  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

For those of you that can't quite comprehend the complexity of what we are trying to do... consider that there are 70 boards and 11,000 pieces on an EPIC-X (with modules).

Just food for thought while you are waiting...

Oh, man that is something... I have friend who do not want to know how complex is the car he is driving because he would loose his confidence in it... He believes that all complex things are prone to broke down or not to work at all...

With so many boards and pieces (prone to failing at one time or another), will RED offer a warranty longer than one year? Or will we be able to buy additional years of warranty?

Thanks Jim!

George

its built like tank I bet haha...

Tanks are built with precision though so agreed....just take all the time needed...

How about a photo of all said boards and components laid side by side on an endless row before they are fitted into those tiny modules? :-)

At the end of the day Jim, you are the one with the most to gain, and the most to loose, if your products are released not quite ready, so although very much appreciated, your explanations and requests for understanding are not required.

I think it's moving parts that are going to be far more prone to failure, so, I wouldn't be overwhelmed by the numbers that he mentioned in terms of the cameras stability... I think he's just making aware how complex a piece of equipment that they are building for us these cams truly are... In other words, they aren't sitting on their thumbs... They're building quite a piece of equipment in relatively short period of time. Something that doesn't really have a prior blueprint to go off of... At least that's my take on it :)

those boards must be pretty damn small ...

Hmmm, makes sense: about 11,000 requests for different features from Red users requires just as many pieces.

So, how many of them are we still waiting on? :sneaky2:

They are about to make that number a HECK of a lot smaller Red! :coolgleamA:

I'm not waiting...

I'm out shooting with a great, constantly improving 4.5K camera...

Take your time.

.

My feelings exactly (after replacing present action with plans to).

I wonder if a sensor upgrade will come before Epic-X. Though I guess a shock and awe at Epic-X release might be a better strategy. What does everyone else think? Sensor upgrade likely before Epic release or not?

I am thinking the same thing considering how small the basic body of the camera is.

Jim, how many new boards need to get added to the R1 if people decide to go the sensor replacement route? Do you end up pulling out a lot of the hardware that's currently in the camera or are there just a couple of critical components that need to change? This is mostly just out of curiosity, so don't feel compelled to go into detail if you don't want to.

Thanks!

he did say those numbers include the modules.

Not to mention:

  • Mechanical design
  • Thermal design
  • custom ASIC design
  • Sensor desgin/testing
  • Non-electrical assemblies/accessories
  • Communicaion protocols
  • Platform software code
  • UL/CE testing
  • integration testing
  • operating envelope testing
  • codec refinement
  • Features like auto-focus methodology, touch screen usage, hot-swap CF module, etc... design
  • Lens design
Meanwhile they've been pumping out things like RPP's, RED Rocket™, RocketCine, new color science, 4.5k shooting modes, etc...

Who knows what's going on with things like the Red Ranch, other service centers and the like.

Amazing progress for what (that I can tell) is a realatively small team, Jim.
