Just a heads up for those who might be wondering why all those tired old crap arguments about "real 4K" versus whatever-the-hell-John-Galt-is-pushing are coming up again. [sigh]

Could Creative Cow just move the hell on?!

Ha, Ha! I just read the article. Some of his points were very informative. Once I ready up on his profile and realized he was all Panavision and justifying the technologies that they backed, the context did become clear. Man, Creative Cow really does not like Red.

Just read this as well. Still remember seeing Star Wars when I was in living in London. To me it really didn't look good at all.
I can just imagine trying to make an add in ASC like RED has done now with pullin stills from the camera with that

They were really anti-Blackmagic Design for many years too. They don't seem to like pot-stirrers. Really don't understand Ron's angle. Why not just get out the way and let the users come to their own conclusions?

Can someone knowledgable enough talk on some of the counter arguments or potential flaws in his reasonings?
(Love to hear Grahame's thoughts)

Shane,

I have been a longtime contributor and forum leader there and they even have a RED forum. (to which I have contributed many articles).

I do not think they are Anti-RED because they post articles with varying viewpoints.

I do think that bringing back a 2009 article is a bit much though.

I'll say! When it landed in my email box this morning, I thought I was reading some sort of updated thinking on the subject....

instead, it was a reprint, without any caveat stating that it was a reprint/rehash of a 4-year-old discussion...

on the eve of the 6K Dragon release - doesn't seem like much of a coincidence to me.

I think this is a poor showing by the Creative Cow, quite frankly....

I guess this whole game is about hits and trends.

that might be one way to get some traffic.

I agree, the rehash with no update is off.

The Blackmagic 4k cinema camera is going to ship long before Dragon does in volume. Of the two if there is a conspiracy I suspect it's to coincide with the 4k camera that's actually being launched soon.

John Galt is obviously smart enough to present his case in a carefully crafted way that manages to scaffold opinions on top of convenient facts and industry orthodoxy.

Agree that the Cow pushing it out at this point in time reflects poorly on their credibility.

Cheers - #19

That was the sound of me falling out of my chair

Hi David

Yes, I was once a forum leader there too and I feel they do a great job - generally. The site is pure gold for many people and was once for me too. I don't go there that often nowadays (more a reflection on the path my career has taken than anything to do with the Cow itself) so I'm not sure what their stance on Red is. I drifted away from their RED forum early on as it seemed very video oriented and not really in RED's intended market to my way of thinking.

Although the repeated reissuing of Galt's article is odd, I'm not sure it amounts to specific targeting of all things RED or something else. Creative Cow have the right to publish whatever the hell they want to on their site and whether or not it's helpful to RED or RED's customers is obviously not their concern. I just posted this in case any RED owners started experiencing Groundhog Day over Galt's arguments resurfacing long after they should, probably, be dead.

One can speculate 'till you're blue in the face as to why they do this stuff - whether it's commercially or personality driven or just motivated by suspicion for anything new or seen to be breaking industry pricing conventions - I don't know and I'll keep my theories to myself. Certainly RED and BMD share similarities across all those possible reasons and both have found hurdles with the Cow at one time or another.

I imagine it brought them a lot of caché years ago, to be associated with a high profile player such as him... Being deemed worthy of the interview, you know? I wouldn't be surprised if re-running the article was done as a kind of reminder.

I still read their articles, but I always find it odd that when the writers talk about digital cinema and the revolution, they may put Red in one sentence or not mention it at all. Fan boy shit aside, I saw the crazy arguments and release of 4k to the masses first hand when I hit this forum in 2008 and got addicted after I saw "The Milk Girls" clip. Now that 4k is common place, their articles still skip over Red's contribution to the evolution of digital cinema. This is what I mean by Creative Cow not liking Red.
