

The arrangement with Vitaly has obviously been in place well before the thread started. Laing were obviously trying to keep this on the down low. This is going to be the case with any manufacturer with distributors already in place. I can only foresee group buys actually going through distributors actually to keep everyone happy. Unless of course you find a manufacturer with no distribution yet.

I know that there are people like us who would be interested in this deal (bmcuser). It's not that it's bad for anyone if more people join, since the more user participate, the higher the profit for the manufacturer and the lower the price for us.

But Vitaliy doesn't seem to be a reseller... no idea what his role is.

EDIT: @ Bob Gundu: That's why we keep the prices a secret.

looking at proline... i would strongly advise you to go this direction if you get to have a good offer.
they look like they know what they are doing.engineering point of view..
regards

Yes, the Proline one stuff looks interesting - let's see what David can do. Looking forward to more info.

If the Laing project dies, Vitaliy won't have any business from any RU members, his site was never on our radar and he has now pretty much disqualified himself as an option ... as you saw he's not even a real reseller, it looks like he's selling information. If I stumbled upon his site, in the wild, I would have took it as a scam and promptly moved on. Hopefully we can find an alternative soon if Laing stays out.

repost from the main thread: David says he's got an offer from L'aigle (The Eagle)

The L'aigle seems to have a premium "look" that I quite like. Doesn't look/seem cheap. However my assumption is the prices are going to be a bit on the high side. http://www.laigleparis.fr/english-prices.htm

From doing a little investigating on their website, it looks like the L'Aigle INTEGRAL is the model we're lookin' at

Here's an English translation of the webpage.

And the original webpage:

http://www.laigleparis.fr/english-prices.htm

I don't know about you guys, I think I like this model better than the Laing/Came

David, thank you SO much for your hard work in co-ordinating this group buy!

Sounds like an interesting deal for the L'angle, however the price is significantly higher than the CAME. How much is L'Angle's original price, and how big of a discount is the group buy price comparatively?

Thanks!
