Hey Folks,
I would love to hear which lenses have the best lens flares. I'd love to find some big crazy flares as well as some that are just subtle and cool. If you have a still would you mind posting?

kowa's flare like crazy, super baltars too.. but my fav flare is from the K35's.. just so round and organic. Superspeeds are also amazing flares. Older glass coatings are much more conducive to crazy flaring, which i love. Good thread!

Hi Sam, I believe you have the 85mm f/1.2L in your bag. That and the 50mm f/1.2 I'm pretty fond of. If you are looking to add some glare into the mix, removing the OLPF port bushing helps to amplify that effect.

I have an older Canon 55 FL f/1.2 that does some interesting things. The Voigtlander 40mm f/2 produces a red "halo" that has a unique look. I like the chromatic rays that come from the corner of the Red Pro Primes too.

Also check out some ultra wides, here's a shot from the Sigma 14mm f/2.8 that produces little "jewels":

Anamorphic flare is just as beautiful.

Beautiful Guys,
This is exactly what I'm looking for.
Cheers,
Sam

I also love the lomo square front flares. Foton A zoom.

Here is a music video we did last summer. All the "bar" shots are flared B-Speeds. More of an overall veiling flare, than specific hot spots. Notice the gnarly three-irised bokeh....love that.

Shot by my great pal Alex Baev.

It's gotten a little out of hand on the last couple of J.J. Abrams' films...

Cooke 18-100 T3 has insane flares, rainbows all over the place :)

Look at Timur's sample images on the first page of this discussion. I love the image of the Motorcycle on the bridge. Brilliant.
Does anybody know where to rent one in LA?

I also love my 18-100's flare characteristics.
I have no first hand knowledge what lens they might have used (maybe Super Baltar) but at the beginning of "Mean Streets" there is a really nice one. i think it's when they introduce the character Michael ("these are Jap adapters, not German lenses")
The camera pans past the sun and the flare that appears is practically three dimensional. REALLY nice, if a bit in your face.
Cheers,
Harry

The iPhone 5 seems to have awesome purple flares. :sarcasm:
