Hi Everyone,

Like many of you, the change over from RED ONE (MX) to EPIC M, X, Production epic, epic S, Scarlet... etc etc.. is going to be a tedious year long process. and expensive for some.
We have ordered 4 EPICS, to M's and 2x "X"s plus BOMB's, plates, brackets etc etc.. blah blah blah...

So what will be left of the REDONE bodies. The body itself obviously, The EVF's, hard drives and battery brackets, Roll cages, top handles... thats about it.

The rest of it will migrate to the EPIC kits.

So... What is a REDONE MX body worth with an EVF and a few brackets.

I've paid my bodies off 10x over so I'm not really that fussed, but really.. what are they worth now pre EPIC coming out, what will they be worth in 12 months time post EPIC...

They are still and will be for many years a great camera to shoot with. They still and will shoot cinema quality images good enough for at least another 5 years (until 4k RAW comes out in a 5d MkIIIII... ??????...guess.????...

So my question is.. sell it and for how much, or put them on the shelf and stare at them and look and collect history..
If you sell them... what would you actually get for it.....

Remember what the 435 to to the Arri 2,
What Canon 5d, did to video,
What RED did to film...

Friend of mine just sold his $250,000 basic Arri 435 kit for $12,500 4 days ago.... this is what made me think out loud.

By the way, I love my RED ONEs, They made me love shooting again. The EPIC will just keep me there.

Cya...

Mark- it's hard to say however from experience full MX kits are going for no more than 20-25k US.

Given that Epic S will be a camera with similar specs (kind of...), perhaps use that as a base for pricing your kit?

I am guessing around 15K USD is fair at this point, but will be harder each day to convince people of that price point.

Can you IMAGINE the 5D mk7 with 4K raw?????

I am sure it'll happen, but the real question is, will they release the 5D mk8 only two months later as a 5k camera, for half the price and twice th functions? :)

Ivan

can you send them to a school for tax credit?

Arriflex 435 for $12,500...? Got another???

I know of a few cases where Non-MX bodies were presold for about the same as the Stage 2 savings, around $10k. Add some accessories and the average seems to be about $13k-$14k.

Again, this is for Non-MX and either a sharing arrangement or after delivery of Epic X arrangement.

I would have paid a lot more than $12500 for the 435! He should have contacted me! Anyone else want to get rid of 435 cheap let me know!!!!

It's a good question. I've got an MX kit with an early Stage 2 reservation attached (and paid for) that I'm considering selling. Hard to know what to expect at this point.

I'm thinking of keeping MX to use as the B camera on an upcoming feature, assuming I get my stage 2 Epic in time to use as the A camera. Shooting at 4.5K, 2.4 to 1, because the sensors are identical. Has anyone done this? Is there anything about this plan that makes it unworkable? After all, in two days Pirates 4 will be released, shot entirely on Red Ones. An MX One is not a boat anchor yet, is it?

Considering it costs about $10k more being in stage 2 over stage 3...one would hope it is worth at least that much otherwise it seems rather pointless if you plan on selling it afterwards. If your still using, billing or renting it...well it's definitely worth the $10k extra. But when the point in time of EPIC S hitting the ground at around $12K for the brain, getting well less than $10k will probably be reality, plus whatever you can wrangle on the accessories specific to the R1...but that could be a loooooong time away.
Me, well I'm keeping the R1 as a great 'B' camera as has the same chip as EPIC...until Monstro that is.

Well. I've got a friend in the market for a r1mx. He would like to get a complete kit, sans lenses, but all the numbers we have seen are north of 35k!

We really thought we where going to be able to get something decent for around 20k-25k.

He is lloking to purschase in the next 30 days, he is also looking for glass. So if guys got any leads let me know.

Don't read anything into this thread other than what do you think it will be worth once everyone gets the epics.
When a arri 435 can be sold for 12.5k, arri media London had several for sale as well and most sold for very very low amounts.
This is only the reason I posed this question.

