  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Contax Zeiss Survival Guide

35-70 just blocked on 70. It is in very good state and no perceivable issues. Any advice before taking it to lens service ?

Just an update. I've had my set for about 2 years now. I use them mostly for narrative and non-commercial work (though I have used them on commercials) because of the great low con look they provide. Sample image using one of the lenses (35 if I remember correctly) along with an Epic-Dragon. Thanks Nick!!!

Awesome shot Arthur!!!!

Have you modded for 77mm making a step down from the threads where the series 9 retention ring screws onto, right? ;)

The problem is that it will vignette with wides...which is the widest lens you can use @ 6K with it and a 77mm filter on front??

Haha - yeah these hoods were custom made for us by Schneider. They added an 82mm-77mm stepdown in the front.

At 5K we havent had any vignetting issues that I recall.

Maybe the 21mm at 6K.

But overall - really good. Especially for us on our portrait work, where we live on a 35, 50, 60, 80, 100, 135 and 180.

Hi guys,

I have a nice collection of contax zeiss that i love to use, i got an offer for a SMC Pentax 15mm f3.5 for a decent price.
after reading a bit there are some rumours out there that it shares the design of the contax 15mm.
Anybody tried this lens? wondering if it would cut with my contax glass.

Thnx!

You should go for it! I know there are rumors Pentax lisenced the design of the 28 f2 Hollywood as well, so wouldn't surprise me if they did something similar with their version of the 15 3.5.

Keep me in mind Ive always assumed the exotic cost of the Contax 15mm had as much todo with their limited numbers/rarity.

Quick question.... Have any of you had your Mutar's converted to EF mounts on both sides?

I've contemplated this too.

RP Lens has suggested its too complicated...

Quick question for you Nick, if you don't mind. I've been looking at getting the 21mm 2.8.... I have a canon mount epic and canon mount raven on the way. I noticed there is a 21mm 2.8 mounted for canon ... http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Carl-Ze...320021?hash=item1ea1211a15:g:j6wAAOSwUuFW0~sq

vs something more along the lines in the survival guide...

Prahlad, the Contax 21mm and ZF/ZE and are almost identical.

The coatings of the Contax are a bit more lowcon, and mechanics bit more cine friendly (manual aperture and focuses correct way). The ZF is designed for Nikon, and focuses the wrong way. And the ZE is designed for Canon, and has no aperture ring.

I have canon dragons and a raven on the way, so just wondering when buying these Contax Zeiss lenses, if there is a more modern canon mount option, is that the same beautiful image you have discovered in the Contax line?

The Contax have older vintage coatings that I believe are far more forgiving on digital.

You mean its stuck at 70? Yeah - that may need a tech.

It worked nicely the night before, put in the case, next morning took it out of the case and it is stuck. Question marks above head.

Hello Contax users, it is almost one month I'm in the acores Portugal and I wanted to share some quick snap from the 18 F4 I use a lot.
Really like these lens :)

Edit: shot with Epic dragon body.

Brice, looking great. I've been wanted to pull the trigger on the 18 f4, but at f4 I'm worried it will take the backseat to my 18-35. Hmmmm.

Thank you guys !

@ Brandon I have a Tokina 11/16, guess what ?
I would not have taken this zoom for my Acorean trip instead of the 18 F4.
Sometime its not just about speed but also about character.
F4 is perfectly fine for landscape and outdoor work.
The 18mm is tiny and lightweight and its price is a no brainer.

Cheers
