  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Combat RED

McDorf, I went to your website...good stuff. I'm curious, what was used to shoot the other Army footage on your demo movie? Looked pretty great, too. (Helicopter landing, running across field, etc.)

Thanks for sharing.

That footage is shot with a mix of HVX, HPX, and XL1 footage from MrGlory's first deployment.

Heh. You forgot to tell them about the DHL bill. I had no idea DHL even went there.

True, I was completely expecting a 3 digit shipping bill....it was that 4th digit that caught me by surprise.

McG,

Awesome.

Reminds me of my time gunning with .50 cals in CH-53's in the Marines. Although MOST of my time was spent on foot with a pack and a SAW.

Almost makes me want to re-up!

This was beautiful! It looks like a million bucks!

Pretty sweet for a guy in the middle of nowhere with a 5 finger zoom control :)

Workin' it ;)

I got a little bit of aerial footage that I'll try to work together shortly, with some great picks of bungee-cording the RED to the helo.

From the looks of that still, you oughta' be able to get a steadicam vest and arm on. Think gun camera, 120fps.

Moving footage. Excellent choices in the music used to accompany it! Simple, subtle, powerful.

Like the crazy steadicam style guns in ALIENS ;).

In a strange twist of fate, my deployment got cut short due outbound flying schedule and I'm on my way home now. I just happened to put the next (last--unfortunately and fortunately) link together to show the guys here real quick, so I thought I'd share. Same settings as the other two, tried to keep some of the saturation this time, but it's a short one, ran out of light pretty quick as usual.

Aerial Afghanistan - 13MB

I'm still waiting on a pic of the bungee solution, it worked ok considering I'd never have been able to shoulder the RED for that long ;).

Never had any big issues, just once I put a card in after booting up and it said it was too slow, pulled it out and put it back in--worked fine. The only annoying thing I ran into was when I'd try to change to varispeed on the fly and try to spin the wheel to get to a higher frame rate, if I was in a hurry and spinning the wheel it would actually cycle slower.

It surely impressed the hell out of everyone that saw it, if I wasn't leaving, I was invited to spend almost an entire day filming F15 operations after they saw the take-off shots. Someday I'd like to be able to spend some dedicated filming time over there (with a better tripod :) ), until that happens, there's always the possibility of the next deployment, this one was pretty eventful and I flew on many life saving missions.

Thanks again to everyone for the comments, if public affairs doesn't have any issues, I'll try to respond to requests for r3ds for folks who wanted to play around with grading.
