  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

We've been doing some testing of build 16 this weekend and have been enjoying the new features and better noise handling. Unfortunately we have also had several codec errors. These happened on different occasions and with different settings. We were shooting on 8 GB RED CF, RC28. We got some errors shooting 4K 16:9 at 25 fps, but also 3K 2:1 at 50 fps. The errors happened unexpectedly on some handheld shots and also quite systematically on contrasty shots of small waves crashing on the shore. We redid some similar shots of moving water in a less contrasty lighting and didn't have the problem.

Is there a way with build 16 to make sure these errors won't happen? Otherwise it seems like we will have to keep avoiding 16:9 for the moment, as we did with build 15.

This is really the first incarnation of 16x9 in any build so I suspect there will be growing pains. I know there are more pixels in 16x9 but I am going to stick with 2:1 for a while because I am am sure there will still be some bugs to work out of this BETA build.

Noise floor is awesome though :)

Real bummer to hear this. These codec errors have been claimed to be fixed in every build.

If you have a codec error can you make sure to contact our tech support team? We'd want to know your exact configuration and also ask you to e-mail them the .LOG file from the digital magazine please.

OO.. No not again

Email the .LOG files so we can all help RED help us... :)

Also, if you get a codec error, always de-focus the lens and try to shoot again - just so you can let Red know if you no longer get the error (when lens is de-focused).

I have been trying, but have not been able to get create a codec error in 16.

But 90% of the time we are in 23.98, so I'll hit it again in 25fps.

I had a codec error shooting 102 frames at Talladega with RC 28.

My theory was, RC 28 did not have enough "Threw put" to handle the motion of cars going 180-200 MPH at 102 frames I moved to RC 36 and all was well.

Just my 2 cents!

Mark, How's the building going? Any grand opening dates?

It's slow and steady as we are functioning in part of the space while we build. Right now, I'd have to say November we'll be 100%. And yeah, no matter how you calculate it, it's always MUCH more expensive and takes MUCH longer than you want it too.

I was not on set but crew reported some codec errors with Build 16 as well. Shooting on "ActionCam" steady cam at dawn around the Leman Lake.

I will ask the crew to give the most possible information and give the .log file.

Personnaly I've shot one whole day with Build 16 @4K 16/9 without any codec errors. Was studio, green screen and exterior shooting.

thanks,
antoine.

One additional thing to check - you MUST re-format any partially used media. i.e no mixing B15 and B16 footage on the same CF or RED-DRIVE

I was the 1st assist. on the shooting. In details:
  • 3K, 16/9, RC36 on a newly formated disk, 25fps/180° shutter.
  • Set on an "Action Cam" prototype "RED edition" with deported RED LCD
(standard cable) and battery (custom cable).
  • An HF FF receiver was attached under the special cheese plate and the servo was mounted upper left.
  • 30 minute before sunset, on a docked boat, ambiant temp around 20°C.
  • Zeiss S16 Super Speed 25mm @ 1.3, no filter, 320 ASA.
The codec error happen twice in the exact same point: the operator make a smooth 30° tilt up in order to get an black dressed actor who stood on crates with a dark blue sky background. Around 6 stop of contrast, exposure around -2, -2,5 stop on the actor.

If you want more detail, simply ask.

Like building a house!.. Hang in, keep your eye on the prize, it will be worth it in the end!

If possible please send our Tech Support team the .LOG files from those takes? This will help us diagnose what the situation is.

Thanks.
