  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

For clarity sake.

I'm understanding that 12 frame mode in Scarlet is a burst and not a continuous 12 frames per second.

Also, if Scarlet has the same Timelapse mode as EPIC then that makes it the least expensive motion timelapse camera red offers.

I see the lower framerates as important as the higher ones when it comes to epic I think as many people (maybe more) shoot timelapse over high speed.

So any clarity on 5k timelapse and whether 12 frames is a burst for stills or an actually motion stream would be appreciated.

I would say its continuous. On the Scarlet-X page, all resolutions(including 5K) and frame rates give aprox. the same result in the MB/s throughput.
As a formula output I consistently get >55MB/s -> it must be that compression ratios don't exactly map into the formula with the same number.

i.e. at 3K 48fps 7:1 3072x1620x16 /1024/1024/8 = ~9.5 MB/s raw /7 * 48 = ~65MB/s

I saw the word burst at some point but it seems to have been edited. If it can do one frame then Timelapse should not be a problem.

This is a kickass 5k time lapse camera equal to Epic.

SCARLET 5K is STILL mode... this would make it a 12fps Burst, meaning the need for pressing the start/record button each time an additional 12 frames are needed...

However since this is not a DSLR... It could be called Burst in STILL mode but be continuos 12fps for as long as you inserted SSD lasts...

I don't get what you mean.

Are you saying its a burst and a continuous stream. To me a stills more means you hit the button and it makes a 12 frame clip not that you hit the button and record for tyre hours at 12 frames per second. That sounds dangerous.

I really hope the Scarlet-X has timelapse functionality like the Epic. It seems like the hardware should be able to support this, but we will see. My gut tells me that as RED tinkers with the code we could see some nice extras added to Scarlet.

Dave,
Ketch is saying that Scarlet has a STILL continuous BURST at 5k but when you press the button it BURST a STILL of 12 fps.
Is it clear now?

Yes.

Scarlett 5k FF means this to me.

I hit record and a 12 frame clip is recorded.

Not

I hit record and the camera records at 12 frames per second.

So maybe there is no 5k time lapse mode at all.

Sorry David,

what I mean is that you can either choose to shoot continuously as you would on EPIC till the SSD runs out, but shooting at 12fps...

OR...

Click once and and again the start stop record button, to only record one burst of 12 in one second.

Scarlet 5K FF is 12fps continuous.

Nice! Thanks Deanan.

I'm also interested in Scarlet X's timelapse capabilities (some of it night time, even rigged on a german equatorial astronomy mount). Three quick questions:

What's the lowest frame rate at 5k?
What's the longest possible exposure? (looking for 30" + for astronomy)
Are these determined by the hardware's limits or could be eventually modified via firmware update?

Low frame rates can be set in the UI down to multiple seconds.
Long exposures is still being worked on and limits are TBD.
