  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Combat RED

I've been telling myself that there's no way I'm going to do handheld with my 20-120; now I feel like the big wimp that I am and I'm getting motivated to get in better shape. It's good to see you using this lens - it has a nice character. I've got the Cartoni Focus as well for my HVX - maybe I need to tell it to buck up and get ready for the big leagues! Currently I use a Miller Arrow 55 and Sachtler Studio 7+7 II for my Red. The Focus kind of splits the difference between handheld and sticks - not bad at all.

Great stuff - the kind of stuff that needs to be captured at the highest resolution possible - history happening right now. Kudos to you and everyone involved. Love your editorial and music choices as well.

My family and I pray always for the safety and health of you and everyone in the field. We are all in your debt.

If you are ever in the Bay Area, CA and need anything, just let me know.

Best Regards,

Matthew Verkler

wow, the red camera looks more deadly than your gun!

Man that was poo pooing booooootiful! Verry well shot!

When you home are you going to be putting something together?

I've been home for a month now and finally had a chance to get an edit to where I wanted it. It mixes most of the footage from the previous clips with some footage I hadn't used yet and a bit of background, I only ended up with four chances to film while I was there so I didn't have all the footage I had planned on, but I tried to make do.

NexGen Combat Camera - 720p H.264 6Min. [Please excuse that my name/contact info is blocked out]

I edited this piece as a demo/presentation to show the capabilities of this new technology RED brings to the table with quality, scalability, and longevity back to combat zone footage unseen since WWII/Viet Nam film era (the 1080P is beautiful). It was straight off the proxies, we'll try a true conform with more attention to color later.

I will be using it as a tool to interest the DoD in assembling a specially trained team of service-members to film on this new equipment and provide footage to disseminate back to the public at a quality this generation deserves, both home and abroad.

If the bandwidth takes a dive, I've uploaded the clip to Vimeo as well: http://www.vimeo.com/1021632

Mr. Glory - Are you familiar with B. Sean Fairburn's work? http://www.seanfairburn.com/

He's another combat cameraman who has shot extensively for the Corp and is full of knowledge of the F900 (who I learned from). I have had the pleasure of working with him on a few occasions (in the civilian sector only).

I have thought of the RED in the future of combat photography - you show it can be done, but how close did you get to the front with it? In Bosnia, I wouldn't have wanted it due to the intense rain.

That was just awesome! For me, this is some of the most (if not the most) significant or meaningful RED footage out there.

Yes, communicated with him last week actually and he's interested.

Hopefully the leadership will agree .

Great footage and that music was incredible...really nice stuff.

Thanks for sharing-

wouldn't Scarlet be the perfect combat camera due to it's "run n gun" approach? Even if Red One seems good for this I believe Scarlet will be a more flexible and better choice. Especially in difficult areas.

...or, if my tests goes well, my first person mechanics might be good
(The thread in the cinematography forum)

Personally I'm hoping for some good antiwar footage in the same way that the vietnam images made people change minds about things. Done in the wrong way it can become a powerful warpromoter.
Warphotographers have alot of responsibility and the ones keeping themselves as objective and truthfully as possible have my deepest respect.

Just wanted to comment that that photo was picked to be the cover of this month's High Definition Magazine, which also has an article about my experiences with the RED in Afghanistan (there will also be an article in Government Video more angled towards my goal of getting a special team with dedicated filming time across Afghanistan, Iraq, and Horn of Africa equipped with the RED).
Also finally just got this photo emailed to me today (the previously mentioned last minute bungee cord solution):

Thanks to everyone for the support, I've just been called up to help out with the fires in CA (was actually trying to get authorized to go film before the call-up came!) might be a few weeks before I get a chance to check in again, can't wait to see what's changed when I do ;).

Thanks for the nice pic again Glory.
It's always cool to see your stuff and hear your storys from the frontline.
As a member of the swiss special forces I'm always with you and I have the biggest respect for what you all are doing over there.