I have to repeat, the red one MX in my eyes has another 5 years in it. Even more if your only doing TV ads and Tv shows.
Tv stations only play NTSC or Pal and all slowly going to (compressed) HD. So really a 4k camera like the red one MX is more than enough, actually it's and over kill most times. Meaning Nobody needs to worry about there investments in there RedOnes as they are well ahead of the current broadcast qualities. TV (broadcast) has to match Red not the other way around, it's easy for red to go backwards to TV land.

Looking at everyones replies. I think I'll keep one for the shelf for sentimental reasons (once all my epics turn up) and either sell the other one and give the money to a charity, or donate it to a film school.

Well, I think you'll have a hard time finding a complete package for a low price. Whoever is getting an EPIC will keep whatever can still be used – lenses in particular, but most accessories will still fit as well. Remember, this RED!

Not a video manufacturer doing his/her best to make nothing fit any more once the next model is out…

I would love to buy a second hand Red One if the price was right. Even if its not Epic upgradable that works fine for me.

Hey Mark, if they're just going to collect dust, I'd be willing to take one off your hands for $6000-$8000 (depending on when it was actually available). I'll give you a credit in everything I shoot with it and send you a copy. It'd have to be before Epic-S starts shipping though. The thing about donating to a film school is that students have no respect for the gear and don't give a rat's ass about whomever graciously donated it... if you "donate" to an individual they'll no doubt thank you as much as possible. (I'm joking... well, half joking.)

I imagine that if the RED1 market somehow completely evaporates with the release of Epics and Scarlets, there'd still be people willing to buy them if they can get them substantially cheaper than Epic-S. If not, used prices would bottom out and there are going to be a quite a few lucky students out there.

Personally, based on the currently available info and specs, I'd rather have an R1mx than a Scarlet (fixed or not), so if I can get a used one for anywhere near the tentative scarlet prices I'd jump on it... Everything I've read about Epic seems to make the R1 look cumbersome and heavy by comparison, and when you combine that with the extra HDRx latitude, it makes the Epic-S an incredible value at ~$12,000. I can't really think of a scenario where the R1 would be a better (or even equivalent) option to the S, unless, of course, it was discounted heavily... And that's in spite of how useful and relevant RAW 4k will be over the next 5 years.

So, for example, if you were in a position to sell for half the cost of an Epic-S, I'm sure most moderately successful rental houses would be willing to pitch in the additional cost to get the HDRx and 5k of the S. On the flipside, the person who buys an R1mx for half the cost of an Epic-S would be more than happy with the purchase since, as you said, RAW4k still has at least half a decade of relevance.

I think anything under $10K for a Red or MX isn't going to happen. I'd love it too - as I'd snap one up also - but, new R1's are still going at $25K... until the Epic-X really hits the market (ie after all the stages are completed - when one can, as a current non-Red owner, simply order one & the deal is done) I don't think there'll be much movement in current pricing.

Obviously, when Epic-X becomes the norm & we know what's going on with Epic-S, the market will change... but I do feel that the current situation regarding 'when they come' etc is keeping R1 prices higher.

I'd have loved an Epic-S, was even thinking trying to push my Exec Producer towards an Epic-X, but I have projects coming onstream in the Autumn/winter crossover period (brr - outdoor shooting in the UK - wet & dull - gonna need umbrellas!) - so, it'll probably end up F3 with S-log (rented)... however, I'd much rather have spent the $$$ (well £££!) on the purchase of an X or S (fully kitted out).

Now, with the Japan delays etc, the after market for old Reds is still high - precluding taking a jump into Red ownership for people like myself. A full, ready to shoot & kitted out Red for under $10K - yes please! But, just wishful thinking at the moment.

Would have loved to shoot Red (as the projects we're doing are Anamorphic), but I feel that we'll get info on Scarlet before anything comes on Epic-S... this way, the Epic-X won't destroy the second hand position of R1's. As you say, once Epic-S hits (if it is $12K) that'll be the end of older (non Epic) brains. But I just can't see X being available soon & S is a long way off.

So, bit of a seller's market for a while, I think. Of course, it does depend on owner's views regarding any rental/B-cam potential they might get from old bodies.

All we need is a time machine - set it for the future & bring back a goodie bags of X & S's (plus all the extras - of course). LOL. :001_smile:
