Perspective?

Perspective?

I was the Cinematographer on Tonaci's little satire. It is neither my best or worst work (I have been doing this for a while now). I was not involved in any way with the pre-production and, as has been mentioned, had limited resources on set. Since the director did have a vision for the piece, and since IMHO pre-production is the preferred time to hash out creative choices with a director, I followed his lead.

All that said, I am not throwing Tonaci under the bus as I believe the concept of the piece came across despite the technical issues. Would a more lush, filmic look have better framed the point he wished to make, perhaps. Ultimately he took a risk and MADE IT HAPPEN - for that I, and many other "fanboys" on RedUser are giving him props. Criticizing is easy, doing is hard.

For the record, I do not think film is dead. I do think that the vast majority of production will move to electronic capture for economic reasons and that the quality of the digital images will improve markedly over time. I also think that with next generation sensors and proper DI tools we will see top artists create fabulous images with digital cinema cameras of which the RedOne is part of the vanguard.

In any case, talent is still the most important piece of the puzzle. I have little doubt that Tonaci and other young guns will use these wonderful new tools to create groundbreaking work that will accelerate the evolution of the visual language of motion media. Tonaci's calm and assured responses to the criticism leveled in this thread only make me more certain that in time he will be a valuable member of some crack teams that create wonderful pieces - of course those works will be criticized too, its just the nature of the beast.

Yo Blair! one of the awesome heroes of our project who drove at like 3am in the morning from san diego to long beach to bring #19 RED to join in on the fun. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. There will definitely more projects ahead that we'll all work on to share with the community. I got a few more ideas cookin.
