I'm working with a client who's still on Final Cut Pro 7 and they are scared of working with the R3D files, but still want 4K/5K. We're going to have to shoot on a Sony FS7 unless I can show them an affordable conversion tool. Any suggestions?

I must be missing something but...

With DSMC2 cameras you can shoot ProRes. And, with REDCine-X (free), you can open R3Ds and output ProRes.

And, of course, you could use another NLE like FCPX ($300) or Premiere (~$50/month, I think) and generate ProRes - but why do that with REDCine-X available for free.

1. RCX
2. Pretty much any modern NLE
3. You can even use Adobe Media Encoder if modern NLE's are too scary

Yea, he's sort of an older client who's set in his ways. If it's not a 2-stop process (drag and drop, press button), he probably won't go for it. Maybe I'll just walk him through Red Cine X on the phone though...

We worked with r3d proxies in FCP7, check in RCX to generate proxies.

Exporting ProRes from REDCINE-X Pro is not too complicated. But even if he couldn't get it, I would offer to convert them myself (and do a one-light correction) if it was beneficial to give this client a taste of what RED footage can look like.

The benefit do exporting ProRes out of REDCINE-X being that you will also be able to use IPP2, along with the better demosaic algorithm and the highlight extension algorithm.

As mentioned, REDCINE-X PRO supports ProRes encoding even on PC from REDCODE RAW .R3Ds

The Scarlet-W only does 2K Prores, and the hdmi/sdi outputs are limited to 1080.

Scarlet-W actually now supports ProRes 422 and ProRes 422 LT at 4K up to 29.97 fps.
