  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

It sounds simple.....actually is.....
open a clip in the viewer and click the "snapshot" button.
Yes, it creates a snapshot even with my burn-in data.
But what, if you have maybe thousands of clips?
When I select export to TIFF, it will export every frame of the clip. i need only one.
Must not be TIFF, could be also JPEG.
I hope there is an other way!

You could do it in Resolve. Just open a 4K (or 5K) project, drop the R3D on the timeline, find the specific frame you want, grab a still, then export the still as an uncompressed TIFF. I've done this for cases where filmmakers needed to use specific high-res frames for posters and publicity shots for a feature or short.

I think Dorian is talking about having a snap frame of every clip from a mag or project and if there is a way to do this automatically rather than manually taking a snap of each clip.
Well, if you had 1000 clips and needed one still of each clip as a reference, you could again do this in Resolve. There's a mode where you could load up X number of clips in a timeline, then have Resolve grab the middle-most still frame (dead center in time). Export those stills and you have one still per clip. Getting the embedded TC and clip information would be the tricky part.

Thanks Marc,
but honestly, I would prefer it in RCX, where I know my way around.... never used Resolve. And.... as far as I know, the free ver. exports only to 3840x2160.
I need the highest possible resolution as a single shot.
And for that I would not want to buy the full ver. of Resolve.
Yeah, and also need the clip name/ clip length and possible Time Code burned in.
One option would be to export as tiff and select 1 frame and delete the others, but then picking 1 frame and delete all 600-700 frames PER clip would be also not real fun!

Craig, yes, I know how to get a single frame off a clip.
This way is ok, if you have only a few clips. But.....
my initial post "open a clip in the viewer and click the "snapshot" button.
Yes, it creates a snapshot even with my burn-in data.
But what, if you have maybe thousands of clips?"

You can do this with a custom script empowering REDLine (command line tool part of RCX install)...

Have to check on burn in options in REDLine as I can't remember if it can do those too.

I have a small app called foolcat that can extract still images from R3Ds but right now it is set to only grab jpgs and make a pdf catalog of your clips...

Mikael, thank you.
I will have a look at Red Line.
I would not prefer an other app because it will be too time consuming.
I bring in every folder into the Project Window, color correct and export to Quicktime and then need a still image as well.
I just found out, it could be quite fast,as long as I have all clips in the project panel and flip through the clips only by clicking the down arrow and then the snap shot button. This gives me all I need including the burn in data.
(Previously I was double clicking every clip to show up in the viewer, but this is not needed.)
However, if there is an option to export within RCX faster, this suggestion will be very appreciated.

Maybe you can find a keystroke automation app and have it do :

- export tiff keystroke or simulated button click
- mini pause if needed
- down arrow
- mini pause for RCX to load the next clip

Repeat that 'macro' 1000 times if you have 1000 clips

Might take half an hour to set it up with the correct pauses but then will save you a lot of time and avoid mistakes / missed clips :-)

that would be perfect! especially for the missed clips!
is it possible to set that in Red Line or would I need Apple Script for it?
it is not 1000 clips, I mean 1000s.
Have not counted them yet........

On mac I used quickKeys in the past which is quite a powerful automation app... Maybe keyboard maestro or even automator could work for this combined with RCX... Otherwise yes a script to automate REDLine would be the most robust solution.

Thank you! I will try... in Photoshop is it quite easy, not sure on the Mac.
